Burl Eugene Near of Reed City, Michigan passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025, at the Reed City Nursing Center at the age of 78. 

Burl was born on January 4, 1947, in Muskegon, Michigan and grew up in Shelby, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett Near and Juanda Near Hasty: and one brother Stanley Near. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marlene Near of Reed City, a son Timothy Near of Reed City and a daughter Kristin (Dan) Benedict of Ionia, Michigan. Burl taught elementary school for the Pine River School district and after retiring from Pine River he went on to teach at Baker College in Cadillac, Michigan. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Reed City, Michigan where he served in many capacities at the church and summer elementary camp counselor at Lake Michigan United Methodist Church Camp in Pentwater, Michigan. Burl was an Air Force veteran serving as an Air Traffic Controller during the Vietnam War in Southeast Asia and was a lifetime member of the Reed City VFW where he was also a member of the drill squad participating in many funerals of his fallen comrades. After serving in the Air Force, he went on to Central Michigan University where he earned his Master’s degree in Elementary Education. In Burl’s free time he enjoyed long weekend get-aways with Marlene, dining out, watching the Lions play, and spending time with family. Burl was also heavily involved with Tim and Kristin’s school and band activities while they were in school, never missing an event, even traveling to the event no matter how far it was. He was also involved in Boy Scouts while Tim earned his Eagle Scout and was also involved in Odyssey of the Mind during his teaching years. Burl had a deep faith in God that was witnessed by many throughout his life by the love for his family, friends, and country. He touched the hearts of all who knew him and will be greatly missed. 

A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Reed City, Michigan on Saturday, March 22, 2025, with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. with the Memorial Service to begin at 11:00 a.m.  A luncheon catered by Pier Marquette Catering will follow at the church fellowship hall.  Donations can be made to the Reed City United Methodist Church in Burl’s name.
