Remus woman injured in vehicle rollover over weekend

Mecosta County Sheriffs Deputies are still trying to figure out what caused a single vehicle accident over the weekend. Police say 25 year old Beverly Rabbitt of Remus rolled her vehicle over at 6 mile and 20th ave Saturday. Rabbitt was taken To Mecosta County Medical Center and then airlifted by aero-med to Spectrum Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Pucell appoints Jim Taylor as new Undersheriff

New Mecosta County Sheriff Todd Purcell has chosen a new under sheriff and right from his own back yard. Sergeant Jim Taylor from the Big Rapids Department of Public Safety will officially take the position on October 17th. Taylor is a lifelong resident of Big Rapids and DPS Director Frank West says its going to make for a great working relationship with the Sheriff’s office. Sheriff John Sontaag is retiring October 15th after 30 years on the job. A special committee appointed current Under Sheriff Purcell to fill the remaining two years of his term.

2 arrests made in Barryton EL. break in

The Mecosta County Sheriffs Department made the arrest of two juveniles early this morning in connection with the vandalism at Barryton Elementary on Saturday. Deputies say they were on routine patrol in Barryton when they found a juvenile boy walking. Deputies found evidence that connected the boy with the elementary school break-in. Further investigation led them to the girl and police say both confessed.

Mecosta Co. purse snatcher

Mecosta County sheriff’s deputies arrested a purse snatcher over the weekend. Police say they were dispatched to Wal-Mart in Big Rapids for a larceny complaint. An investigation found that a female had dropped her purse in the parking lot and a 44 y/o male from white cloud picked it up. The suspect proceeded to dump the wallet in the trash inside the store and steal cash that was inside the purse. When confronted the suspect initially denied stealing the money, but under further investigation the suspect admitted that he had stolen the money.

Big Rapids man arrested for assault

The Mecosta County sheriff’s deputies arrested a 57 year old big rapids man Wednesday after he threatened a 21 year old Evart man with a handgun. Police say after the 21 year old was threatened he immediately called authorities who gave a description of the suspect and vehicle involved, minutes later sheriffs deputies apprehended the suspect. Police say he was arrested for felonious assault, operating while intoxicated, and several other alcohol and firearm violations.

The Mecosta County Sheriffs Department is investigating a Forth of July breaking and entering at a residence in Mecosta Township. Deputies say suspects took a large screen television and a large amount of rifles and other items from the home on northland. The Mecosta County Sheriffs Department has two juvenile suspects in custody following a breaking and entering that occurred Tuesday evening at Bradley’s Hardware in Mecosta. During the course of the investigation, deputies determined that subjects forced entry into the store the previous evening, stealing and damaging several items. The incident remains under investigation.

Man in critical condition after car accident

Man in critical condition after car accident A 21 year old man is in the hospital after he lost control of his vehicle and hit a few trees. The Mecosta County Sheriffs Department says they were dispatched to 185th Ave. And 11 mile road for a 1 vehicle accident a determined the driver Dustin Peterson lost control and went through the intersecting and approx. 200 feet into the wood striking several trees. Excessive speed was believed to be the factor in the accident. Peterson is in critical condition and was airlifted to Butterworth hospital in Grand Rapids.
