Plans announced to rename local highway after fallen veteran from Stanwood

State Representative Tom Kunse, R-Clare, reintroduced the renaming of a portion of US-131 near Big Rapids after Sergeant Matthew Webber, an army veteran. Webber passed away due to wounds sustained overseas.

After the accident, Webber survived five and a half months in a U.S. Hospital, where staff began calling him “Miracle Matt” because of how long he was able to keep fighting despite injuries.

“Sgt. Webber symbolizes what it means to be a true American hero who sacrificed everything for their country,” said Kunse, R-Clare. “It is an honor that I am able to contribute to ensuring that Matthew’s legacy will live on for future generations.”

Webber, who was from Stanwood, enlisted in the Army National Guard during his junior year of high school. He rose to the rank of Sergeant and assumed the role of squad leader. He served in the United States Army from 2000 until he passed in 2006. His service was recognized with the Purple Heart and Bronze Star awards. He also was posthumously awarded a degree from Western Michigan University.

“After hearing Matthew’s incredible story, we knew we had to do everything we could to honor his legacy,” Kunse said. “My team dedicated their personal time to help raise the $6,000 it costs to purchase and install the signage if my bill were to be signed into law. I’m incredibly proud to have a staff that goes the extra mile for our community.”

When the Stanwood community learned of the effort to have the Muskegon River overpass on US-131 named after him, they rallied together to raise all that was needed for Webber’s sign.

While the Legislature must approve a highway naming, the cost of purchasing and installing the signage usually falls back on the family of the person being recognized.

The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee heard testimony on the bill Tuesday morning. It passed through the committee unanimously.

Tree clearing set to begin near wetlands for Roben-Hood Airport runway project

Tree clearing near the wetlands surrounding Roben-Hood Airport will soon be underway as part of the long-planned runway extension project. This initial work marks the beginning of a critical infrastructure improvement aimed at enhancing airport safety, accommodating larger aircraft, and supporting future aviation growth.

This project is entirely separate from the proposed Gotion development and has been in the works for the last 15 years. The runway extension is being funded through City funds, federal and state aviation grants and follows strict environmental guidelines to minimize impact on the surrounding wetlands.

"When I was at the MAAE Conference in Lansing last week, an MDOT official told me this runway extension project is the biggest general aviation project in the state of Michigan," said Roben-Hood Airport Director Kendra Herrema. "This extension will allow the airport to better serve the community and improve operational efficiency while maintaining a strong commitment to environmental stewardship."

The clearing process is being conducted with oversight from environmental agencies to ensure compliance with wetland conservation regulations. Following this phase, additional site preparation and infrastructure improvements will continue throughout the year, with full construction on the runway extension expected to begin later in 2025.

Residents can expect to see increased activity near the airport in the coming weeks as the project progresses. The City of Big Rapids and airport officials will provide regular updates to keep the community informed.

For more information on the runway extension, visit cityofbr.org or follow Roben-Hood Airport on social media through its Facebook page.

Cardinals' season ends in a Hart-breaking loss to Pirates

Big Rapids boys’ basketball season came to an end Wednesday night, as the Cardinals fell to the Hart Pirates 56-55 in a heartbreaking loss at Newaygo High School.

The Cardinals dominated the start of the game, leading 15-4 after the first quarter behind exquisite defense and points inside the paint. Unfortunately, senior center Ty Gielczyk was knocked out of the game with an ankle injury in the second quarter and Hart took the opportunity to cut the game close behind some three-point baskets.

The Pirates continued the massive run to take a near double-digit lead going into the fourth quarter. Big Rapids would fight back to get the game to one possession late, where a Gabe Njenga dunk in the final seconds would put the Cardinals one point short of forcing overtime.

Njenga led the Cardinals with an estimated 20 points on the night and eight rebounds. Liam McLaughlin added 12 points while freshman Drue Haist added eight off the bench. Cole Haist was held to three points with multiple assists and JaReese Moten added six steals defensively.

