James R. Walls, 82

James R. Walls, a longtime resident of Hartford, Michigan, more recently of Big Rapids, Michigan, and a winter resident of Crystal River, Florida, was called home to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, passing peacefully at home surrounded by family on February 18, 2026, after a valiant and grace-filled battle with glioblastoma. He was 82 years old.

James believed deeply in uniting his suffering with that of Christ, who suffered and died on the cross for humankind. He understood suffering not as defeat, but as a sacred path drawing us closer to God and to one another, an occasion for love. His life bore witness to this belief, especially in his final months, as he endured his illness with courage, faith, and strength.

Born on August 19, 1943, in Saginaw, Michigan, James was one of four children born to Anne (Napora) and Frank Walls. He was raised in Saginaw alongside his siblings, graduating from St. Mary’s High School in 1961, where he excelled in athletics, participating in football and basketball.

Following high school, James answered the call to serve his country, guided by a strong sense of patriotism and duty. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Military Police. When called upon, he volunteered to become a door gunner on a helicopter flying missions in the Republic of Vietnam starting in the fall of 1963 through the summer of 1964. He took part in many combat operations, including the Battle of Kien Long. For his courage and dedication, he received several military honors and citations including the Air Medal with 7 Oak Leaf Clusters. That service left a lasting impact, and he often spoke of comrades whose names appear on the first panel of the Vietnam War Memorial, men he proudly served alongside and never forgot.

Upon returning home, James proposed to the love of his life, Marguerite “Peggy” Hrinik. Together, they built a family and a life rooted deeply in faith and love, raising seven exceptional children.

Upon leaving the Army, James continued his life of service in law enforcement, both as a Saginaw County Sheriff Deputy and Ferris State University Campus Police Officer. James changed careers but still continued his life of service through education. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Ferris State University and a master’s degree in counseling from Central Michigan University. He dedicated more than three decades to teaching mathematics, coaching, driver’s education instruction and serving as a high school guidance counselor. His commitment to students extended far beyond the classroom, as he became a trusted mentor and friend to many, a legacy that continues through the countless lives he shaped.

James’s service extended deeply into his community life. He was honored as Hartford Citizen of the Year and Tri-Cities Father of the Year, recognitions that reflected his selfless spirit. A devoted member of Lions Club International, he served twice terms as District Governor and in numerous local, district, and regional leadership roles. He received many awards, including the International President’s Leadership Medal for his extraordinary service and the S.A. Dodge Award. One of his passions was collecting and trading Lions Club pins, building a remarkable collection representing every U.S. state for multiple decades. He also served as the Hartford Lions Club Strawberry Run Director for 30 years and helped establish and organize the Hartford Christmas Basket Program for 28 years.

A proud Knight of Columbus, James served as Grand Knight for seven years and was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Big Rapids, where he lived out his faith through humble service. When James and Marguerite first moved to Big Rapids as young adults, he volunteered to coach the grade school sports teams at the parish school. At a time when they were just starting out and had little to give, their church community surprised them with a Christmas basket, a gesture of generosity that James and Marguerite never forgot and sought to pay forward throughout their lives.

James found joy in simple things: he was an avid runner in his younger years (even doing a one-hundred-mile solo run), working outdoors, traveling, feeding and watching wildlife at their home in Big Rapids, enjoying a good comedy, and cheering for the Detroit Lions. He was known for his sweet tooth and loved sharing a box of doughnuts with his grandchildren—moments of laughter and love that captured his joyful spirit.

Even in illness, James’s humor, faith, and gratitude never wavered. He faced each day with courage, surrounded by the love of family and friends. His life stands as a testament to faith lived fully; service given humbly, and love offered freely. His legacy endures in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know him.

