Bernard Smith, a beloved father, accomplished handyman, and cherished storyteller, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on October 20, 1932, Bernard filled the lives of those around him with laughter, wisdom, and an unwavering spirit of generosity.
As a jack of all trades, Bernard was always willing to lend a hand to family, friends, and neighbors alike. His expertise in woodworking showcased his creativity and his passion for crafting beautiful, functional pieces that left a lasting impact. A true family man, he took immense pride in his daughters, Rhonda Neitzel and Tamara Smith, nurturing them with love and imparting invaluable advice that they carried with them.
Known for his quick wit and sharp sense of humor, Bernard had a unique ability to lighten any room with his jokes and captivating tales. He understood the power of storytelling, sharing experiences that not only entertained but also taught important life lessons. Those who had the privilege of knowing him will forever cherish the warmth of his smile and the comfort of his words.
Bernard's legacy lives on in the hearts of all who encountered his kindness and compassion. His willingness to help others will be fondly remembered as a testament to his character, which inspired those around him to show empathy and generosity.
Bernard is survived by his Daughter, Rhonda (Rick) Neitzel, his brother Clair Smith, and his grandchildren Kylle (Jillian) Smith, and Skyler Neitzel.
A memorial service to celebrate Bernard's remarkable life will be held on August 29th, at Janowicz Family Funeral Home in Lakeview. Reception at 10:00am and service at 11:00am. There will be a Celebration of Life at the Lakeview VFW Post directly following the service. Friends and family are invited to come together to share memories, laughter, and stories as we honor the man who touched our lives in so many meaningful ways. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made payable to Community Hospice, send to 181 W River Valley, Newaygo, MI 49337.Donations go into a fund that is used to cover costs not covered by insurance to local patients.
Bernard is preceded in death by his wife Shirley, his daughter Tamara, and his brothers Duane and Donald.
