According to the City of Big Rapids, a multi-state developer is interested in constructing a multi-story apartment complex to help with income-based housing in Big Rapids.
The complex would be located at 1201 Woodward Ave, using a five-acre parcel of land between Woodward and Fuller Ave. Those five acres would require a re-zoning from R-1 to R-3 for development of the project.
Wallick Communities and Spruce Ridge Development are the companies partnering on the project.
“Currently they are proposing two three-story apartment buildings,” Community Development Director Michelle Stenger said. “This request could change as it moves through the site plan review process.”
According to Stenger, the apartments would be targeting income-based family housing with two and three-bedroom apartments.
A public hearing to discuss the project was recently postponed on Feb. 19 and will be made up at the April Planning Meeting.
“(City of Big Rapids) staff believes there is a need for all types of housing in Big Rapids,” Stenger said.
Hillcrest and Apple Ridge Apartments, nearby complexes to the project’s proposed location, are located on the west side of Fuller Ave.