Hart was paced by 16 points and eight rebounds from Caleb Ackley as well as 12 points from Avery Guikema. Kolton Rockwell added nine points and multiple assists. The Pirates will face Ludington on Friday night for the District 35 Championship with the win.

Big Rapids finishes the season with 16-7 record and finishes second place in the CSAA-Red conference. The Cardinals graduate five seniors, including starters Gabe Njenga, JaReese Moten, and Ty Gielczyk as well as Kingston McKinney and Xavier Mishler off the bench.

Developers interested in multi-story apartments project near Woodward Avenue

According to the City of Big Rapids, a multi-state developer is interested in constructing a multi-story apartment complex to help with income-based housing in Big Rapids.

The complex would be located at 1201 Woodward Ave, using a five-acre parcel of land between Woodward and Fuller Ave. Those five acres would require a re-zoning from R-1 to R-3 for development of the project.

Wallick Communities and Spruce Ridge Development are the companies partnering on the project.

“Currently they are proposing two three-story apartment buildings,” Community Development Director Michelle Stenger said. “This request could change as it moves through the site plan review process.”

According to Stenger, the apartments would be targeting income-based family housing with two and three-bedroom apartments.

A public hearing to discuss the project was recently postponed on Feb. 19 and will be made up at the April Planning Meeting.

“(City of Big Rapids) staff believes there is a need for all types of housing in Big Rapids,” Stenger said.

Hillcrest and Apple Ridge Apartments, nearby complexes to the project’s proposed location, are located on the west side of Fuller Ave.

Hauck votes to stand with small businesses and preserve Michigan jobs

Sen. Roger Hauck, R-Mt. Pleasant, issued the following statement on Thursday after the Senate voted to send legislation to preserve the state’s tip credit and reforms to the paid sick leave law to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for her signature:

“This isn’t a fairy-tale deal where everyone got exactly what they wanted, but this is a workable solution and far better than what was going to take place if the Legislature chose to do nothing.

“Our hospitality industry and countless small businesses would have faced devastating consequences had the Legislature not acted. Business owners and workers from across the state made clear what these extreme new mandates would have meant for them: In the best-case scenario, many servers would have taken a pay cut and businesses would have had to lay people off. The worst-case scenario was countless businesses closing their doors for good.

“I am happy we were able to negotiate a deal — though waiting until the last second is far from an effective or preferred way to legislate. My Republican colleagues and I pushed for Democratic leadership to take this issue seriously for months, to no avail, but were ultimately able to lead negotiations and force a deal to be put on the table.

“In the end, we were able to get it done and send a bipartisan agreement to the governor’s desk, where I hope to see it signed into law this evening to avoid the looming economic disaster.”

Big Rapids' July 3rd fireworks show now in limbo

During Monday’s city commission meeting, a proposal for the City of Big Rapids funding this year’s Jul. 3 fireworks celebration did not pass.

“I guess no fireworks this year,” Mayor Fred Guenther said following the vote.

Last year, the Mecosta County Visitors Bureau organized the fireworks as a service project. On Monday, City Manager Mark Gifford approached the “MCVB” Board President was told they didn’t have the same interest this year.

“They are not interested in funding a traditional firework show,” Gifford said. “They were more interested in looking into a drone show.”

According to Gifford, pricing roams around a $1,000 per minute for a complete fireworks show. The City has donated $5,000 each year towards the show, but fully funding the event would cost an estimated $23,000.

“Last year, all these organizations and the 'Convention Bureau' stepped up,” Guenther said. “This year, no one is interested and stepping up.”

Jaycees hosted the fireworks event for many years until 2020, with other organizations like the Lions Club and Visitor’s Bureau stepping in over the past few years.

“Is it the purview of the City to fund the fireworks display for a community, that's not willing to come out and financially support it with its service organizations. That’s the question I am considering.” Commissioner Amanda Johnson said.

