Tree clearing near the wetlands surrounding Roben-Hood Airport will soon be underway as part of the long-planned runway extension project. This initial work marks the beginning of a critical infrastructure improvement aimed at enhancing airport safety, accommodating larger aircraft, and supporting future aviation growth.

This project is entirely separate from the proposed Gotion development and has been in the works for the last 15 years. The runway extension is being funded through City funds, federal and state aviation grants and follows strict environmental guidelines to minimize impact on the surrounding wetlands.

"When I was at the MAAE Conference in Lansing last week, an MDOT official told me this runway extension project is the biggest general aviation project in the state of Michigan," said Roben-Hood Airport Director Kendra Herrema. "This extension will allow the airport to better serve the community and improve operational efficiency while maintaining a strong commitment to environmental stewardship."

The clearing process is being conducted with oversight from environmental agencies to ensure compliance with wetland conservation regulations. Following this phase, additional site preparation and infrastructure improvements will continue throughout the year, with full construction on the runway extension expected to begin later in 2025.

Residents can expect to see increased activity near the airport in the coming weeks as the project progresses. The City of Big Rapids and airport officials will provide regular updates to keep the community informed.
