City commissioners will meet Monday, April 6, to discuss multiple significant proposals in Big Rapids.
The meeting’s study session will focus on a recent development proposal at the former Hanchett property. DeShano Development Corp., based in Gladwin, has proposed a two-phase project that would include about 64 apartment units for senior living. The development would feature a gazebo, pickleball court, salon, theater room and several covered parking spaces. Construction on the first phase is expected to begin sometime in 2027-28.
Also on the agenda is a resolution accepting a proposal from Fleis & VandenBrink for construction engineering services on the Woodward Avenue culvert replacement project at the 1200 block of Woodward Avenue. The overall project is estimated at about $500,900 and includes 0.16 mile of new asphalt paving, culvert replacement, guardrail and permanent pavement markings. The contractor is John Henry Excavating. Work is slated to begin April 13.
Other business items include:
- Accepting the Park and Recreation Board’s recommendation to name the new pavilion in Northend Riverside Park “Pavilion III” and to adopt the rental fee structure.
- Awarding a bid for the Safe Walkways project.
- Approving an interlocal agreement for snowplowing services on the Big Rapids Charter Township sidewalk along State Street.