Johnson, who stated she takes her kids to the show every year, voted no to proposal. Guenther, along with Commissioners David Rhodes and Lorraine James, voted yes. Commissioner Karen Simmon was absent from the meeting due to personal reasons. The proposal needed four yes votes to pass.

The Mecosta County Fair Board have agreed to host the fireworks at the fairgrounds but have stated there cannot have alcohol or bands within the show.

Result of the voting does not immediately cancel the event, but funding will now have to be reached by an outside organization.

Cardinals edge Eagles thanks to second half comeback

Big Rapids trailed by six at the half, but the Cardinals battled back to beat the Eagles on Tuesday night.

It wasn't the prettiest win for the Cardinals, but it was enough for their 15th win of the season and their sixth road win of the season.

Big Rapids started out the game strong, leading 7-2 in the game's opening minutes. Ty Gielczyk, in his first game back in multiple weeks from injuries, contributed multiple of Big Rapids' 11 first quarter points. Kent City would respond with some long three-point shots, earning a 16-11 first quarter lead.

The Eagles would keep the shots going into the second, stretching the lead following multiple Big Rapids turnovers. The Cardinals would fight back within a possession, but three-pointers from Kent City's Isaiah Stuhan would get the lead to 31-25 home team.

Big Rapids would respond in a major way to start the second half, cutting the lead to 33-32 in the first two minutes of the third quarter. Long shots from Njenga and Haist would keep the run going to lead 47-46 after the third quarter.

It was a physical start to the fourth quarter, with both teams scoring buckets and fouls both ways. Big Rapids would make a run to reach a two-possession margin, but the Eagles hit some tough shots late to keep the game close. While the Cardinals struggled at the free throw line to ice, multiple key steals would end the contest for the two-point win.

Gabe Njenga led the Cardinals with 20 points and over six rebounds, followed by Gielczyk with 14 and JaReese Moten with 12 points apiece. Tanner Carlson paced Kent City with 17 points, with Isaiah Stuhan and Aaron VanderWest adding 14 a piece.

Big Rapids, who improves to 15-5 on the year, now waits for a rematch Friday night at home against the CSAA-Red dividsion leader, Grant, for a share of the conference championship. Kent City falls to 11-10 and will travel to face Morley Stanwood on Feb. 21.

Ferris State to host Career and Internship Fair on Feb. 27

“Prepare—Connect—Succeed” are fundamental considerations as Ferris State University’s Career and Professional Success office hosts the Career and Internship Fair.

The event is planned for Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Student Recreation Center, 410 South Street.

Michele Albright, Ferris State’s Career and Professional Success Career Readiness specialist and Employer liaison, said their event maximizes value for all Ferris State students.

Albright said the fair can have benefits for students beyond its morning and afternoon sessions, with opportunities to discuss internship and career prospects with focused industry participants.

“This is about offering a more engaging opportunity for every Ferris State student to gather with fellow Bulldogs so they can broaden their campus experience and create more connections within their area of interest,” Albright said. “We are asking them to begin their day in the ‘Prep Zone,’ with levels of engagement and assistance available to facilitate a successful experience for each student attending the fair.”

A “Connection Zone” will allow students to engage with peers from various professional student organizations, career resources, graduate programs, and collaborative university services, which Albright calls an important new facet of the fair.

The 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. session to meet with guest organizations will primarily serve students seeking employment connected to industries and academic programs within engineering and technology.  The second session is set from 2 to 5 p.m., encompassing business, education, healthcare, government, IT and all other industries.

Albright said more than 200 organizations will be recruiting on campus throughout the day, looking to talk about their operations and engage with students.

“Based on industry trends and student requests, this event will focus more on making connections,” Albright said, “Therefore, this event is for all students regardless of major and whether they have already found employment or are still exploring options.”

Albright said with employment shifts, she knows that increasing social capital, introducing students to career resources and technology, and providing equitable access to various situations will best prepare all Ferris State students for mobility and access.

