Oneta Elgene Donders, passed away peacefully at her home, near Barryton, on Sunday, July 31, 2016, at the age of 90. She was born at home on Eight Point Lake, Isabella County, to Jack and Josephine (Cook) Scott on June 29, 1926. Oneta attended the one room school house in Lake Station before attending Barryton Rural Agricultural School. After marrying Robert B. “Toad” Donders, they made their home near Barryton where they have resided since.
Oneta was very talented and resourceful, with numerous interests: an avid reader, rock hound, and collector. She was an original subscriber to prevention magazine, organic gardening and supporter of herbal and alternative medicine, and one of the very early recycle/reuse advocates. Oneta was a true outdoorsman with a deep love of nature and all it provided. Oneta and Toad taught their children how to live off of the land by hunting, trapping, fishing, gardening and canning. Her actions and way of life taught all how to appreciate and respect what nature provides.
She is survived by her fishing partner and husband Robert; sons, Duane of Sun City, AZ and Dennis of Remus, MI; daughters, Marcia (Arthur) Machado of Crockett, CA and Christina (Randy) Reisig of Saginaw, MI; two step-daughters, Kayla (Lyman) Richter and Shirley “Cookie” (Larry) Squires; a daughter-in-law Linda Donders; seventeen grandchildren, many many great and great-great grandchildren and many extended family and friends who will not forget knowing her nor the things they learned from this remarkable woman.
Oneta was preceded in death by her son Leonard, three sisters and two brothers.
