Kent Gerald Parker, 80, of Grand Rapids

Kent Gerald Parker, born October 11, 1943, in Aurora, Illinois, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. Born to Vern and Ardis Parker, Kent spent his early years in Aurora before moving with his family to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1950, where he would plant deep roots for the rest of his life.
Kent dedicated much of his career to sales for 30 years and working for Steelcase for 16 years, where he formed countless relationships through his warmth and charm. Later, he followed his passion and became the proud owner of the Outback Lodge and Stables, which he ran with pride for 20 years. His ability to make anyone feel welcome was a true gift, and his love for the great outdoors was always on full display.
In 1974, Kent married the love of his life, Susan Wernette, with whom he shared 49 years of joy, laughter, and devotion. Together, they raised four incredible children. Family was Kent’s heart and soul, and he found immense joy in spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Kent was a man of simple pleasures and deep loves. He reveled in time spent outdoors, enjoying camping, boating at Silver Lake, snow and water skiing, and playing golf. He also had a competitive spirit when it came to cards, and many memorable evenings were spent around the table with family and friends. Kent was an avid sports fan, passionately cheering on the Detroit Red Wings, Lions, University of Michigan football, and his family members as they played sports.
Music filled Kent’s life—he loved to sing, and his home was often filled with the sound of his voice. He had a sweet tooth that couldn’t be denied, particularly for giant cinnamon rolls, and roses of all kinds were his favorite flowers.
Kent is survived by his loving wife Sue, his four children, Tiffany (Andy) Taft, Tom (Amy) Parker, Tanya (Chris) Sawicki, and Troy (Amy) Parker, his beloved grandchildren, McKenzie, Parker, Kaden, Ava, Breton, Jake, Abby, Gregory, Lane, Sadie, and 5 great- grandchildren, and a circle of dear friends. He was a man who touched many lives with his kindness, humor, and warmth, and he will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will take place on Thursday, September 19, at 11 AM at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Remus, Michigan, with Pastor Tom Boufford celebrating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. A luncheon will take place after the service. Those desiring donations may be directed to the family, with envelopes available at the church.
