Thane J. Hess, 91, passed away on May 2, 2026. He was born on April 28, 1935, in Big Rapids to Louis and Celia (Thompson) Hess.

A lover of the outdoors, Thane spent a great deal of time hunting, fishing, and harness racing. He also found great joy and was talented in woodworking. He could often be found in the presence of family, or sitting with his beloved dog, Elle'.

Thane is survived by his wife: Lori Carpenter-Hess; children: Vicky (Tim) Pendergrass; grandchildren: Ashley (Keith) Durham, Matthew (Kayla) Chupp, Veronica (Benjamin) Becker, and Alexandra (Dustin) Hess-Mathews; nine great-grandchildren; and his brother: Leonard Hess. He is also survived by extended additional family: David (Lisa) Pook, Dawn (Tom) Stapert, and MaryBeth Pook (Mike Smith).

He is preceded in death by his son: Ron Hess; siblings: Stanley Hess and Maxine Lutz; and both parents.

Arrangements are in the care of Daggett Gilbert Funeral Homes, Big Rapids. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, May 7, 2026 at 4:00 PM, with a funeral service taking place at 6:00 PM.
