State lawmakers reach tentative budget deal

A tentative agreement has been reached on the states 2011 fiscal year budget, averting a potential governmental shutdown. According to the Detroit News, The deal, hammered out today between Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop, R-Rochester, House Speaker Andy Dillon, D-Redford Township, and State Budget Director Bob Emerson, would include a 3% cut in the budgets for all state departments, as proposed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm. Granholm spokeswoman Tiffany Brown confirmed an agreement had been reached. "We expect the agreement to be signed tomorrow and the governor will have a statement at that time," Brown said late today. Details must be worked out in committees, approved by Republican and Democratic caucuses and then by the full House and Senate.
