City of Big Rapids under a Run Water Advisory

Due to the frigid temperatures, the City of Big Rapids is under a "Run Water Advisory" 


 

The advisory goes until further notice, according to a press release from the city. 

 

Per City policy, when you run water at your home or business, you MUST notify the City’s Treasurer’s Office at 231-592-4005.

 

The procedure for running water is to open one faucet to a pencil-lead size stream and allow that faucet to continue running water throughout the duration of the Advisory.

 

As additional information becomes available, it will be updated to the City’s website at www.cityofbr.org.

 

Mecosta Co. Detectives investigating a homicide in Barryton

The Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide in Sheridan Township.

 

The investigation has revealed that a 35-year old Barryton man was a homicide victim at his residence.

 

A 33-year old Barryton man has been arrested and charged with open murder.

 

He is lodged in the Mecosta County Jail pending arraignment at which time names of the victim and offender will be released.

 

The Sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by The MSP Crime Lab investigators.

Bill introduced in State Senate would bring back income tax credit for food donations

A bill introduced in the Michigan Senate would offer financial relief to Michigan residents by providing a tax credit for some food donations.

 

The bill would restore the income tax credit for donations made to food banks and community foundations that was eliminated in 2011.

 

It would also enable residents to claim an income tax credit of up to 50 percent of the total cash value of charitable contributions to shelters for homeless people, food kitchens, food banks or other similar organizations.

Weekend rollover accident sends two to the hospital in Mecosta Co.

Two men from Mecosta County were sent to the hospital over the weekend following a rollover accident on US-131.

 

It happened in Big Rapids Township, on US-131 near Woodward Avenue.

 

Sheriff Deputies say a 21-year old Morley man was traveling northbound on the Highway when he lost control and went off the road and rolled. 

 

A 36-year old passenger from Rodney was injured during the accident. 

 

A third man from Morley was not injured in the accident. 

 

Both the driver and 1 passenger were taken to Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital for non life threatening injuries.

Missing Isabella Co. man died from exposure according to MSP

Michigan State Police are releasing more information of the missing 84-year old Isabella County man Charles Peterson who was recently found deceased in Clare County.

 

According to troopers, they received a call Tuesday morning about a vehicle that fit the description of Patterson's vehicle in Clare County's Lincoln Township.

 

When police arrived to the scene, to discovered the body of Mr. Peterson outside of the vehicle.

 

A preliminary autopsy showed Mr. Peterson died from exposure.

 

Troopers also don't believe foul play is suspected.

Two sent to the hospital following two car accident on Northland Drive

Two people were taken to the hospital following a two car accident in Mecosta County Wednesday.

 

Sheriff Deputies say it happened on Northland Drive near 14 mile road.

 

An investigation found that a 56-year old woman from Morley, and her passenger were heading northbound on Northland Dr when the 20-year old woman, from New Era, turned in front of them. 

 

Both the 56-year old Morley woman and her passenger were taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

 

The 20-year old woman was treated at the scene and released.

Police still looking for leads in Lake Co. homicide case one year later

January 10th marked one year since the homicide of Evelyn Louise Ware.

 

Evelyn was discovered deceased beneath the rubble of a house fire at her home in Lake County's Ellsworth Twp.

 

The Lake County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Ms. Ware’s death a homicide. Detectives from the Michigan State Police (MSP) continue to investigate this case and encourage anyone with information to come forward.

 

There is still up to a five thousand dollar reward in place for anyone who contributes information that leads to an arrest in this case.

UPDATE: Second person dies in three vehicle crash in Montcalm County Sunday

A second person has now died from a crash in Montcalm County that killed a nine month old baby on Sunday.

 

An 18-year-old woman has also died from the crash on M-46 at North Amble Road in Winfield Township when a pickup truck hit the back of a car which sent it across the center line where it was hit by another pickup.

 

18-year-old Samantha Baker and the baby, Annalee Baker, were both in the car.

 

Four others were injured in the crash.

9-month old dies in three vehicle accident in Montcalm Co.

A nine month old baby girl was killed in a crash in Montcalm County's Winfield Township Sunday.

 

Michigan State Police say a pickup truck hit the back of an eastbound car at the intersection of M-46/Howard City and North Amble Road.

 

The car was pushed across the center line and was hit by another pickup truck.

 

The baby was in the car and died at the scene.

 

An 18-year-old woman in the car was airlifted to a Grand Rapids hospital with critical injuries.

 

Two others in the car are hospitalized with less serious injuries.

 

The pickup drivers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The crash is being investigated.

Icy road conditions cause several car accidents in Mecosta Co.

Icy road conditions around Mecosta County caused several car accidents on Wednesday.

 

Three people were sent to the hospital following a rollover accident on US-131 Wednesday.

 

It happened on the southbound side, Sheriff Deputies say the driver of the vehicle lost control on the slippery road, went off the road and rolled over.

 

The three passengers in the vehicle were taken to a local hospital for treatment for their injuries.

 

Meanwhile, a 55-year old Big Rapids man was sent to the hospital after losing control of his vehicle and rolling over.

 

It happened on US-131 near 6 Mile Rd. Police say the driver was traveling northbound when he lost control of his vehicle ran off the road and overturned.

 

The driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

 

And finally a two car accident one driver was Mecosta woman was taken to the hospital following a two car accident in Martiny Township.

 

It happened at the intersection of 110th Ave and 14 Mile Rd, deputies say 40-year old Grand Rapids woman was traveling northbound on 110th Ave when she was unable to stop at the signed intersection due to her speed on the icy road. 

 

She struck a 47-year old woman from Mecosta who was heading eastbound on 14 Mile Rd. 

 

The 47-year old female was taken by EMS to Spectrum Health BR Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Big Rapids woman dies in Montcalm Co. Jail

A 34-year old female inmate who was found unresponsive Sunday in the Montcalm Co. Jail has died. 

 

Sheriff Mike Williams says when Amber Lyane Bills of Big Rapids was found corrections officers immediately administered CPR and called for medical assistance but were unable to revive her.

 

Williams says Bills was being held on two contempt of court charges and a no operator’s license on person charge.

 

An autopsy has been performed and revealed an undiagnosed perforated ulcer.

 

The final report from the Medical Examiner is pending. 

The Sheriff has requested that a Michigan Sheriff’s Association MISSION team conduct an external review of the incident.
