Police statewide gather at Ferris State for Police Memorial

The 9th Annual Police Memorial Ceremony was held at Ferris State University yesterday to pay respect and tribute to both fallen and serving officers. Pastor John Fleming, the Police Chaplain, spoke before the Moment of Solemnity, "While we honor those fallen officers, we also take this moment to celebrate and honor the dedication of all of you who serve and protect us each and every day of your lives.

Ferris State Student Government elects new president for 2012-13

Ferris State University's Student Government organization has elected Byron Williams of Pontiac as their new president for the 2012-13 school year. Williams, a junior majoring in public relations, has been a member of student government since Fall 2009. Williams says, “I felt like it was my time to step up, and I felt like I was the most experienced since I've been a Student Government member for two-and-a-half years.” Williams started out as a general assembly member, and later stepped in as a director of public relations for the 2011-12 school year.

Yates Named Dean of Ferris State University's College of Engineering Technology

J.K. Yates was named dean of Ferris State University’s College of Engineering Technology in an announcement made to the university community by Fritz Erickson, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs on Friday, April 20. The appointment of Yates is effective July 1. “Dr. Yates’ passion for providing students with quality education and hands-on learning opportunities has remained prevalent throughout her impressive professional career,” Erickson said.

Big Rapids City Commission praise FSU students who participated in "Big Event"

Ferris State University's Big Event had another successful year. On Saturday, almost 1500 volunteers pitched in to help out with yard and home maintenance on 226 houses in the community. Mayor Warba had a few words to say about the event at the city commission meeting yesterday evening. "They did an excellent job, and as I went around town I saw the same thing. A lot of work was being done and with it you can see the results of that hard work.

David Eisler to remain as President at Ferris State

Ferris State University President David Eisler has withdrawn his name from consideration for the position of president at Northern Kentucky University, where he was one of three finalists for the position. Over the weekend he released the following statement on Ferris' website which says quote "At this point I do not know if a decision has been made on the position at Northern Kentucky University", "but I want to share with you that we have made our decision and chosen to remain at Ferris State University". President Eisler is entering his 10th year of leading Ferris State University.

Ferris State students ready to 'take back the night"

Take Back the Night is an event hosted at Ferris State University on that is designed to bring awareness to violence against women. Interim Director of Student Leadership and Activities Allissa Witucki talks about the goals of the event, "To help heal idividuals, community members, and families who have been effected by it, as well as empower those who have been victimized.

Congressman Dave Camp visits Ferris discusses issues

US Representative Dave Camp visited Ferris State University yesterday as part of the University's Politcal Engagement Project. During the discussion with Camp, Ferris's President David Eisler stated that the biggest issue for the university is student debt. Eisler asks, "We're at a point now where 50% of our students receive pell grants. I wondered if you could give a feeling about where the support for pell grants is going to go?" Camp Responds, "Student loan debt caps has gone up, and as pell grant caps have gone up, tuition has also have gone up.

Ferris State University honors former graduate killed in the line of duty with scholarship

Ferris State University has created a new scholarship to honor a former graduate killed in the line of duty. The Ryan McCandless Memorial Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to one or more full-time sophomore, junior or senior students enrolled in the Criminal Justice program at Ferris State and maintaining a 3.0 GPA. The 28-year old McCandless of Midland, graduated from Ferris in 2005. He was killed in the line of duty on August 2nd while working for the Rapid City Police Department in South Dakota.

Ferris State President David Eisler is a finalist to become next president of Northern Kentucky University

Ferris State University President David Eisler is one of three finalists looking to become the next president of Northern Kentucky University, according to Cincinnati.com. The website says Eisler will tour the university on April 2-3 “to meet students, faculty, staff, alumni and community leaders.” The university, located seven miles southeast of Cincinnati, had an estimated enrollment of 15,749 in fall 2010, according to federal data. "While details of a contract will have to be negotiated, NKU anticipates a new president would make a first-year salary of $315,000.

Ferris State students to participate in Big Event

The Big Event is an effort that Ferris State students, faculty and staff will unite in to say thank you to our community. On April 14th, the Big Event volunteers will perform small service projects such as yard work, washing windows, and painting for the residents of the community at no cost. Last year 1500 people volunteered, lending a helping hand for 215 homes. Students can still sign up to volunteer through Ferris's org-sync account online, and homeowners may apply over the phone at (231) 591-2611 or online at studentgov.ferris.edu.
