A mixed bag of weather is forecast for Thursday, April 2, in the greater Big Rapids area.
Rain showers will be possible all day Thursday, beginning around 4 a.m. in Newaygo County. The system will move northeast as a large complex of rain with steady wind gusts around 20-30 mph. Early temperatures during this initial rainfall will be in the high 20s to low 30s, raising the possibility of snowfall and freezing rain. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Clare and Osceola counties from 2 a.m. to noon Thursday.
“Freezing rain will remain possible through mid morning on Thursday across the same locations of interior Central Lower Michigan,” NWS Grand Rapids said in its most recent Hazardous Weather Outlook. “Any icing will be light, a tenth of an inch or less.”
General rainfall will continue throughout the day at various intensities until around 8 p.m. Thunderstorms will be possible with a line of cells following behind the main complex into the night. Rising temperatures and destabilization throughout the day could create multiple severe storms into the overnight hours. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight risk (level 2 of 5) of severe weather for counties south of Kingsley and the M-186/M-113 corridor, and counties west of Bay City along the M-23 corridor. Chances for damaging winds (15%), hail (5%) and tornadoes (up to 5%) will be possible through early Friday morning.
“Severe weather is possible Thursday afternoon and night as a low pressure system moves through the Great Lakes region," NWS Grand Rapids said. "Another system on Saturday could bring another round of severe weather. Heavy rain and localized short-term flooding will be possible with both the Thursday and Saturday systems."
More details on Saturday’s storm chances will come later in the week. For up-to-date forecasts, visit https://bigrapidsdailynews.com/forecast.