Employer tables will be mapped to zones by industries and hiring objectives.

Many new employers are visiting campus for the upcoming career and internship fair, from the optometric field, K-12 education, behavioral sciences, business analytics, pharmaceuticals, civil engineering, agriculture, aerospace, transportation, and defense.

“We are glad to welcome each employer, whether new, returning or long-standing partners,” she said. “Many of these guests send Ferris alumni to manage their outreach, who are always excited to return with the possibility of hiring additional Ferris students and graduates.”

Albright said she hopes students make use of the tools and to get on-site easily, with shuttle bus service to the Student Rec Center throughout the day.

She directs students to preview the employers attending and create their profile in Handshake, the university’s recruiting platform, and to follow the Career & Professional Success channel in Ferris 360 beginning Feb. 17 for updates, employer listings and maps.

There will be raffles and giveaways throughout the day Feb. 27 and anyone with a disability who needs accommodation to attend the fair should contact CAPS at (231) 591-2685 or by email at least 72 hours in advance of the event.

Sen. Hauck votes for Senate compromise on tipped wage reform

Sen. Roger Hauck, R-Mt. Pleasant, issued the following statement on Thursday after the Senate voted to pass a bipartisan reform to maintain a tip credit for the state’s hospitality workers ahead of the new law taking effect next week:

“I’m not exactly happy with how this panned out or that the Senate Democrats waited so long to act on the tipped wage issue. However, I am glad my colleagues and I were able to force changes that created a final product that better reflected what workers — who made their voices clear — were asking for."

“For months, we knew a fix was needed, yet once again, Democratic leadership waited until the last minute to act," Hauck said. "With the proper consideration and diligence an issue of this magnitude deserved, we could have brought a better product to the table, but this reform does help our small businesses keep their doors open and prevent out-of-state interests from coming to Michigan and running our businesses into the ground. Ultimately, we did reach a compromise I was willing to support. This is a far cry from declaring a victory lap, but someone had to be the adult in the room and acknowledge the very real disaster that was looming with inaction.”

Big Rapids dominates Newaygo on the road for 14th victory of season

In a pivotal CSAA-Red matchup Thursday night, the Big Rapids Cardinals knocked off the Newaygo Lions 75-51 on the road behind a strong shooting performance.

Big Rapids started the game strong, scoring the game's first four points in the paint thanks to Lamont Belvin. While the Lions would claw back to get within four, a pair of three-pointers from Liam McLaughlin would push the Cardinals to a ten-point lead after the first. Big Rapids would continue the strong shooting in the second quarter, scoring off Lion turnovers and earning second-chance points to grow the lead to 14 at the half.

While Newaygo would hit some big shots to start the second half, the Cardinals resorted back to defense to settle in once again. A steal and slam by Gabe Njenga initiated a big run by Big Rapids, eventually taking the third quarter 57-35. The bench would clear for Coach Ingles in the fourth, playing all dressed players in the final frame. Great defense and offensive rebounding gave the team some massive positives the rest of the way, clinching the series sweep over Newaygo by 24.

Njenga led Cardinal scorers with 16, followed Cole Haist with 13, McLaughlin with 12, and JaReese Moten and Belvin each adding nine. Moten, Njenga, and Belvin had each reached an estimated eight rebounds on the night with Cole Haist adding over five assists. Njenga also added four blocks, all in the first half.

Isaiah Miedema led Lion scores with an estimated 13 points, followed by Ethan Reyburn and Blake Kerr with 11 apiece. Newaygo falls to 7-12 on the year with the loss and 4-5 in CSAA-Red games

Big Rapids improves to 14-5 on the season with the win and 8-1 in conference games, which gives them the opportunity to play for a share of the CSAA-Red conference championship against Grant at home next Friday night. First, the Cardinals will travel to Kent City on Tuesday night to face the Eagles.

