Ernest Smith, 74, of Big Rapids, passed away on Friday, March 20, 2026.
He was born on April 20, 1951, in Greenville, the son of Ray and Alma (Nelson) Smith. He was united in marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Priscilla Lile. Together, they built a life centered on love, family, and a strong foundation that carried them through the years.
Ernest worked for several years as an electrician with IBEW Local 876 before owning and operating his own business, G & S Weatherization. In his later years, he owned and operated the U-Haul in Roger’s Heights. He took great pride in his work and valued the relationships he built with his customers, always striving to balance hard work with meaningful time spent with family.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping, hunting, and fishing. Ernest had a curious and creative mind—he loved collecting coins, inventing contraptions, and even keeping an occasional lookout for Sasquatch. A comedian at heart, he had a gift for bringing laughter into any room. He was truly a jack of all trades, respectful to all, and especially mindful to thank veterans for their service.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Priscilla Smith; children, Jeffery (Stacey) Smith, Toby (Melissa) Smith, Tracey (Ronald) Clark, and Terry (Jamie) Smith; grandchildren, Allyssa, Jakie, Tyler, Trevor, Tobie, Camden, Corbin, Olivia, Brianna, Andrew, Taylor, and Tanner; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Ray Smith, Bradley Smith, and David (Bonnie) Smith; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ronald Smith.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at 3:00 P.M. at Daggett Gilbert Funeral Homes, Big Rapids. A luncheon will follow at the Stanwood Eagles. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 23, 2026, from 4:00–7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
He will be laid to rest at West Cemetery.
