Leopold Baker age 97, of Lake (formerly of Owosso), passed away on Friday, August 8 2025, at Medi Lodge in Clare. Leo was born June 26, 1928, in Saginaw, the son of Jacob and Eva (Genter) Baker. He was the second youngest of nine children, all of whom he outlived. He graduated from Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw, and entered the army, serving in the United States Signal Corps during the Korean War, where he hauled heavy equipment up icy mountain trails in order to facilitate Allied communications. Upon returning home he began a long career with General Telephone (Verizon), starting as a switchman and retiring as the Eastern Michigan Division Manager.

On January 17, 1953, Leo married Marion Engstrom, and they raised their family first in Muskegon and later in Corunna. Leo was active in the Owosso Kiwanis for many years as well as in the men’s group of the First United Methodist Church of Owosso. He was an avid golfer and was a competitive player well into his 80’s. Upon retirement, Leo and Marion continued to enjoy golfing and spent their winters in Arizona. They also traveled all over the world with friends.

Leo is survived by: daughters, Merri Ann Baker (John Radcliffe) of Lake, Donna L. (John) Jenkins of Jeffersonville, IN and Carol L. (Larry) Neeper of Lake; sister-in-law, Julie (Mark) Austin; 8 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; extended family, and his church family at Brooks Corners United Methodist Church. Leo was preceded in death by: his beloved wife, Marion and grandson, Aaron Neeper.

A graveside service will be held at 11 AM, Thursday, August 14th at Roselawn Cemetery in Saginaw with Pastor James Britt officiating. Leo will be interred next to his wife, Marion. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to Brooks Corners United Methodist Church, 5951 30th Ave., Sears, MI 49679.
