Marc Allen Coon, 63, of Big Rapids, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 22, 2026. He was born September 2, 1963, in Salem, Massachusetts, the son of Richard and Roverta (Barnes) Coon.
Marc graduated from Chippewa Hills High School in 1981 and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Ferris State University in plastics and machine tool technology. He began working at a young age and was a hardworking man throughout his life. He spent much of his career in the plastics and tool and die industries before moving into pipeline work, where he served as a welding inspector in many different states. His work also took him overseas to Iran and Afghanistan, where he worked in welding and mechanical fields.
Marc was baptized at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, where he was a longtime member and faithfully served as an usher. His faith and his church were important parts of his life.
A dedicated worker, Marc was often described as a workaholic who took pride in being self-sufficient and providing for himself. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed playing his five-string banjo and taking care of his truck. He had a special love for animals, especially cats, and was always willing to care for any animal in need. Beneath his hardworking nature was a caring man who genuinely cared about people and those around him. Marc’s willingness to work hard and look after others reflected the kind of person he was.
Marc is survived by his parents, Richard and Roverta Coon; his brothers, David (Cindi) Coon and Peter Coon; and several nieces and nephews.
Marc will be remembered for his strong work ethic, caring nature, love of animals, and dedication to his family and community.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 6, 2026, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Big Rapids. Marc’s family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 5, at the Mohnke Janowicz Funeral Home in Big Rapids and again beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and School.
