Violet Uldene Wernette, age 97, of Remus, Michigan, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2026, with her loving family by her side.

Violet was born in Morley, Michigan, on August 6, 1929, the daughter of Malcolm and Ethel Stine. She moved to Remus after marrying the love of her life, Justin Wernette, on May 14, 1949. Together, Violet and Justin shared 65 beautiful years of marriage until his passing in 2016.

Their love story began just as young teens. After Justin returned home from World War II, their love story continued. The two of them spent their younger years attending dances, going to movies, and enjoying the simple moments that would become the foundation of a lifetime together.

Violet was a devoted Catholic woman whose faith was a cornerstone of her life. Upon moving to Remus, she became a faithful member of St. Michael Catholic Church, where she attended Saturday evening Mass for many years. She had a strong and unwavering faith and especially enjoyed taking religious classes taught by Father Snyder.

Violet was a homemaker and caregiver at heart. She worked as a cookie maker at Dutch Twin in Grand Rapids and helped maintain the books for Justin’s oil business while raising their children. But perhaps one of her greatest callings began when her first grandchild was born.

Violet became the babysitter everyone wished they had—a beloved caregiver to more than 40 children throughout the years. She poured her heart into caring for children, rocking generations of babies, offering endless cookies, and, when necessary, keeping everyone in line with that famous wooden spoon. She finally “hung up the wooden spoon” at the age of 86, leaving behind generations of children who were lucky enough to have been loved by her.

Cooking and baking were Violet’s love language. She was known for her wonderful cooking, homemade baked goods, and especially her cookies. She also enjoyed catering many area wedding receptions alongside her daughter, Janet, and dear friend Dolores. Whether she was cooking for a crowd or simply making something special for her family, Violet showed her love through food.

In her spare time, Violet enjoyed reading, playing cards, sitting outside in the sunshine, and spending time with the people she loved. She cherished her family above all else. Some of her most memorable adventures included trips to Arizona to visit her son and his family, as well as traveling to San Antonio to attend her grandson’s Air Force graduation—a moment of which she was incredibly proud.

Violet was also a lifetime member of the VFW Post 2335 Auxiliary, where she proudly served as treasurer for many years.
Violet leaves behind a beautiful legacy of faith, family, love, and service. She is survived by her children, Roger (Micky) Wernette, Randy (Julie) Wernette, Dennis (Kris) Wernette, Darwin (Linda) Wernette and son-in-law, Bob McCall; 16 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, along with many extended family members and friends who will forever cherish her memory.

She was preceded in death by her parents; all her siblings; her cherished husband, Justin Wernette; her daughter, Janet McCall, grandson Brandon; and great grandson’s Riese and Lincoln.

Violet’s life was not measured simply by the years she lived, but by the lives she touched. She was a woman of deep faith, a devoted wife and mother, a beloved grandmother, a caregiver to countless children, and the kind of woman whose kitchen, home, and heart always had room for one more. Her cookies, her wooden spoon, her laughter, her prayers, and the love she gave so freely will live on through the many generations she helped raise.

Funeral services will take place at St. Michael Catholic Church in Remus on Friday September 18, 2026, at 12 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Father Michael Alber as Celebrant.
Visitation will take place on Thursday September 17, 2026, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with rosary to follow starting at 7 p.m. at Janowicz Family Funeral Home in Remus.