James will be deeply missed by his devoted wife of sixty years, Marguerite, and by his children: J. Walls; Therese (William) Schafer; David Walls (Missy Walther); Kathleen Walls; Matthew Walls; Jeffrey (Becky) Walls; and Joseph Walls. He leaves behind beloved grandchildren: Luke, Ella, and Nicholas Schafer; Riley and Mia Walther; Delmar James; Daphne Walls; along with extended family including R. Taylor; Matthew Taylor; his nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

A man whose life’s work was to help others, Bob was a loyal friend who made those around him feel fortunate to have shared conversations, meals, campfires, and nature’s wonders in his company. He could think of a song to match any conversation and found beauty in all living creatures. Nearly every sentence was punctuated by his familiar light chuckle, and he was quick with a sincere compliment.

From backpacking across the Continental Divide in Montana to a life-changing journey through Alaska’s Brooks Range by foot and canoe, Bob cherished time in the wild with friends. He explored Isle Royale and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, remote stretches of Ontario, Maine, New Hampshire, and the Adirondacks in New York. Evenings spent with friends beside a campfire, quoting movie lines and sharing stories, were among his greatest joys.

Gregory Alan Brisboy, 59

Gregory Alan Brisboy, age 59, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 8, leaving behind a family who loved him deeply.

Greg was a Master Plasterer with OPCMIA Local 514, proudly serving for nearly 30 years. He was widely respected for his exceptional craftsmanship and dedication to the trade. His work spanned both large and small-scale projects, including historical restoration at the Michigan State Capitol, Michigan State University, the Port Austin Lighthouse, and the Utah State Capitol.

Greg was a devoted family man and lifelong lover of music. Growing up in a close-knit family, he carried that sense of connection into every part of his life. He will forever be remembered for his great sense of humor, quick wit, unforgettable personality, and (depending on who you ask) his questionable singing voice. He had a natural gift for conversation and could strike up a chat with absolutely anyone, whether a lifelong friend or a stranger he had just met. His laughter, stories, and warmth made people feel instantly at ease, and he had a way of brightening every room he entered.

Greg belonged to a big, loving family who will miss him more than words can express. His presence and humor were a constant source of comfort and joy. Greg’s memory will live on in the stories we will be telling loudly, repeatedly, and probably with a few details added for dramatic effect – just the way he liked it.

Greg is survived his children, Chelsea, Jesse, and Jamey; his parents, Ruth and Thad; his siblings, Thad, Justin, Laura (Corey) Yuncker, Jennifer (Bob) Powell, and Janelle (Aaron) Curcio; multiple adoring nieces and nephews (who are convinced they were his favorites); and his fiancée, Capri McDuffie.

A celebration of Greg’s life will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, beginning at 2:00 PM in Vestaburg, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses with Elder Danny Hernandez officiating. Care and arrangements have been entrusted to Janowicz Family Funeral Home of Edmore.

Born to Darwin and Mary (Stuivenga) Dodd on November 25, 1960 in Napoleon, Ohio, she leaves behind a legacy of love for her family and the simple joys of life.

Debra was a person who truly loved nature and found peace in the outdoors. The only thing she loved more than spending time in nature was the time she spent with family. She was known as the person everyone could count on—a loyal friend and a cornerstone for those she loved. She could crochet like nobody's business and she loved to make mittens and hats for the littles in her life. Debra didn’t hesitate to volunteer her green thumb to try to help those who weren't as successful in their gardens. Debra was always the first to help others whenever there was a need.

She had a vibrant, playful personality and was often found modeling hats at Walmart to bring a smile to those around her. Debra had a special passion for all things unicorn—a fitting symbol for her unique and magical presence in the lives of her family. Whether she was mud bogging, attending a Hunks ™ show, or spending Friday nights at the bowling alley, she embraced life with a fun-loving heart.

Debra was preceded in death by: her mother, Mary (Harold) Reedy; father, Darwin (Norma) Dodd; two sisters, Ruth Biller and Carol Weeks; nieces, Nicole Dodd and Chasity Lauman and her beloved dog, Dutchess.

Her memory will be cherished by those she leaves behind, including siblings; Pat Beemer, Mary Lauman, Robert Dodd, and Cindy Dodd numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and a wide circle of friends who will miss her deeply. Her loyal companion, Dozer, also survives her.

Debra will be remembered for her work ethic and her kindness. She lived her life with passion and leaves the world a little brighter for having been in it.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests that memorial contributions be made to assist with final expenses during this difficult time.

