AG Schuette wants more police in Michigan

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette wants Governor Rick Snyder to spend $140-million-dollars to hire more police. The money would come from the state's budget surplus and put 1,000 more officers on patrol statewide. Schuette is also calling for 25-year mandatory sentences for four-time felony offenders and stiffer penalties for pubic officials convicted of crimes. Surrounded by two shopping carts full of groceries, State Attorney General Bill Schuette, Michigan First Lady Sue Snyder, and other partners, kicked off the 21st annual "Michigan Harvest Gathering" on the steps of the state capitol Wednesday. Schuette, a Co-Founder of the annual food drive, says state residents and employees have met and exceeded annual goals, to feed more than a million of the state's hungry each year, even in tough times.

Admissions ban appeal

A Federal Appeals Court that overturned Michigan’s ban on using race and gender as a factor in admission to public colleges and universities, will revisit its decision. A three-judge panel of the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals on July 1st struck down the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, which also prohibits using race and gender in government hiring and contracting.

AG Schuette wants changes made to Medical Marijuana Act

Attorney General Bill Schuette wants changes made to what he calls the poorly written Michigan medical marijuana act. Schuette says the law has been hijacked by pot profiteers who threaten public safety on the roads and in communities. Highlights of Schuette's proposal include making it a felony for physicians to knowingly falsely certify a debilitating medical condition for patients seeking to use medical marijuana or knowingly submit false information on an application for a patient or caregiver card.

AG Schuette to join effort to close Midland Co. marijuana dispensary

Attorney General Bill Schuette has announced a Midland Judge has granted his request to join an effort by Midland County Prosecutor Michael Carpenter to close the Twinn Bridges Compassion Club Marijuana Dispensary in Midland. Prosecutor Carpenter filed an ex parte petition to have the dispensary declared a public nuisance and closed on the grounds that Midland County Circuit Court Judge Jonathan E. Lauderbach recently declared the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act unconstitutional and because the act does not authorize dispensaries.

Asian Carp public hearing in Traverse City

Asian Carp public hearing in Traverse City The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold a public hearing in Traverse City this afternoon to get input on efforts to keep the Asian Carp and other invasive species out of the Great Lakes. The corps has completed a preliminary risk assessment to identify potential transfer points of invasive species between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins.