Pregame will begin at 6:30 P.M. with tip-off following at 7:00 P.M. on WBRN.

The announcement was made on Thursday, Feb. 12. The exact timing for each store's closing date and liquidation sales period have not been announced.

Cardinals use 29-point quarter to collect victory over Lakeview Tuesday

While Lakeview started off strong, it would not be enough to deny Big Rapids their 13th win on the campaign Tuesday night.

Big Rapids began the game with points off turnovers but were answered by Lakeview's strong shooting to keep the game within four points after the first quarter, 18-14. The Cardinals then took advantage of their size, scoring multiple times inside and setting up outside shots to stretch the lead 38-27 at the half.

Big Rapids stormed out to a massive run in the second half, racking up their highest quarter total of the season behind multiple 3-pointers from both Haist brothers. The twenty-nine points would give the Cardinals a 67-38 lead heading to the final eight minutes. Many reserves for both teams saw time in the fourth, showing defensive playmaking with some blocks and steals both ways. Big Rapids would go on to win 75-45.

Leading the Cardinals was Gabe Njenga with an estimated 19 points, six rebounds, and five steals. Cole Haist followed unofficially with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Drue Haist, JaReese Moten, and Liam McLaughlin each added eight points each.

Lakeview was paced by Braden Salladay with around 13 points, followed by Damen Reed with eight and Jack Peasley with seven.

Big Rapids improves to 13-5 on the season and will head to Newaygo Thursday to face the Lions. The Cardinals defeated the conference foe 70-54 at home back on Jan. 10. Lakeview falls to 4-15 and will play Morley Stanwood at home on Friday night.

Cottage Inn Pizza coming to Big Rapids later this year

If you are a fan of pizza, subs, appetizers, or all the above, a new restaurant coming to downtown Big Rapids may suit your interest.

Cottage Inn Pizza will be heading to Big Rapids to open a new pub on downtown Michigan Ave. The unique pub-style location will be the second in Michigan for Cottage Inn Pizza, with the first being in Davison. While there is no official day scheduled, the location at 126 S Michigan Ave. is aiming for a late summer or early fall opening.

“We are very excited to have the opportunity to be part of the Big Rapids community," Cottage Inn Pizza Representative Jennie Patterson said. "We love the small-town feel of Big Rapids, and the community is full of friendly people.”

The Cottage Inn Pizza chain was founded in 1948 on Ann Arbor. It currently has over 63 operating locations across Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. Cottage Inn added nine restaurants in last year and by Summer of 2025, the franchise is aiming to open 12 more.

Across the menu, Cottage Inn Pizza and Pub offers a wide variety of menu items. Appetizers include various recipes of cheese bread and sticks, as well as pub-specialized meatballs and nachos. They also have Italian specialties such as ravioli, lasagna, calzones, and paninis. Over 16 subs are listed on their oven-toasted subs menu, which comes in 6-inch, 12-inch, and gluten-free options. The most known item within the franchise is their gourmet pizza, including six different sizes and 25 different signature creations, and a build-a-pizza option. Various shakes, salads, and bar beverage options are also included.

According to Patterson, the location is hoping to offer live trivia and music bingo on various nights.

“When the opportunity was presented that the franchise wanted to expand by opening another pub, we thought the downtown area of Big Rapids would be a perfect place. We hope (it becomes) another spot for people to get together to eat some good food, maybe have a cocktail and some fun.”

More information on the opening will be released later this year.

Cardinals crush Coyotes for season sweep in Meceola rivalry

Big Rapids’ offense came to life Friday night, thanks to an effective transition game and stingy defense to earn a 66-32 win against Reed City.

The Cardinals got out to an early 11-2 lead in the first quarter, scoring off multiple Coyote turnovers. Reed City would respond with points in the paint, cutting the deficit to 18-11 after the first quarter. The Coyotes would make some adjustments following an early timeout, but Big Rapids continued to drop three-point shots to take a 40-21 advantage at the half.

