Cynthia Lynne (Whaley) VanderVlugt, age 74 of Chase, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
She was born March 14, 1952, in Cadillac, Michigan to Kenneth and Donna (Emmons) Whaley.
Cynthia graduated from Cadillac High School in 1970 and attended Davenport College. On December 18, 1971, she married the love of her life, Humphrey VanderVlugt. Together, they made their home in Chase, Michigan, sharing nearly 55 wonderful years of marriage. Cynthia lovingly referred to Humphrey as her “favorite husband”, reflecting her sense of humor and the special bond they shared.
Cynthia retired after 20 years of dedicated service with the United States Postal Service in Reed City. She especially enjoyed golfing at the Spring Valley Golf Course, participating in golf leagues, and taking golf trips up North with the “girls”. She was particularly proud of her hole-in-one. Her other interests included scrapbooking, making homemade greeting cards, bingo, casinos, playing cards, camping, watching Judge Judy, and enjoying drives and weekend trips throughout Michigan. A lifelong Lutheran, Cynthia was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Reed City.
Above all, Cynthia cherished her family. She was incredibly proud of her children, and her grandchildren were truly her pride and joy.
Cynthia is survived by her loving husband, Humphrey VanderVlugt; son Jonathan VanderVlugt of Hammond, Indiana; daughter Rebecca (Jim Limberg) VanderVlugt of Rodney, Michigan; grandchildren Olivia and Zander Limberg; and her sister Teresa Vanhouten.
She was preceded in death by her parents Kenneth and Donna Whaley; her sister Jacqueline Harris; and her niece Anna Vanhouten.
Cynthia will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for her devotion to family, her sense of humor, and the many cherished memories she leaves behind.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 31, 2026, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, located at 22275 Four Mile Road; Reed City, MI 49677.
A luncheon will be served following services.
