Soaring gas prices are explained

It's no secret that gas prices have been on a steady increase in the Mecosta County area lately. Gasbuddy.com's Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan explains this increase. "A lot of it has to do with the switch-over to summer gasoline. It's a progressive switch-over that we've already started. Supply is generally very tight as the summer driving season starts because refineries are forced to start producing this type of gas.

Stabenow wants to end tax subsidies for big oil companies

Michigan's Junior U.S Senator Debbie Stabenow says billions of dollars of tax breaks to big oil companies should end. Stabenow yesterday (Monday) voted to allow debate on a bill to eliminate about $20-billion-dollars in tax subsidies to the world's five largest oil companies... Stabenow says it's an insult to pay whatever price the oil companies want at the pump out of one pocket and then deliver subsidies out of the other pocket. The 'Repeal Big Oil Tax Subsidies Act' also would have renewed tax incentives for the development of clean energy technologies, which Stabenow says would create jobs

Michigan voters unhappy with the idea of raising gas taxes and registration fees

A new poll shows that roughly 60-percent of Michigan voters oppose the idea of raising gas taxes and registration fees. According to the survey conducted by Epic MRA of Lansing, 58-percent of voters opposed the increases, while 36-percent were in favor of it. Officials say the money generated from the increases would go to fund road and bridge improvements. The poll was conducted January 21st through the 25th with a margin of error of plus or minus four-percentage points. (MRN)

Michigan gas tax and auto registration fees to increase

More than a dozen bills have been introduced in the State Legislature that would raise over one billion dollars annually to maintain Michigan’s roads and bridges. The bills include repealing the 19-cent gas tax motorists pay at the pump, and shift to a 28.3-cent tax on the wholesale price of fuel raising $541 million. However, only the new revenue would be dedicated to Michigan’s roads and bridges. Another $500 million would come from raising annual vehicle registration fees an average of $60. (MRN)

Feds to announce new fuel standards

The Federal Government will announce new fuel economy rules today that require cars and light trucks to get 54.5 miles a gallon by 2025.  The "Detroit Free Press" reports the Department Of Transportation and Environmental Protection Agency will make the announcement, which is in line with numbers announced by President Obama this summer as his target.  California Republican Congressman Darrell Issa, who chairs the House Oversight Committee, is a skeptic of the goal because he's not sure enough public input was sought and is also unsure if the mileage targets can even be achieved.(MRN) Image

Michigan sending a lot of money to other countries and states for gas

Michiganders sent $14.8 billion dollars to other countries and states to import gasoline in 2009. That's according to an analysis by the Ecology Center. The Ann Arbor-based environmental organization says with gasoline prices soaring over the last year, floating around $4 per gallon, Michigan drivers likely are sending even more of their money out of state to import petroleum now. Climate And Energy Policy Director Charles Griffith says because not much oil is produced in Michigan, nearly every dollar spent on gasoline in Michigan leaves the state.

Keep your utility meters clean and clear

Consumers Energy is once again reminding its gas and electric customers to keep their meters clear of snow and ice buildup to ensure proper operation and the safety of meter readers. The Jackson-based utility says whenever possible, sidewalks, stairways and gate areas should also be kept free of ice and snow. For indoor meters, the path leading to the meter should be kept clutter-free and well lighted to help spot potential hazards.

Gas prices down

Michigan motorists have a little more incentive to go traveling this Memorial Day weekend. Gas prices are down nearly 11.5 cents statewide to an average of $2.72. The auto club said Monday the statewide average is 20 cents per gallon higher than last year at this time. In Big Rapids, drivers are getting a little less relief with prices seven cents higher at $2.79.

Your fault

A Michigan State University researcher is part of a national research council panel that has concluded climate change is caused by human activities and action must be taken soon to reduce the global threat. The study was released Wednesday. MSU assistant vice president for environmental research Tom Dietz says the largest single contributor to the changes in climate over the last 100 years is the release of greenhouse gasses. The report calls for the development of a single federal program or entity whose charge is to coordinate efforts to reduce the effects of climate change.

Gas prices up

Gas prices are continuing their upward creep, and in some cases prices have topped $3 a gallon. According to AAA Michigan, the statewide average is sitting below the $3 mark, at $2.97 for a gallon of self-serve regular. In the Big Rapids area, however, prices are right at, or just above, the $3 mark. That’s up about 4.5 cents from last week and about 76 cents from this time last year.