Cremation and care have been entrusted to Corey Funeral Home. Services will be announced at a later date.

He wrote his own obituary before his death:

Ronald R Long was my American name. I came to this country at 3 years old from Norway. I was raised in a world filled with hate and strived to defend those that could not. I took great pride in my activism. I am survived by my wife of 47 years, Janice (Bahr) Long, daughter Vanessa, son Morgan, grand daughter Serena, step grand daughters Natalie, Layla and great grand son Mateo. I was preceded in death by Raider and Midnight. My life was spent on the Betsie River fishing.

He continued his activism in recent years, joining protests in Big Rapids. He instilled his passion for equality and generous nature to his daughter. Many knew him as a hard person, drenched in sarcasm. To the ones he knew best, he was strong and had a gentle, caring man. He loved soul music, fishing, Michigan Football, animals and his family. To me, he was my hero. My father will forever live in my heart.

Robert Dennis Rushmore, 61

Robert Dennis Rushmore, age 61, of Morley, Michigan, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026, at his home in Morley.

Robert was born on March 9, 1964, at Kelsey Memorial Hospital in Lakeview, Michigan, to Dennis Lee Rushmore and Winifred Jean Rushmore (Stout). During his school years he was known as Bobby, to family and friends he was simply Bob, and at work he was Robert. He married the love of his life, Kim Elaine Rushmore (Marvel), on March 10, 1989, in Reno, Nevada, and together they shared 36 years of marriage.

A graduate of Morley Stanwood High School, Robert built a career that took him all over the country. He and Kim made the most of every Sunday on the road, exploring wherever the job had taken them. Whether it was a national park, a local tourist stop, or simply the long way around, Bob believed no Family Fun Day Sunday was complete without pulling out the gazetteer and seeing how many back roads could be taken to get to the destination. What could have been a 30 minute drive often turned into two or three hours, and that was exactly how he liked it. If there was a back road to take, Bob found it.

He met Kim while they were both working at Wolverine World Wide in 1985. Bob later worked in the bridge painting industry before joining the family business, Cross Country Pipeline, where he excelled in his trade and worked his way up through the ranks. He found his greatest comfort and pride in his role as a Foreman. Working alongside his wife and two of their three children in the industry was one of his greatest accomplishments, and having them out on the road with him was something he cherished deeply.

Bob loved his music, time with family and friends, and finding solutions to problems that usually began in his pole barn shop and ended with something clever that fixed a known issue. He was famous for hanging on to just about everything because, as he believed, there would come a day when it could be used. His hobbies and interests included tinkering in his shop, Farmall tractors, flea markets and yard sales, riding around on his golf cart, fishing, learning about history, watching western shows, and a fascination with Bigfoot. He had a soft spot for his dog, Rose, and an undeniable sweet tooth, especially for Teaberry gum, Werther’s Original candies, Snickers Almonds, Peppermint Patties, and lemon meringue pie. Bob was rarely seen without his ballcap, often with a fishing hook clipped to the brim, which also doubled as the perfect place to hold little pieces of paper like parking garage tickets waiting to be validated. He took pride in his garden, especially his morning glories and sunflowers, and was always working through a never ending list of projects. He loved auctions and collecting, and he was never one to pass up a good deal. To his grandchildren, he was Papa, the steady presence they ran to, the one who always made time, even when he was busy, and the quiet place they felt safe.

He was resourceful, stubborn but caring, and a natural problem solver. He taught his kids how to work hard, fix what is broken, and find the long way when the short way was not the point. Kim was not just his wife, she was his partner in every sense, on the road, in work, and in life. Behind his stubborn streak was a heart that deeply cared for his people.

