Darryl Dee McCallum, 78, of Big Rapids

Darryl Dee McCallum, beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and teacher passed away at the age of 78 on September 20, 2024 after a courageous journey with Parkinson’s Disease and Dementia. Born on April 24, 1946 in Big Rapids, Michigan to Harland (Hardy) and Bernice (Ginger) McCallum, Darryl was raised to love nature, Polish food, hunting, fishing and farming. At the age of 15, his father died and he and his siblings carried on with their family dairy farm alongside their mother who taught school full time in Barryton. Darryl’s tremendous work ethic allowed him to manage balancing the demands of farming and pursuing education due to his notable determination and love of learning. He graduated from Barryton Rural Agricultural School in 1964 and continued on to Central Michigan University where he earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education. In 1968, Darryl married his high school sweetheart Carla (Dague) McCallum. The couple purchased land and established their own beef farm while also dedicating their time to their teaching careers. Over the years they delivered hundreds of calves and cared for many other animals who were regarded as pets, including goats, sheep, pigs, horses, rabbits, and turkeys. Despite their busy schedules, Darryl and Carla loved traveling, cherishing countless memories of their trips together that ranged from backpacking in the mountains to hunting trips in Montana and even boating in the Cayman Islands. Darryl was a devoted husband who faithfully purchased Carla one special rose each Valentine’s Day.

Darryl’s family meant everything to him as he was nurturing and protective. He loved his daughter Leigha deeply and shared his favorite things with her, starting with feeding her ice cream when she was just three days old. Together they enjoyed many adventures, including hunting, ice fishing, white water rafting, night hiking, riding ferris wheels, training 4-H animals, and working together in the hayfields. Darryl welcomed his son-in-law Justin into the family and cherished time with him cutting wood and tackling home improvement projects. His most cherished role, however, emerged when he was promoted to Grandpa. From the moment his grandson Miles was born, the two were inseparable and their similarities uncanny. He was blessed with a second grandson Graham three years later, and he went above and beyond to create adventures and spend time with his boys. In summertime, together with Carla, Darryl took the boys fishing and on countless rides on his side by side. Wintertime meant playing “fox and geese” in the snow followed by hot chocolate. He loved to take Miles and Graham out for breakfast, share large boxes of fruit from his favorite farmers’ markets, sample wild apples around the farm, offer pocketfuls of pink wintergreen candies, buy toy tractors, trains, and tools, and he religiously kept their wardrobes well stocked with gloves, orange hats, and rubber boots.

Employed by Evart Public Schools for his entire teaching career, Darryl taught a wide variety of subjects, including industrial arts, small engines, drafting, math, and English. Frequently when seeing former students in the community, they would share that “Mr. McCallum” was highly respected and much loved by his students for his sense of kindness, consistently high expectations, deadpan humor, and entertaining sayings that accompanied his exceptionally large vocabulary. Darryl developed numerous strong friendships with his fellow teachers and community members as they met regularly for coffee at Jerry’s in Evart well into their 70s.

To know Darryl was to catch the twinkle in his eye and the warmth of his smile. Darryl cared deeply for children and children were drawn to him. Throughout his life he displayed an unwavering curiosity about the world as he always asked questions and was interested in getting to know others. He had a presence that commanded respect as he was incredibly driven, decisive, strong, and stubborn yet soft spoken and patient. Whatever the task, from fixing tractors, cutting wood, or home projects Darryl was always there to help solve any problem with his keen mechanical mind. He was honest, practical, straightforward, and full of integrity. Darryl’s hospitality is best described as a “food pusher,” for a visit with him meant that he would insist on grilling the biggest homegrown steak, creating a massive plate of nachos, serving extra helpings of ice cream, or frying unbelievable quantities of his famous breakfast fritters. Darryl loved to laugh and shared his humor often with others whether it was in the form of funny comments or more elaborate practical jokes. In his free time, Darryl was an avid outdoorsman as he loved to hunt and fish, which took him on many wonderful trips with friends and family. On warm summer days you could find him riding his motorcycle.

Remaining to cherish his memory are beloved wife of 56 years, Carla McCallum; daughter, Leigha (Justin) Compson; grandsons, Miles and Graham Compson; sister, Marcia (Mike) Ulrich; first cousin and dear friend, George Corwin; special cousin, Lori (Mark) Wilson; and many dear nieces and nephews. Preceding Darryl in death are mother, Bernice (Palarski) McCallum; father, Harland C. McCallum; brother, Harland L. McCallum; and special uncle, William McCallum.

The family extends much love and gratitude to our friends and family who supported Darryl and family throughout the Parkinson’s and Dementia journey, including cousin George Corwin, sister-in-law Ruth Jackson, and devoted friend Richard "Dick" Coon. We also thank the Big Rapids Fields Assisted Living and Memory Care and the many outstanding caregivers along with the wonderful staff of Heartland Hospice of Fremont, especially registered nurse Logan Merrick. To honor Darryl’s wishes, no memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to Angels of Action in Big Rapids (www.angelsofaction.org) or planting a tree in his honor.

Memories can be shared online at the Corey Funeral Home, Evart, MI, website: www.coreyfuneralhome.com, where cremation took place.