Both teams would slow the pace down to start the second half, but a strong effort on the defensive end by the Cardinals would hold the Coyotes to only four points in the third. Big Rapids would lead 55-25 thanks to a last second lay-up from Drue Haist. Caleb Somers and Roan Johnston would score for Reed City to start the fourth, but it was not enough to overcome the large deficit. Big Rapids would finish out the game with the 34-point win, increasing the margin from the 27-point win in the first meeting.

"We've landed a group of standouts that have the talent and ability to become great players and outstanding student-athletes at Ferris State," Annese said. "We're thrilled to have these young men become Bulldogs and believe they have the personality and attitude to help continue our championship tradition."

Nearly all of the student-athletes joining the Bulldog program earned all-state honors last season with a large majority helping lead their respective teams to state playoff appearances and championship success. Most also received significant NCAA Division I interest or scholarship offers.

Ferris State, which also won the GLIAC Championship this past fall, signed 19 athletes expected to play on the defensive side of the ball along with 14 projected on offense.

The Bulldogs again landed many of the state's best players in Michigan, including West Michigan products in their own backyard from high schools including Rockford, Big Rapids, Forest Hills Northern, Forest Hills Eastern, Hopkins, Grand Rapids Catholic Central, and more.

In addition, Ferris State also picked up top-level talent from the southeast side of the state and in Detroit from programs like Cass Tech, Harper Woods, Detroit Central, Warren De La Salle, Detroit Catholic Central, Belleville, and more.

This is the 14th consecutive year in which the Bulldogs generated interest and landed signees from Florida, drawing in a school-record tying 11 Sunshine State representatives featuring athletes from various talent-rich areas near Orlando, Fort Myers, Tallahassee and Tampa Bay.

The 2025 class represents the second straight year in which Ferris State has signed 11 players from the Sunshine State.

The Bulldogs also picked up two signees from the Chicago area.

The group of offensive signees includes one slot receiver, two quarterbacks, two running backs and three outside receivers along with six offensive linemen.

Defensively, the Bulldogs signed seven potential defensive backs, seven defensive linemen and five linebackers in a balanced class. Many of the individuals in the class competed as two-way players and could eventually make an impact at other positions.

Over the past four seasons of action, the Bulldogs own a 50-5 overall record and Ferris State has reached the NCAA Division II Playoffs 10 consecutive years and counting.

Ferris State has also reached the NCAA Division II National Semifinals six times in the past eight seasons of action and ranks as the country's winningest program over the past 10 full seasons in D2 Football.

Ferris State is 77-7 over the last six seasons of on-field action. The Bulldogs claimed national titles in both 2021 and 2022 along with this past fall.

Ferris State also holds the GLIAC's best mark and the best overall record of all collegiate programs in Michigan at 137-21 (.860) overall since the arrival of Annese as head coach in 2012.

Details about the signing class are available on FerrisStateBulldogs.com.

Whitehall uses strong second-quarter run to propel dominant performance over Big Rapids

Whitehall used a dominant second quarter run to hand Big Rapids their fifth loss on the season Tuesday night.

The Cardinals hung in the first quarter of the contest, holding the powerhouse Viking offense to only five points through the first eight minutes. Whitehall would answer with a vengeance to start the second quarter, using multiple three-point shots to make an 8-0 run. They would extend the lead to 29-10 at halftime.

While the Cardinals found some success getting to the rim in the second half, the Vikings would answer with three-pointers of their own to grow the lead. Both offenses would explode in the fourth quarter, combining for 41 combined points in the frame to finish the ball game.

Big Rapids was led by Gabe Njenga, who totaled an estimated 19 points on 9/21 shooting and added seven rebounds. Cole Haist added seven points, followed by JaReese Moten with four and Liam McLaughlin with three. Ty Gielczyk left the game and did not return due to a lower leg injury in the first half.