Bob courageously battled SMARCB1 deficient lung cancer, an exceedingly rare and highly aggressive malignancy. His primary tumor was never identified, and the disease had metastasized extensively to his bones. Determined to fight, he pursued every available treatment option, including multiple rounds of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, as well as several courses of radiation. He sought second and third opinions, including care teams at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. When advised to transition to hospice care in July 2025, Bob chose to continue treatment, a decision that allowed him an additional seven months of meaningful time and memories with family and friends. He completed his final radiation treatment just one week before his passing. Throughout his journey, he faced his illness with quiet strength, resolve, and an unwavering commitment to living fully for as long as possible.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dennis Lee Rushmore, and his parents in law, Duane O. Marvel and Bonnie J. Marvel.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Kim Elaine Rushmore of Morley, Michigan; his mother, Winifred Jean Rushmore (Stout) of Amble, Michigan; his children, Bobbi Jo Bright (Johnathan) of Stewart, Mississippi, Robert D. Rushmore, Jr. (Kaytie Parker) of Stanwood, Michigan, and Brian J. Thompson of Morley, Michigan; his grandchildren, Kyra M. Grey (Tristin) of Hesperia, Mataya Orona of Zephyrhills, Florida, Joseph Orona (Alicia) of Wesley Chapel, Florida, Brooklynn, Robert “Denny” Rushmore III, Delainey, Kaylen, Kinsley, Koleson, and Walker; and his great grandchild, Ryker.

Per his wishes, services have already taken place privately with close family and friends. Those who were close to Robert and would like to reach out to the family are welcome to do so.

Arrangements are entrusted to Corey Funeral Home in Evart, Michigan. Flowers or cards may be sent to the family directly.

Rodney also had a lumber company and the Heinz Pickle Factory. Rodney was home to two grocery stores, a hardware store, a barber shop, a pool hall, as well as a gas station, garage, two churches, and a post office. Steven J. Campbell, 60

Steven J. Campbell, age 60 of Evart, passed away unexpectedly on February 2, 2026, in Sylvan Township, Osceola County, MI doing what he knew best-working and providing for his family. He leaves those closest to him surrounded by the memories of a life lived at full throttle.

Steve was born on May 24, 1965, in Big Rapids, MI to Robert and Patricia (Sherman) Campbell. After attending Evart High School, life's journey began. Often described as "hell on wheels" in his younger years, he mellowed as he got older; but never quit being a "speed demon" who believed everything needed to go at its fastest.

Steve was a true "Jack of all trades" and "MacGyver" who could fix or build anything and loved spending time tinkering in his barn. He was a hardworking man who spent his life helping others and lending a hand whenever it was needed. On the rigs he was known as “Smurf” and was quoted as being “A Michigan oilfield legend”. He was at home in the great outdoors where he could, boat, fish, hunt, and cut wood. His keen eye for spotting wildlife and ability for hunting deer was exceptional. The hunting trips to Colorado will never be the same.

On June 25, 2011, in Pentwater MI-after a 23-year engagement- with their kids standing up for them, he married JoDell Richmond. As a family man he was the “smart ass” prankster whose playfulness and infectious laugh will always be remembered. He had the loudest whistle and was his grandsons’ biggest fan. After leaving the oilfield, to spend quality time with family, he became a familiar face at AJs in Evart where he was a cook, also helping with maintenance and anything that was needed of him.

He was patriotic, enjoyed taking road trips, seldom missed a Blessing of the Bikes and left behind some key phrases such as, "You can outrun the car, but you can’t outrun the radio" and the Budweiser "Whaaatttsssupp?".

Family was his anchor. He leaves behind his wife, JoDell; two children, Dakota (Olyvia) Campbell and Cierra (Morgan) Campbell; two grandsons, Ayden and Ashtyn, to whom he was simply "Pops"—the man who couldn't tell them “no."; his mother, Patricia (Gary) Goodfellow; sisters, Lynette (Kevin) Walters and Jennifer Campbell; mother-in-law, Ruth Ann Gill; brothers-in-law Joe, James and Justin (Dianna) Gill; sister-in-law, Chellie Stewart; and many nieces, nephews, aunt, uncles, extended family and tons of friends.

Sandra Bernice Eschenweck, 63

Sandra Bernice Eschenweck, 63, of Evart, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2026. Sandra was the heart of her home, a woman whose deep love for her family was her greatest life’s work and her proudest achievement.

