Alan Lee Former, 78

Alan Lee Former, 78, of Big Rapids, passed away at home on August 16, 2025. On July 25, 1947, Alan was born to Herman and Doris (Roeters) Former in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

As a young man, Alan was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After his honorable discharge, Alan worked as an electrician and a fire fighter, eventually climbing the ranks to Chief of Blue Lake Township Fire and Rescue in Kalkaska, Michigan. He also worked for Sara Lee for nearly six years. Alan was a dedicated member of the VFW Post #6252 in Comstock Park, as well as the local Sportsman's Club. Being a sportsman, Alan loved to fish and hunt, and he believed in the importance of eating what he caught. He also enjoyed working with firearms. Above all, Alan loved his country and his community.

Alan is survived by his two loving sons, Mike and Mark Former; sisters: Pat Sanborn and Mary Hamilton; sister-in-law: Gail Former; grandchildren: Payton Former, Blake Collins, and Tyler Kratz, as well as several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and extended family and friends that love and miss him.

He is predeceased by his wife, Hope Former, and brother, Richard.
