Marvin Nyman Sr., 92, of Big Rapids

Marvin Nyman Sr., a beloved figure in Big Rapids, passed away on April 13, 2024, at The Brook of Big Rapids.

He was born on August 15, 1931, to Anna Nyman. Marvin was born, raised and attended school in Big Rapids while working on the family farm. Marvin's journey was marked by courage, service, and dedication.

A proud veteran, Marvin served his country with honor in the U.S. Army's 126th Infantry Division, stationed in the Philippines and later in Japan. During his military career, he served in both the military police and military intelligence. His commitment to duty continued as he was hired by Union City (MI) as the village’s first Chief of Police. He was the youngest chief of police in the nation at that time.

On January 1, 1958, Marvin was hired by the State of Michigan to work as a food inspector, and one year later was hired by the Department of State. While employed by the Secretary of State, he served as enforcement officer for Ionia, Barry, and Eaton counties. In 1968 he became regional manager for all of Western Michigan, responsible for all driver licensing. Marvin supervised the Department of State enforcement officers, state driver’s license re-examiners, and driver’s license appeal boards. He was also involved with the development of the first state-operated license bureau and its implementation throughout Western Michigan. Marvin conducted one of the first surveys to determine alcohol involvement in fatal motor vehicle accidents for the Secretary of State and State Safety Commission. He received national recognition for this effort from many state universities and safety organizations. With 45 years of service in government roles, Marvin's legacy was etched as the Administrative Assistant to the Director of Field Operations for the Michigan Secretary of State Department, where his leadership and integrity were exemplary.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Marvin found joy in creativity and the great outdoors. Whether crafting jewelry, designing fish lures, or pursuing his passion for hunting and fishing, he embraced life with enthusiasm and skill. Marvin was also a huge fan of NASCAR, especially a big fan of #43 Richard Petty.

A faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Big Rapids, Marvin's spiritual foundation guided his actions and touched the lives of those around him.

Marvin leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, survived by his children Marvin Jr. (Vickie) Nyman, Julie (Pat) Miles, Jack (Vickie) Nyman, and Carol Nyman, along with his stepson L. R. Cole and cherished grandchildren Sarah, Matthew, Jackson, and Victor. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Donna in 2000.

Marvin Nyman Sr. will be remembered fondly for his kindness, strength, and unwavering commitment to family and community. No services are planned at this time. Those desiring may make a donation in his name to ARC of Mecosta County. Care and arrangements are entrusted to the Mohnke Janowicz Funeral Home in Big Rapids.
