The city of Big Rapids will host a ribbon-cutting at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, in Hemlock Park for a fish sculpture.

Located between the Muskegon River and the softball field, the sculpture serves as both a piece of local art and a recycling container for glass and plastic bottles. The project was commissioned by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Big Rapids and fabricated by Ferris State University welding engineering students.

“This fish represents the driving force behind GFWC’s Community Service Programs Arts & Culture, Civic Engagement and Outreach, Education and Libraries, Environment and Health and Wellness,” GFWC member Linda Telfer said. “This is in keeping with our motto of ‘Working for a Better Community.’”

Associate Professor Mark Prosser and students Case Hummel and Jace Burns led construction of the fish.

Representatives from the city of Big Rapids, Mecosta Recycles, GFWC and Ferris State University are expected to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
