Public safety in Cadillac gets failing grade

The city of Cadillac is being rated as one of the least safe cities in Michigan. A study conducted by the website ValuePenguin compared a variety of crime metrics of 168 cities across the state. The study placed Cadillac as 149th on the list. Big Rapids placed 104th. Detroit was considered the least safe while Raisin Township in Lenawee County was deemed the safest city in Michigan.

Family escapes fire, home total loss

A man's dream home is a total loss following a fire in Wexford County. Officials say firefighters spent more than an hour fighting the blaze at Jeff Okros's home in Colfax Township. Okros says he attempted to extinguish the growing flames with buckets of water before grabbing a handful of clothing and escaping the fire with his wife and two dogs. The fire is believed to have started in the family’s wood-burning stove.

Fatal accident on U.S. 131

Two people are dead following a head-on collision in Wexford County. The Wexford County Sheriff's Department says 20-year-old Calorena Elowsky and 20-year-old Maura Brandi, both of Charlevoix, were northbound on U.S. 131 at the Manistee River, lost control, crossed the centerline and hit a southbound vehicle head-on. The driver and a passenger of the southbound vehicle were taken to the hospital.

Woman in critical condition

A 24-year-old Copemish woman is in critical condition after a piece of wood flew through her windshield. Police say the woman was likely traveling behind a maroon colored pickup truck on M-115 in Wexford County when a piece of firewood came off the back of the pickup and smashed through her windshield. A witness reported seeing the pickup truck with an extended cab and blue tarp covering the bed. Anyone with information about the accident of the pickup truck is asked to contact the Michigan State Police.

Cadillac teen arrested

A Cadillac teen is under arrest being charged in connection with the thefts of two cars from a local dealership. 17-year-old Kristian Rusch was arraigned on two counts of unlawful driving away of a motor vehicle. Both vehicles were found in northern Wexford County a few days after the thefts. Rusch is also being charged with arson in the burning of one of the vehicles, breaking and entering at Northpointe Motors on Boon Road and breaking and entering with intent at Cadillac Truck Service on South 39 Road.

Woman gives children pot

A northern Michigan woman is being charged with child abuse after police say she gave her young sons marijuana for medical reasons. 31-year-old Amy Cunningham of Mesick allegedly gave pot to her 10-year-old to help with emotional issues and to her 12-year-old to treat ADHD. Cunningham said she preferred giving her children pot over prescription pills. She was arraigned in Wexford County on two counts of third degree child abuse and delivering and making marijuana.

24-year old woman killed in car accident in Wexford Co.

Police believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in a fatal accident in Wexford County over the weekend. State Police say it happened early Saturday morning on M-115 in Clam Lake Township where a car traveling on M-115 was attempting to pass a motorist when the driver of the car lost control then skidded into a semi tractor trailer. The crash sheared off the rear portion of the car, ejecting a 24-year-old female passenger from the vehicle. The female passenger, a resident of Caledonia, was reported to be asleep in the back seat and died at the scene.

Son & daughter save father from near drowning in Wexford Co.

A Cadillac man is in fair condition after nearly drowning on Lake Mitchell in Wexford County last night. State Police say 46-year old Michael Fewless went out for a swim around 6-pm last night when he had a hard time keeping his head above water, that's when he called for help. Police say his 22-year old daughter and 12-year old son came to his rescue and pulled their father into a boat they had and drove him to shore.

Cadillac man takes Police on 22 mile chase through two counties

A Cadillac man is behind bars awaiting arraignment after he took police on a high speed chase in Wexofrd Co. that lasted 22 miles and topped speeds of 120 miles per hour. State Police say it started after an officer tried to stop a motorcycle on northbound U.S. 131 for traveling 90 mph in a 70 mph zone.

58-year old man suffers serious injuries after motorcycle accident in Wexford Co.

A 58-year old man up in Wexford County suffered serious injuries after a motorcycle accident last night. State Police say the Farwell man was traveling eastbound on M-115 in Springville Township when he struck a curb of a roundabout causing him to lose control and fall off the bike. He's currently listed in critical condition. Police believe alcohol was a factor in the accident.
