The Newaygo County Sportsman’s Club suffered a devastating fire Sunday, Oct. 11.
A fire was reported around 5:18 p.m., with heavy smoke visible from the building. Fire crews from Croton, Newaygo, Sand Lake, Grant, Big Prairie, Howard City and White Cloud battled the blaze as late as 9 p.m.
“Our Sportsman’s Club family is devastated following tonight’s fire at the Club,” the club said in a Facebook post. “We ask that you please keep everyone affected in your thoughts and prayers.”
The cause of the fire remained unknown as of 7:30 a.m. Monday, and an investigation is underway.
The membership-based nonprofit, established in 1963, was built around wildlife conservation, hunting, fishing, shooting and other outdoor activities.
“Our Club has always been more than just a place to gather,” the club said. “It’s a community of friends who come together, support one another, and stand strong during difficult times. Please give us some time to gather our thoughts and information regarding our plan going forward.”
The club is located at 7951 Elm Avenue, just off M-82 between Howard City and Newaygo.