Colleen "CoCo" Hertha Marasus, 87, of Lakeview

CoCo Marasus was born in Norfolk, Nebraska on March 10, 1937, to Karl and Elsbeth Firnhaber. She was born and raised within a deeply rooted Lutheran family with her father as her teacher in a one room Lutheran grade school. After moving to Vandalia, Illinois, she graduated from Vandalia High School in 1954 and then moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana to attend Nurses Training at the Lutheran Hospital for about two years.

In 1955, CoCo moved to Detroit with her best friend. She worked as a receptionist at the Goebel Brewing Company and was an assistant for an ophthalmologist for two years. She met David (Dave) Marasus at a Walther League bowling event in 1956, and shortly thereafter, they started dating. After two years of dating, they were married at Outer Drive Lutheran Church in Detroit, Michigan, on August 16, 1958.

CoCo and Dave began their family in 1960 with the birth of their first daughter, Jody Corbett. Six years later, another daughter, Amy Boewe, was born in 1966. And, finally, their last daughter, Kristy Pollatz, was born in 1971. Since then, CoCo and Dave have been blessed with three sons-in-law: Patrick Corbett, Craig Boewe, and Paul Pollatz; eight grandchildren: Taylor (Brent) Buchholz, Lindsey (Lewis) Corbett, Kevin (Victoria) Corbett, Miriam Boewe, Michael (fiancé Alison) Boewe, Meghan Corbett, Jonah Pollatz, and Rebecca Corbett; and three great-grandchildren: Elsbeth Buchholz, Natalie Buchholz, and Charles Buchholz. Family has always been a solid anchor and a deeply-rooted love for CoCo!

CoCo has always been an active member of her Lutheran church, by being a first-rate Alto in Dave’s many church choirs, belonging to the Women’s Guild, volunteering in the Garden Club, volunteering at Vacation Bible School, providing treats after church services, helping with apple pie fundraisers, throwing fantastic church choir parties, and most importantly, being Dave’s side-kick at church.

While she was mostly a home-maker, she spent many years as the “hostess with the mostest” at McDonald’s. She loved greeting customers, flashing her contagious smile, and being the cashier that everyone wanted to meet. Her love for people made working at McDonald’s a perfect fit.

If you knew CoCo, you knew her to be a bright spark wherever she went. Her quick wit, her charming smile, and the sparkle in her eye were often the first things you noticed about CoCo. She loved chatting with people and was often known as a “social butterfly” as she flitted from one conversation to another. She loved to be at and throw parties, and she certainly did just that! CoCo would always ask questions of others and could start a conversation with anyone. You could count on CoCo to remember special dates as she was the consummate card-giver and always included a unique, hand-written note. She was beyond generous with her beloved family whom she loved so very much, as well.

CoCo passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by her parents (Karl and Elsbeth), four brothers (Arnie, Stu, Hub, and Norb), one sister (Evey), and her son-in-law (Craig).

CoCo will be dearly missed by her loving husband, Dave; her daughters, sons-in-laws, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews. Though she battled with dementia the last couple of years of her earthly life, she is now fully restored in the arms of Jesus her Savior.
Music and singing were woven into her very being. We know that CoCo is with the angels singing her favorite hymn, “I Know That My Redeemer Lives”, which gave her assurance of God’s promise to prepare a heavenly home for her without dementia or death, but with full restoration:

“He lives and grants me daily breath;
He lives and I shall conquer death;
He lives my mansion to prepare;
He lives to bring me safely there.” (v.7)

CoCo’s Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 10:00 am with her Memorial Service following at 11:00 am at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lakeview, MI.

She was a busy young girl loving dolls, involved in Girl Scouts until adulthood, piano lessons, collecting pink glassware, putting puzzles together, crafts and sewing. As she grew up it was evident her love for music and of course, after retirement, quilting.
After graduating from Montabella High School with the class of 1977 she continued her education at Ferris then completed her bachelor’s degree in education at Central Michigan University. Teaching took her to Del Rio Texas and Palo Michigan before she returned to her home base Montabella. While at Montabella she continued her education earning her master’s degree from Michigan State University in 1992. Her 32 years of teaching was a proud accomplishment.
While at Montabella her life changed. First colleagues, then friends and lastly family when she married Ivan Renne on June 28, 1997. There was no prouder mother than Patty, raising her loving sons, Biologist Weston David, Chemist Mason Donald and Lance Corporal Camron Rex, USMC, with the love of her life Ivan. She was so very proud of her sons and their accomplishments too.
Her love of music led her to join the Music Ministry at St. Michael Catholic Church in Remus, cantering for masses, raising her beautiful voice for weddings and funerals. She even worked in the parish office for a short time to continue her service to her church.
In 1997 she was introduced to the Sweet Adelines and instantly fell in love with 4 part women's harmony leading her to join the Heart of Michigan chorus. After taking a short break as her family grew and grew up, she rejoined in 2018 and shared her talents both in chorus and quartet singing.
Her parents instilled the importance of Community service leading her to serve on the Rolland Township Election board, the sesquicentennial committee, countless school functions both when the boys were in school and after they graduated and volunteering for any hometown activities when called upon. She was an active member of the Blanchard American Legion Auxiliary for 46 years
Patty is survived by her loving husband of 27 years Ivan, her sons, Weston, Mason and Camron. Brother Steven (Pam) Foster, Sister-in-law Marcia Foster and her sister Cathy Foster.