Whitehall was paced by future Western Michigan Bronco, Cam Thompson, who had approximately 21 points and 17 rebounds. Pierce Westerlund added 12 points off the bench and Brock Morningstar contributed seven.

Big Rapids falls to 11-5 on the season and will await a home, rivalry matchup against Reed City on Friday. Whitehall improves to 14-3 and will host Muskegon Oakridge later this week.

Tigers sign Kahnle and Flaherty, trade Faedo to the Rays

The Detroit Tigers have been busy this offseason, as general manager Scott Harris has made several moves over the past month.

Most recently, Detroit announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Jack Flaherty to a two-year, $35 million dollar deal. Flaherty made 18 starts for the Tigers last season before he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers before the trade deadline. Flaherty recorded a 2.95 E.R.A, 133 strikeouts, and an opposing .211 batting average in over 106 innings pitched last season.

The Tigers also signed veteran right-handed reliever Tommy Kahnle to a one-year, $7.75 million contract. As a Yankee in 2024, Kahnle threw just over 42 innings pitched and owned a 2.11 E.R.A. In his 50 games played, the left-hander only allowed 16 runs on 30 hits and struck out 46 batters. Kahnle has been with the Yankees since 2017 with the exception 2022, where he played with the Dodgers.

In response to the Kahnle signing, The Tigers traded right-handed pitcher Alex Faedo to Tampa Bay for catcher Enderson Delgado and cash considerations. Faedo spent three years in Detroit prior to the transaction, registering 57 innings in 2024 with a 3.61 E.R.A. and a .233 opposing batting average. Delgado, who played with the Single-A affiliate Charleston RiverDogs last season, had 235 plate appearances with a .255 average, .382 on-base percentage, and 21 runs batted in.

Moolenaar introduces bill to empower Michigan parents and keep school control at local level

In honor of National School Choice Week, Congressman John Moolenaar reintroduced the “Academic Partnerships Lead Us to Success (A-PLUS) Act” on Friday, Jan. 31. This bill aims to keep education tax dollars in the hands of Michigan parents, teachers and local leaders. The legislation has also been introduced by Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) in the United States Senate.

“State and local governments know their students’ needs better than Washington bureaucrats and have a primary responsibility for education. The A-PLUS Act sends money back to the states, so state and local governments can address their educational needs as they see fit. This legislation cuts burdensome red-tape and moves funding closer to parents and students,” said Moolenaar.

“Bureaucrats in Washington don’t know Montana students like Montana parents and teachers do,” said Daines. “That’s why our education tax dollars should be spent by Montanans on Montanans. The future is brighter when our students are receiving high quality local education from the ones who know their individual needs.”

Moolenaar's legislation has been cosponsored by Congressmen Chuck Edwards (R-NC), Mark Green (R-TN), and Brett Guthrie (R-KY). The text of the A-PLUS Act can be found (here).

Big Rapids dominates in Friday Night victory at Tri County

Following an early week loss at Traverse City St. Francis, Big Rapids bounced back with a massive win at Tri County 77-48 on Friday night.

The Cardinals wasted no time getting out in front, using some early three-point shots against the Viking zone defense to lead 23-6 after the first quarter. Tri County would respond with some made shots in the second quarter, slowing down the Cardinal offense to only 11 points and get the deficit to 34-24 at the half.

Big Rapids would start slow offensively in the third, giving the Vikings some early buckets; however, Big Rapids would use a full court press to force six straight Tri County turnovers and extend the lead to 20 after three quarters. Reserves would finish out the game for the final four minutes, sealing the Cardinals’ sixth conference win of the year.

Liam McLaughlin led the Cardinals with a season-high 18 points, followed by Ty Gielczyk with 13, Cole Haist with 12, and Gabe Njenga with 10. Haist and Njenga unofficially added five assists a piece, while Njenga and Gielczyk combined for over 17 rebounds.

