An argument about overdue rent between a man and woman escalated from text messages to a gunshot fired in a backyard east of Mt. Pleasant on Tuesday.

Isabella County Sheriff Michael Main says when deputies arrived they determined that a neighbor had fired off a shot gun in the back yard of a woman's  residence and no one was struck. As the investigation continued deputies learned that the 36-year old man who fired the shot gun was the landlord to the caller.

After several text messages, the man allegedly came into the back yard of the rental property and fired off a round from a shotgun.

The man then returned home.

When police arrived to his residence he refused to have any contact with law enforcement. Eventually deputies and a Michigan State Trooper were able to make contact and take him into custody.

Two shot guns were seized from his residence.

The man was arrested on weapons charges and felon in possession of a firearm
