State Senate approves bills allowing college athletes to get paid for likeness

The Michigan Senate is giving final approval to bills that would let college athletes get paid for the use of their names, images or likeness rights.

If signed into law, Michigan would be at least the fourth state to allow college athletes to be paid for endorsements, and Governor Gretchen Whitmer is expected to sign the bills.

The legislation would ban in-state schools, the NCAA and the athletic conference from blocking compensation.

A second measure would no longer make it a crime for agents to enter into contracts with student-athletes while the NCAA comes up with new rules to let athletes become paid sponsors.
