Kathleen Joy Payton, 71

Kathleen Joy Payton, age 71, passed away unexpectedly on September 22, 2025. She was born on August 26, 1954, to Clifford and Lillian (Dunn) Atwood.

Kathy spent more than 20 years working in Home Health Care. She lovingly cared for her own mother for more than six years, an experience that deepened her compassion for helping others. Kathy treated her clients as if they were her own family. Often taking them on various outings or out to lunch simply to brighten their day.

In her free time, Kathy enjoyed time with family and often took care of her grandkids. She loved going to yard sales, the beach and taking photos of her loved ones (even when they weren’t looking). Kathy loved attending family reunions and looked forward to her family’s annual trip to the U.P. each year. There she enjoyed sight seeing and visiting numerous gift shops.

Kathy’s heart, however, belonged to her family. She recently celebrated 47 years of marriage with her husband, Ed, who was her best friend. She was a devoted mom and the proudest grandmother, cheering her family on at every turn. She was the kind of grandma who never needed a reason to spoil her grandkids—whether it was a trip for ice cream, surprise gifts, or hours spent building crafts.

Her playful side made her unforgettable. At family gatherings, and banquets with her sisters-in-law—Kathy’s antics were a highlight. If a room grew too quiet, she would always make you laugh. Her sense of humor turned many ordinary moments into cherished memories.

Kathy will be remembered for her strength, selflessness, and ability to make everyone around her feel loved. Her laughter, smile, and every beautiful memory with her will live on in the hearts of her family and all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Kathleen is survived by her loving husband, Edward “Ed” Payton; her children, Jody (Robert) Zuern, Micky Payton, Heath (Tara) Payton, and Penny (Bill) Myers; her grandchildren, Londyn, Haidyn, Atlas, Bradlee (Stephanie), Christina, Hannah, and Blake; three great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Denny (Robin) Atwood, Gary (Nida) Atwood, Tim (Toni) Atwood, and Doug (Sue) Atwood. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cherished cousins and friends who will hold her memory close.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her loving parents and son Ralph.

A memorial celebration will be held at the Resurrection Life Church of Big Rapids on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at 11:00 AM with a luncheon to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations towards service arrangements can be sent directly to the funeral home, or directly to the family at their Venmo link: https://venmo.com/u/Jody-Zuern.
