Phillip Middleton, 77, of Big Rapids, passed away on October 8, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones, following a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. He was born on August 10, 1947, in Rocks, Maryland, to John and Merlissie (Tyson) Middleton and was raised in Atlanta, Georgia.
Phillip was drafted into the United States Army and served his country during the Vietnam era. Following his service, he pursued higher education, he attended Tennessee State and Southern Illinois University and earned his PhD. In 1987, he married Theresa Broderick, and together they shared a lifetime of love, travel, and unforgettable memories.
After several years, Phillip settled in Big Rapids, where he became a professor of English Literature at Ferris State University. For over 25 years, he passionately shared his knowledge and love for literature with countless students, leaving a lasting impact on the academic community.
Phillip had many hobbies and interests, including swimming, tennis, backgammon, and martial arts. He was also an avid reader and writer, and he loved spending time with his family, whether traveling or enjoying simple moments at home. His presence, humor, and dedication to his loved ones will be dearly missed.
Phillip is survived by his beloved wife, Theresa Middleton, and his daughter, Zoë Middleton. He is also remembered by extended relatives, friends, and colleagues who cherished his warmth and wisdom.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Merlissie Middleton, and his siblings, Ann Reed and Johnsy Middleton.
