Mel Kent Boyd, age 76 of Evart, MI, passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Northwoods, in Farwell where he had resided the last few months. Mel was born on January 13, 1949, in Big Rapids to James “Kent” and Isabelle (Dietdrich) Boyd. He was raised in Grant Center and graduated from Evart High School in 1967. In 1971, Mel graduated with a major in Political Science from Michigan State University.
On September 11, 1970 he married the love of his life, Tamara Beilfuss in Reed City. They made their home and raised their family in Grant Center where he was a respected dairy farmer for 25 years before moving to Evart in 1996. Prior to working a short time, as the night auditor, at the Osceola Grand Hotel, he was the ranch manager, for 14 years, at Spring Hill in Evart.
Throughout the years he was a member of many farming organizations, sat on the Evart School Board for eight years and was more than happy to discuss current issues. He loved talking to people, and they enjoyed his dry sense of humor. He was an avid reader who liked to fish, hunt and plant trees. Mel was very knowledgeable and well read, with an appetite to always learn something new. He was mechanically gifted, and enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together. His kindness showed in his love of animals, nature, and working with others.
Everyone that knew him experienced his love, compassion and work ethic. Left to treasure the memories they have are: his beloved wife of 54 years, Tamara of Evart; two sons, Kurt (Nicole) Boyd of Clare, Kevin (Angela) Boyd of Evart; one daughter, Caitlin (Freddy) Peralta of Chicago; five grandchildren, Preston Boyd, Paige (James) Stevens, Aidan, Allison and Abigail Boyd; one great grandson, Atlas James Stevens; two sisters, Lynn (Dean) Fiegel of Three Rivers and Karen (Steve) Lowry of Paris; and many cousins, extended family and close friends.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents, Kent and Isabelle Boyd, and infant sister, Katherine A. Boyd.Cremation and care were entrusted to the Corey Funeral Home in Evart.
