Frederick James Karns, 94

Frederick James Karns, age 94 of Hersey Twp., passed away on July 1, 2026 at Corewell Health Big Rapids Hospital. Fred was born in Reed City, Michigan, on October 17, 1931 to Frederick P. and Esther (Holmquist) Karns. He graduated from Reed City High School in 1949 and entered into the United States Navy. He proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in 1956.

On October 30, 1964 he married Linda L. Gibson at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Reed City. Fred and Linda hadn’t known each other long before their marriage, but it was a marriage meant to last. It was a marriage based on trust, commitment and understanding. They built their house together with their own four hands. Fred and Linda often sang together. He loved old songs, carols, and Christian songs.

Fred was an avid reader of author Louis L'Amour. He loved to write poetry and had a couple of works published. He was a talented, self-taught artist, often drawing and painting, portraits and landscapes. He loved Sudoku puzzles and most of all was a devout Christian.

Fred was eagerly anticipating the coming of the Lord and is with Jesus now and happy.

Fred is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years Linda; adopted son, Kelly Karns; one daughter, Kristie (Paul) Benjamin; three siblings, Joan (Larry) Herring, & Richard and David Karns; two grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many extended family and friends. Fred loved animals, including his grand cat, Harley.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Esther; siblings, Gertrude (Paul) Johns, Parmer (Ethel) Karns, Arnold (Marleah) Karns, Margaret “Peggy” (Jack) Rambadt, Arlene (Verr) Rambadt, Naomi (Lloyd) Jobes, Norman (Cheryl) Karns and Maxine Mund and sisters-in-law, Richard's first wife, Joan and second wife, Cathy and David's wife, Mona Karns.

Funeral services for Fred will take place at Corey Funeral Home on Saturday, July 4th at 3 PM. The family will greet friends from 1 to 3PM prior to the service. Memorial contributions in Fred’s name can be made to the wishes of the family. Fred will be laid to rest at 2PM on Monday at Hersey Village Cemetery.
