James “Jim” Burrell Skarda Jr., 77, of Stanwood, Michigan, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2026.

Born on August 5, 1948, in Oak Park, Illinois, Jim was the son of James and Nancy Skarda. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, a service he carried with great pride throughout his life. Jim deeply loved his country.
On September 27, 1969, Jim married the love of his life, Shirley Harr. Together they built a beautiful life centered around faith, family, and countless cherished memories while sharing over five decades of love and devotion.

A faithful member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Remus, Jim found joy in the outdoors. An avid hunter, he appreciated not only the pursuit but the stories and trophies that came with it. He made numerous trips out West enjoying hunting. He also enjoyed fishing, and snowmobiling—adventures that reflected his love of nature and his adventurous spirit. Jim was an active man with a larger-than-life personality who never met a stranger. He was known for his sense of humor, his strong opinions, his generous heart, and the deep love he had for his family. Jim was a proud Chicago sports fan through and through. He never missed an opportunity to cheer on the White Sox and the Bears, his loyalty to his teams was as steadfast as his love for the people in his life.

Above all else, Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His grandchildren brought him immeasurable pride and joy, and his greatest accomplishment was the family he loved so dearly.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley Skarda; his sons, James Skarda III, Joel (Jennifer) Skarda, and Jess (Vickie) Skarda; his brothers, Jeff (Helene) Skarda and Jack (Deirdre) Skarda; his sister, JoEllen (David) VanderPool; and his cherished grandchildren, Jaycie, Amanda, Payton, Michael, Alexis, and Jake. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Nancy Skarda.
Funeral mass will take place Friday, August 21, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church in Remus, with visitation beginning one hour prior to the service. Father Michael Alber will serve as celebrant.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 20, 2026, from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Janowicz Family Funeral Home in Remus.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Michigan in grateful appreciation for the compassionate care provided to Jim during his final days.
