Bonnie Lynn Wernette, 45 “she wishes,” 81, of Mecosta, Michigan, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on October 12, 2026. Born on July 28, 1945, in Austin, Texas, to Harvey and Marjorie McGinnis.
Bonnie earned her bachelor’s degree in education and dedicated much of her life to teaching with the Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District (ISD). Her students were her entire world, becoming like a second family to her. She cared deeply for the children she taught and took great pride in making a difference in their lives. Bonnie also had the opportunity to teach in China for six months, where she cherished her time working with the children and experiencing a different culture.
Beyond the classroom, Bonnie embraced life with an adventurous spirit and a love for the arts, travel, and the outdoors. She was involved with the Canadian Lakes Players Club and Jeanine’s School of Dance in Big Rapids. She loved traveling and was always planning her next adventure, exploring destinations throughout the world and making memories along the way.
Bonnie enjoyed staying active and experiencing all that life had to offer. Whether skiing, rollerblading, snowshoeing, or finding another outdoor adventure, she was always ready to try something new. She had a deep appreciation for nature and loved her animals dearly, finding happiness in the simple pleasures of being outdoors and spending time with the things she loved most.
Bonnie will be lovingly remembered by her brother, James McGinnis; her sons, Charlie Wernette and Gene Wernette; her grandchildren, Brittany (Thomas Whip) Ensing, and Jaiden Wernette; her niece, Michele (Mark McNaught) Moore; her nephew, Kelly (Nora) McGinnis, along with many other family members, friends, former students, and colleagues whose lives she touched throughout the years.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Martin “Marty” Wernette; her parents, Harvey and Marjorie McGinnis; and her niece, Megan McGinnis.
Bonnie leaves behind a legacy of education, adventure, compassion, and a life lived to the fullest. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, especially the many students who were fortunate enough to call her their teacher and second family. In the lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that all memorial contributions be directed to the Big Rapids Humane Society in memory of Bonnie and her love for animals.