Connor Henry paced the Vikings with an estimated 11 points, followed by Jason Guerra with 9. Preston Pifer added five rebounds.

Big Rapids moves to 11-4 on the season and 6-1 in conference action with the win. They will face West Michigan powerhouse Whitehall on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Tri County drops to 4-13 with their win over White Cloud on Saturday. They will face Newaygo at home on Friday, Feb. 7.

Number of Michigan cable providers, subscribers continues to decline in 2024

The number of operators of video and cable television in Michigan decreased by 2 to 29 in 2024, as well as the number of subscribers to the services continued a long-term decline.

These numbers come from the Michigan Public Service Commission’s annual Status of Competition for Video Services report released on Jan. 30.

Providers reported 1,100,636 video and cable customers in Michigan in 2024, a decline of 186,874. This is the third consecutive year of drops after a one-time bump in subscriptions during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.

Outside of 2021, the number of subscribers has been on a steady decline since a peak of 2.3 million subscribers in 2015, reflecting a nationwide trend as customers switch from video and cable services to internet streaming services.

Meanwhile, the number of franchise agreements between video and cable providers and municipalities increased to 2,274 in 2024, up from 2,206 in 2023.

The MPSC bases its video and cable report on responses by providers to an annual MPSC survey. The report, now in its 17th year, is submitted by Feb. 1 each year to the Governor and Legislature. The report does not include satellite TV providers, which do not fall under the jurisdiction of the Uniform Video Services Local Franchise Act.

Seven of the 29 video and cable TV providers who responded to the MPSC’s voluntary survey reported investing more than $1.7 million into the Michigan video and cable market in 2024.

The MPSC works to resolve disputes between customers, municipalities and video and cable television service providers. The MPSC received 808 customer complaints in 2024, a 63% decrease from 2,183 customer complaints in 2023. The most common complaint involved cable line issues, followed by billing charges and internet service problems.

A complaint form is available at the MPSC’s Video/Cable webpage, which also lists contact information for service providers in Michigan and consumer tips.

The video and cable report is based on franchise entities and video and cable television providers who responded to the MPSC survey, and other information collected by the MPSC.

The report makes several recommendations to the Legislature:

  • Moving the due date of the annual report to Mar. 1 to allow respondents additional time to provide timely and accurate year-end information.
  • Requiring video and cable providers to submit additional information to ensure the MPSC has accurate contact information for purposes of handling complaints and gathering information and data pursuant to the Uniform Video Services Local Franchise Act.
  • Requiring providers that change company names, go out of business or merge with another company to provide notification to the MPSC.

Cardinals' Foster commits to Ferris State Football

Following an outstanding high school football career, standout tailback Garret Foster has announced that his playing days in Big Rapids aren’t over yet.

Foster announced his commitment to Ferris State on Friday, joining the Bulldogs this coming fall following their 2024 National Championship.

“It feels amazing,” Foster said. “(Big Rapids) has always felt like home to me and it’s been a dream to play football at Ferris State.”

Foster reportedly saw five different offers during the recruitment process, including fellow DII program Michigan Tech, DIII powers Hope and Alma, and Lawrence Tech. For Foster, the dream school was always number one on the list.

“They have the best coaches, the best culture, and they’re winning football games,” Foster said. “That’s exactly what I wanted. Once I was presented the opportunity, I couldn’t say no.”

Foster received All-Region and All-Conference honors this year, racking almost 1400 all-purpose yards and 22 touchdowns. Defensively, he recorded 68 tackles and forced six turnovers. While he finished his high school career with many individual awards, it was the district championship in 2023 and the two conference titles that meant more.

“I would say I’m happy with my high school career,” Foster said. “Individual accolades don’t really matter to me. I wanted to develop the program and continue to win football games, that’s all that mattered.”

According to Foster, Ferris State has shown interest in him playing offensively as slot back. The Bulldogs enter the 2025 season after capturing a conference, regional, and national title this past season.

National Signing Day is next week.