Born in Berkeley, Illinois, on March 17, 1962, to Carl and Rhea (Clark) Huey, Sandra moved to Michigan with her parents when she was 16 years old. Not long after, in 1980, she met Donald, beginning a beautiful 45-year journey together. They were married in Reed City in 1984 and built a life rooted in Evart. In 1986, their family became complete with the birth of their daughter, Hope.

Sandra was fiercely dedicated to her family. It was her primary focus and her greatest joy, they often joked that keeping everyone in line was a full-time job. Her home was filled with her creative spirit; she had a lifelong passion for crafting and painting. The way her eyes would light up when she was working on something special is a memory. Her laughter was a gift and she found her greatest joy in being surrounded by family.

She embraced life fully, savoring every moment. She loved traveling with Don, whether they were camping, fishing, sightseeing, or simply gathered around a table playing cards and board games. She believed deeply in core values, in togetherness, and in the kind of quality family time that becomes the foundation of a lifetime. She was so much more than a wife and mother — she was a true friend, a steady shoulder to lean on, and the rock our family depended on. She taught countless lessons, and it feels as though she still had so much more wisdom left to share. Mom was our closest companion, confidant and best friend.

She was a true example of what unconditional love truly looks like and what it means to be a genuine friend. Her absence will be felt by everyone who knew her. The bond she shared with her one and only granddaughter was something rare and beautiful — the two of them were inseparable, thick as thieves.

She was preceded in death by; her parents and many uncles and aunts and other family members.

Those who will miss her most and carry on her legacy are; husband, Don; beloved daughter, Hope (Eric) Sandelius; adored granddaughter, Sarah Sandelius, all of Evart; sister, Peggy (Randy) Peters of Big Rapids; brother, Brian (Tammy) Huey of Florida.

A celebration of life is being planned for a later date and information will be updated as it becomes available.

Those closest to her will forever cherish the memories they made together. Upholding her values by carrying her spirit with them, passing on the warmth, kindness, and love she gave so freely. Dorothy Marie Burch, beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on February 22, 1936, in Heron Lake, Minnesota, to Glenn and Agnes (Sieve) Buckeye, Dorothy was the eldest of seven children. She cherished her family deeply and looked forward each year to visiting her siblings, who held a special place in her heart.

Dorothy met her husband, Edward Stuart Burch, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on a blind date. Six months later, on January 19, 1963, they married and began a beautiful life together. Their devotion to each other continued for decades, raising seven children: Mark (Maria) Burch, Theodore (Alison) Burch, Joseph (Deana) Burch, Thomas (Ann) Burch, Jeanne (Andy) Cook, Margaret (Jason) Bomia, and Charles (Diana) Burch. Dorothy took tremendous joy in her growing family, which today includes 26 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy and Ed settled in Big Rapids, Michigan, where they grew their family and faith community. A lifelong Catholic, Dorothy was a dedicated parishioner of St. Mary Catholic Church. She often said she “was born to be Catholic” and lived that truth every day—reciting her daily Rosary, volunteering through the PCCW, and serving on numerous church committees. Her favorite reminders to others were, “Your reward will be in heaven,” and “God will not be outdone in generosity.”

Dorothy began her 55-year career as an RN in 1956 after graduating from the St. Cloud Hospital School of Nursing in St. Cloud, MN. After moving to Big Rapids in 1967, her career included stints at Big Rapids Hospital, Stanwood Hospital, and Intersect (formerly Metron/Green Ridge) Nursing Home. Her compassion, faith, and warmth touched countless lives both inside and outside her work.

Dorothy’s spirit shone through her many hobbies—reading, crocheting, solving crossword puzzles, gardening, quilting, and reciting poetry. Her love of literature, artistry, and faith were gifts she passed to her children and grandchildren. She also found joy in giving back to her community as a Cub Scout den leader, library and school volunteer, and active participant in local civic committees and investment clubs.

