Big Rapids Spectrum Health Hospital releases top baby names in 2017

 

What were the top baby names for 2017? Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital released its list based on the 586 babies delivered at the hospital.

 

Topping this list this year for girls is Zoey, with Jackson taking the No. 1 spot for the boys for the second year in a row.

 

Number two and three on the girl's list were Abigail and Anna or Annabelle.

 

The two and three spots for boy's names were Emmett and Aiden. 

Weidman driver hit flat bed of semi truck in Isabella Co.

 

A 46-year old Weidman man is recovering after hitting a flat bed of a semi truck with his car in Isabella County.

 

Police say Kristopher Antcliff was traveling north on Littlefield Road and failed to stop at a stop sign at Weidman road and into a flatbed trailer that was parked in the driveway of a business.

 

Antciff's vehicle went under the flatbed trailer.

 

The driver of the semi was not injured in the accident.

 

Deputies say alcohol was a factor in the accident.

 

The condition of Antcliff's is not known at this time. 

 

Grand Rapids man injured in snowmobile accident

 

A 28-year-old Grand Rapids man is recovering injuries following a weekend snowmobile crash.

 

Mecosta County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to White Pine Trail near Stanwood on Saturday.

 

Darius Johnson was found injured after he drove off the trail, struck a tree and was ejected from the snowmobile.

 

Johnson was transported to the Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital for treatment.

 

Police said he received non life threatening injuries.

 

Johnson was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

New case of chronic wasting disease confirmed in Mecosta County

 

Another case of chronic wasting disease has been reported in a Michigan deer, this time in Mecosta County.

 

The confirmation comes from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development regarding a one-and-a-half-year-old female deer on a farm in the county.

 

In the last two-and-half years, around 23,000 deer have been tested for CWD, resulting in 30 cases confirmed or suspected.

Planet Fitness announces Big Rapids location

 

New jobs are coming to Big Rapids.

 

The remaining portion of the former Kmart building located at 1250 Perry Ave. in Big Rapids will be occupied by Planet Fitness, Colliers International | West Michigan announced today.

 

Planet Fitness plans to open May 2018 and will occupy 16,000 square feet next to Family Farm and Home.

Morley woman sent to hospital following head on car accident

A head on crash in Mecosta County Sunday afternoon.

 

The Sheriff's Department says a pickup truck driver lost control of his vehicle while crossing a bridge and crossed the center line and hit another pickup driven by a 50-year-old woman from Morley headon.

 

Both drivers complained of injuries and the woman driver was taken to Spectrum Butterworth.

Sleepy driver rolls vehicle during accident Sunday in Mecosta Co.

 

A drowsy driver is the cause of a vehicle to roll several times over the weekend in Mecosta County.

 

It happened on Newcosta Avenue north of Baseline Road in Mecosta Township.

 

The driver, 24-year old Christoper Timmer of Newaygo, told police he fell asleep and went off the road, causing his vehicle to overturn.

 

Timmer received non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital for treatment. 

Police investigating Friday school bus accident

The Mecosta County Sheriff's office is investigating a bus accident that occurred Friday.

 

The accident involving a Chippewa Hills School District bus happened on 10th ave north of Hoover Rd in Fork Twp.

 

The bus driver was just north of a bus stop when students were being disorderly on the bus. The driver stopped the bus to address the disorderly kids. The driver didn't properly engage the braking mechanism before going to the back of the bus to address the disorderly students. The bus rolled forward running off the road and hitting a barbwire fence then coming to a stop in a field.

 

Two students received treated for non life threatening injuries.

 

The accident is still under investigation.
