Ferris State To Host "Red Out Wink & The Rink" This Saturday To Help Promote Heart Health

Ferris State University Athletics will be pairing up with the FSU Sports Careers Registered Student Organization (RSO) for the fourth annual "Red Out" event on Saturday, Feb. 24, inside the Ewigleben Sports Complex.

The month of February is Women's Heart Health month and the "Red Out Wink & The Rink" event is a way that FSU Athletics and Sports Careers RSO gives back to the community and those who have been affected by heart health in their life or someone in their families.

Nearly everyone you come in contact with has had someone in their family or a friend affected with a heart condition at some given point in time; therefore this event provides awareness to the spectators at the sporting events that this is an important issue that needs to be taken serious.

The event raises awareness and money for Women's Heart Health and Spectrum Health's Cardiac Unit in Big Rapids.

"I like to be part of an RSO that makes sure to give back to the local community for our philanthropy events and we are able to meet the people we are impacting with the funds raised," said senior Vice President of Sports Careers RSO Scott Vandersloot.

The event on Feb. 24 spans over the course of the entire day of Ferris State Athletic events. Ferris State men's basketball begins at 1 p.m., followed by women's basketball at 3 p.m., and concluding with men's ice hockey at 7:07 p.m. It will also be Senior Day for all three teams.

The first event will feature the nationally-third ranked Ferris State men's basketball team, which is currently 27-1 on the season and has already clinched the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Regular Season Championship, as they take on their archrivals in the Grand Valley State Lakers.

The FSU women's basketball team will be up next during the Red Out at 3 p.m. as they host Grand Valley State in a huge game for GLIAC Tournament seeding. The team is currently 13-13 overall on the season.

The event places an emphasis on if you are healthy enough to participate in sport. All over the world there are people that are unable to join a team or simply play a game they love, due to their heart condition.

"To me, Red Out represents an opportunity to try and make a difference in other people's lives," said senior President of Sports Careers RSO Sean Williams. "I enjoy it because it about something more than any one person and is an opportunity to come together as a community."

The final event of the night will be the Ferris State University hockey team facing off against the Lake Superior State Lakers at 7:07 p.m. This contest is a fight for the final spot in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Tournament.

All the teams for Ferris State will be wearing their home crimson red jerseys and all fans are asked to wear red for the games.

This year, the students of the Ferris State nursing program will be in attendance during the men's and women's basketball games. This gesture will be part of their good works and service hours to the community to take the blood pressure of spectators and fans in attendance for the game to see if their heart is healthy enough for sport.

Dr. Sandy Alspach, who is the adviser of the event, uses her Communication 389 & 489 classes to also pair up to help promote and work the operations of the events to ensure a day filled with excitement in the Big Rapids and Ferris State Athletics community.

Local businesses in the Mecosta County area help support Sports Careers RSO for this event by donating goods and services to be included in the silent auction at the event.

This year, some of the silent auction items include a signed basketball by the 27-1, nationally-third ranked Ferris State men's basketball team, a signed volleyball by the four-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Champion Ferris State women's volleyball team, a signed football from the 2017 National Quarterfinalist Ferris State football team, and many more.

Ferris State will also be raffling off a television donated by Northland Flats Apartments.

The event is one of the RSO's three philanthropy events this semester. The other two events include the Area 5 Special Olympics Basketball game and the Area 5 Special Olympians Poly Hockey game coming up later this year.

The "Red Out" event will get underway Saturday as the men's basketball team takes on archrival Grand Valley State at 1 p.m. inside Jim Wink Arena.

Come out and be apart of an event that will change lives. Fans are asked to wear red.