She and Ed shared a love of travel, exploring the country to visit family and friends. They enjoyed memorable adventures throughout Alaska, the American west, Myrtle Beach, and Prince Edward Island. Dorothy also traveled to Europe, and each summer included a trip back to the family farm in Minnesota.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward; her sister, Barbara Chepa; and her brother, Ronald Buckeye. She will be remembered for her strength, grace, humor, and unwavering faith. Her example continues to light the way for all whose lives she touched.

The family would like to thank the Evergreen Terrace staff for their compassionate and loving care of Dorothy while she was a resident there.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Big Rapids, with Father Jegar Fickel as celebrant.

Dorothy’s family will greet friends on Monday, January 26, from 4-6 p.m., at the church, and again on Tuesday beginning at 10:00am. The Muskegon Area Nurse Honor Guard will conduct a brief service at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, followed by a Rosary at 6:15 p.m. Rite of Committal will take place at Mount Carmel Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Catholic School, 927 Marion Ave, Big Rapids MI 49307. Care and arrangements are entrusted to Mohnke Janowicz Funeral Home in Big Rapids.

Elizabeth Jean Baxter, 74

Elizabeth Jean Baxter, lovingly known as “Bets” age 74, of Weidman, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the Toni & Trish Hospice House in Auburn, Michigan. A lifelong resident of Weidman, Bets was born on October 3, 1951, to Raymond and Virginia (Bartlett) Baxter.

She was a proud graduate of Chippewa Hills High School, Class of 1969. She spent many years as an inventory specialist for RGIS. If you were fortunate enough to travel across Michigan at all hours of the day and night to help her complete an inventory job, you were one of the lucky ones. The laughter, stories and unforgettable memories from that job live on in many of us who knew her. She later went on to work at the Weidman Post Office, another job she truly loved.

Bets found beauty in the simple things: she loved fishing, playing her favorite card game, shangra-la, she had a deep appreciation for music, especially anything by Reba McEntire or Barbara Mandrell, she even played the guitar, and loved singing "Puff the Magic Dragon" with her nieces and nephews. Many of her friends and family will remember her annual garage sales. She loved meeting new people and chit-chatting with "the regulars” all summer long. Above all, she was a devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers, never missing a game and cheering them on faithfully to the very end.

Bets never had children of her own, but anyone who knew her knew she loved her nieces and nephews as if they were her own. She was the fun aunt. The favorite. She had a way of making you feel seen, loved and completely accepted—exactly as you were. Her love was generous, and she gave it freely. She taught us the family isn’t defined by marriage or children-it’s defined by love. And she loved us deeply. She shared a rare and beautiful bond with her firstborn nephew, Kurt. They lived together for years; they looked after one another and shared a deep friendship. Their relationship was unbreakable, and they were truly best buddies until the end.

Bets is survived by her two sisters, Barbara Tilmann and MaryEllen (Dale) Simons, both of Weidman. Her cherished nieces and nephews, Kurt Tilmann of Weidman, Laura (Chip) Whaley of Big Rapids, Suzanne (Kevin) Lipar of Livonia, Jodi (Steve) Clark of Remus, Danny (Heather) Baxter of Milford, David (Michele) Baxter of Farwell, Amy Simons of Mt. Pleasant, Chad (Steffanie) Simons of Weidman, her lifelong friend, Shelia Williams, who shared a lifetime of memories, laughter and unwavering friendship with Bets. Her many great-nieces and nephews, Zachary, Natalie, Brady, Mallory, Benjamin, Brittni, Alivia, Garrett, Riley, Meghan, Nicholas, Emilyn and Lucas. And Lastly, her loyal companion and beloved dog, Bailey. Bets is preceded in death by her parents, her brother William Baxter, and her brother-in-law Russell Tilmann.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to Scott Monroe for his unwavering kindness to both Bets and Kurt. Special thanks to McLaren Hospice and the Toni & Trish Hospice House for the exceptional and peaceful care provided during her final journey.

In honoring Bets’ wishes, cremation has taken place and a private celebration of life will be held this summer. Memorial contributions in memory of Bets may be suggested to the Toni & Trish House. Condolences may also be shared on the Baxter family page at Daggett Funeral Home Barryton.
