David Allan Montgomery, age 72, better known as Pops, is now walking barefoot in God's forest. He passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at home in Marion, Michigan. David was born on January 10, 1953 to Leonard and Lorraine (Richardson) Montgomery in Wisconsin where he was raised. In his late teens, the family moved to Detroit where he met the Steadman’s. Mrs. Steadman saw a family in need and with her husband’s consent and a mutual agreement amongst parents and child, David went to live with them under the conditions that he attend church and retain a job. Eager to work and having Mr. Steadman as a reference, he gained employment at General Motors where he worked for 24.5 years.
Steadman’s daughter, Sherry, was intrigued by David’s free spirit and caring nature. They fell in love, were married and had two children, David Daniel & Maranda. In 1996, following a forced closure by GM, Pops decided to head North to Evart, where he could enjoy the outdoors, hunting and fishing, feed the birds, and keep his eye on his baby girl. He thrived in the woods and lived his life like he was camping.
He was tough, giving, lived his best life but a hard life, passed on his knowledge of the outdoors as a Boy Scout leader, and loved his family unconditionally with care and compassion- even his wildly farrell dog, Max.
Pops is survived by: children, David Montgomery of Reed City and Maranda Montgomery of Marion; two grandchildren, Kane Foster and, Kylie Tripp; three great-grandchildren (who he was pretty proud of); one brother, William Montgomery and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends, who will continue to hold the memories they have close to their hearts.
Pops is now reunited with: his parents, in-laws, Arthur Steadman and Betty (Billy) Whitt; and siblings, Robert, Tim, Clayton and Donnie Montgomery, Cynthia Lavoie and Sandra Drummond.
Even though Sherry and David divorced he still remained close to her until her passing in 2022.
Visitation was held from 3PM to 5PM on Monday, February 24th at the Corey Funeral Home in Evart, with Words of Remembrance at 4:30PM. David will be laid to rest in the spring at Osceola Township Cemetery, Evart, MI.
