Fatal Lake County hit-and-run accident believed to be accidental

On Sunday, Feb. 11, at approximately 3:24 P.M., the Lake County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a hit-and-run accident involving a pedestrian.

Dispatch advised that a pedestrian jumped in front of a single-cab truck pulling a trailer and was then lying in the road on Michigan Ave. at the intersection of Sixth St. In a recent social media update on Tuesday, Feb. 13, the Sheriff's Office clarified that the accident was not intentional, but accidental.

Deputies arrived at the scene to see a male lying in the roadway. Life-saving efforts were attempted; however, the victim was pronounced dead. The victim was a 58-year-old man from Baldwin.

Evidence from the preliminary investigation supported the incident being accidental. A 27-year-old man from White Cloud was charged with driving on a suspended license and causing death.

The crash is still under investigation at this time. Anyone with information should contact Deputy Buscaino or Det./Lt. Nixon at (231)-745-2712.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Lake County 911 Central Dispatch, Michigan State Police, Pleasant Plains Fire Department, Mid-Michigan Medical Examiner's Office, Verdun Funeral Home, Life EMS, Lake County Emergency Management, Lake Township Fire, and Lake County Road Commission.
