Dolores A. Gilbert, 89, passed away on April 29, 2026, at Lakeview Terrace, surrounded by family and under the loving care of their wonderful staff and hospice team. She enjoyed her final year at Lakeview Terrace, making many new friends and being one of the “porch ladies” meeting and greeting people as they visited.
Dolores was born August 18, 1936, to Lou and Agnes (Hatinger) Sagendorf. At the age of two years old, her father passed away, and Agnes re-married to Lyman Saxton. Lyman became her loving dad and always treated her as his beloved daughter.
Dolores graduated from Lakeview High School in the class of ’54. She married her high school sweetheart and best friend, Larry Gilbert on August 5, 1955. Together they shared almost 68 years of marriage before Larry’s passing in July of 2023.
She became a farmer’s wife and homemaker, making wonderful meals, baking, and sewing for the family. When herself and Larry sold the farm, she pursued her love of antiques and opening her shop “Granny’s Antiques”.
Dolores and Larry had many wonderful trips in their coachman campervan. Traveling to visit friends and family, while making many stops along the way to find treasures for her shop and collection of R.S Prussia Porcelain. She was a member of the R.S Club, attending yearly conventions, of which she was proud to be able to give a seminar to share her research and knowledge.
The couple also enjoyed riding snowmobiles and motorcycles on the trails around their cabin, weekly card games, going out for Sunday breakfast with Rick and Cathy, being around family, sharing stories and family history, and taking rides with Rick and Brenda, were some of things they loved doing.
Dolores is proceeded in death by her loving husband, Larry Gilbert, parents, parent-in-laws, John and Athol Gilbert, son-in-law, Rick Ackerson, brother-in law’s, John (Margret) Gilbert and Lum Feutz, and Nephew, Danny Gilbert.
She is survived by her daughters, Cathy Ackerson of Lakeview and Julie Menard of Dickinson, North Dakota. Son, Gary (Julie) Gilbert of Nashville, Michigan. Brother, Lynn(Edna)Saxton and sister Jane Feutz. Grandchildren, Lisa (Tim) Young, Katie (Mike) Burgess, Aaron Gilbert, Nick Gilbert, John Menard and Garrett (Kamrey) Pearson. Great grandchildren, Cameron, Sydney, and Dakota (Shelby) and one great-great grandchild, along with many nieces and nephews.
Per Dolores’s wishes, there will be no services at this time. A private graveside service for the family, will be scheduled later.
In lieu of flowers, Dolores would have liked donations to made to the Lakeview Museum Building Fund, 107 N. Lincoln Ave, Lakeview, MI, 48850 (Attn: Building Fund on the memo line) or a donation to a charity of your choosing.
Dolores will be remembered for her stories, her witty sarcasm, and her listening and caring advice she gave to those in need.
