Michigan gas tax and auto registration fees to increase

More than a dozen bills have been introduced in the State Legislature that would raise over one billion dollars annually to maintain Michigan’s roads and bridges. The bills include repealing the 19-cent gas tax motorists pay at the pump, and shift to a 28.3-cent tax on the wholesale price of fuel raising $541 million. However, only the new revenue would be dedicated to Michigan’s roads and bridges. Another $500 million would come from raising annual vehicle registration fees an average of $60. (MRN)

Saline republican says Michigan roads need repair now

A state lawmaker who co-authored a recent bipartisan report on Michigan roads, says Michigan’s roadways are in such rough shape that finding at least $1.4-billion dollars more per year is the only fiscally responsible way to deal with the problem. Rick Olson, a Saline republican, says it (quote) "Pains" him to say it, but more money is needed to fix the transportation system. And Michigan not only needs the extra revenue, it's all needed immediately, according to Olson, who adds that simply phasing it in by $200-million dollar increments (quote) "Would result in further deterioration of roads.
