Big Rapids approves three-year deer cull contract

Category: Local News

The Big Rapids City Commission voted unanimously Monday to authorize a multi-year deer cull.

Under a contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services, the city can obtain deer removal permits and remove deer in high-complaint areas.

The three-year agreement takes effect Dec. 1, 2026. The cost is not to exceed $15,000 a year.

“Last time we signed a three-year contract, I think it was $21,000,” City Manager Mark Gifford said. “This time it's for $15,000, which might mean a slightly smaller amount of deer removed, but we believe that it's one of those things that it's more consistency than anything. If we consistently do it, it shows we're recognizing and addressing a problem that they have in their neighborhood or near their home or business.”

Culls typically occur between Jan. 1 and March 1 during nighttime hours, with trained USDA staff using suppressed rifles.

Big Rapids Police Chief David Flore will work with the USDA to identify areas with high deer numbers. Areas mentioned during the meeting include Sherman Street, Sanborn Avenue, Perry Avenue and State Street. Ferris State University property may be included, because it borders some of those areas.

“We're polling the community to make sure that we address any target areas,” Flore said. “We have received what I would think is substantial feedback, which is consistent with what patrol sees driving around as well.”

The M-37 Meat Shack will process deer taken in the cull, and the meat will be donated locally through the Hunters Against Hunger program.
