Phillip Lee Sprague, 62, of Farwell, was bound over to stand trial in the 55th Circuit Court in Clare County this past week.

He faces one count of Embezzlement from a Vulnerable Adult - $100,000 or More, a 20-year felony, and two counts of Embezzlement from a Vulnerable Adult - $50,000 or More but Less Than $100,000, each a 15-year felony. It was announced on Thursday, Sep. 10, 2026, by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

It is alleged that Sprague, who was charged in February, embezzled from an 82-year-old victim who had sustained a traumatic brain injury. Sprague allegedly obtained more than $400,000 of assets from the victim. Of that, more than $300,000 was reportedly obtained through changes the victim made to his Will and Trust to benefit the defendant instead of the victim’s children and grandchildren.

“I am pleased this case has now moved forward to trial, where we will continue to seek justice for the victim and his family,” said Attorney General Nessel. “Vulnerable Michiganders should never have to worry about protecting their life savings from those meant to care for them, and my office will continue to work tirelessly to hold accountable individuals who exploit their positions of trust.”

Sprague is scheduled to appear before the 55th Circuit Court on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026.
