Verna "Maxine" Rhoads, 92, of Barryton

Verna “Maxine” Rhoads was born on the family farm in Fork Twp., Mecosta County, Michigan; ½ mile north and 1 ½ miles west of Barryton, September 1, 1932. She was the fifth child born to Manual H. and Verna V. (Robinson) Rhoads. Maxine’s paternal grandparents, Nathaniel J. and Margaret E. (Kinney) Rhoads, moved to Fork Township in 1886, part of a large group of related families, who came into the area from Fulton and Williams counties, Ohio beginning in 1882. There was no town of Barryton at that time. The area was simply known as Fork.

In 1894, Dr. Frank Barry established the village of Barryton, Michigan. Maxine’s father, Manuel Harlo Rhoads, was the sixth of seven (7) children born to “Nate” and “Ella” Rhoads. Ella was an herb doctor and midwife, who delivered more than one hundred (100) babies in the Barryton area between 1886 and 1932, the final one being her granddaughter, Maxine.

Maxine attended the Barryton Agricultural School through the 8th grade, later going back to school and completing some of her high school classes. She worked at the Dairy Bar in Barryton for a time. Then, as a young woman, moved to Big Rapids to work—as did many young women of her day. At twenty-four, she had the opportunity to go to Arizona. Possessing an independent, adventurous spirit, she seized the opportunity and moved to Mesa. There she met and married Billy Pogue. They had two (2) daughters, Jean A. “Jeannie” Pogue and Melody J. Pogue. Maxine later returned to Michigan to raise her daughters and was blessed to care for her great-nephew, Timothy C. Rizor, as a son. In time, she married Leo O. Richter of Garfield Township, Clare Co., Michigan. The couple settled in his home where Maxine lived for most of the next sixty-two years. Tragically, Leo was killed in a car accident just three years into their marriage. In the late 1960’s she married Charles E. Webb. Maxine and “Chuck” had two (2) daughters, Valerie L. (Webb) Bronis and Karleen “Karla” K. (Webb) Domanski.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Richter; her parents, Manuel and Verna Rhoads; her siblings, Thelma (Waldron) Goodwin, Neoma (Rhoads) Sprague, Marion (Rhoads) Holsinger, Nathaniel “Pete” Rhoads, Manuel “Junior” Rhoads, as well as her daughter, Valerie (Webb) Bronis and her grandson, Daniel Bronis.

She is survived by her three (3) daughters, Jean A. Pogue, Melody J. Pogue, and Karleen K. (Lee) Domanski; her son, Timothy C. (Sheila) Rizor; eight (8) grandchildren, Gabriel L. (Jaime) Doherty, Katrina R. (Femi) Kolawole, Amanda M. (Glen) Succaw, Holly M. Cupp, Maxwell J. Whitmore, Ivy L. (Jacob) Cook, Nathaniel J. (Holly) Bronis and David C. Bronis; twelve (12) great-grandchildren, Joslyn, Piper, and William Doherty, Thomas Kolawole, Jaydalyn Whitmore, Matthew, Michael, Mitchell, Mason, Marley, and Milo Cupp, Rachel Castaneda Whitmore, many nieces and nephews, and her numerous “adopted” family members.

Maxine had an extraordinary capacity for love, which she poured generously into the lives of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless other young people who crossed her path. Many affectionately called her 'Mom' or 'Grandma'—a true testament to the warmth, kindness, and care she extended to all.

She loved the Lord with all her heart and gently encouraged those around her to do the same. Her greatest desire was to spend eternity in Heaven with the people she loved. Maxine was always happiest when she was serving others. She had a true servant’s heart, and her home became a refuge for many families in need over the years—offering comfort, help, and hospitality right up until her final days.

Maxine had an independent spirit and was truly ahead of her time. She took on work that was often considered 'men’s work'—fixing cars, doing repairs, building things—never afraid to get her hands dirty or figure something out on her own. Maxine was an overcomer who faced many losses and hardships with grace. She worked to thrive and to live a loving life without bitterness. She had a way of seeing the best in people and always tried to encourage those around her. Her strength was quiet but steady, and her love showed up in her words and actions.

Maxine was a member of the Lighthouse Free Methodist Church and attended most of her life. She passed into the presence of Jesus in the early morning hours of Thursday, March 20, 2025. She was 92 years old.

As a child, Maxine’s best friend was her dog, Buster, who would meet her at the mailbox every day when she got off the school bus. He was her constant companion, no matter where she went or what she was doing. She credited him with saving her life on more than one occasion. She had three favorite activities as a child and teenager:

(1) Climbing the huge Maple tree in the front yard, all the way to the top, which would bring her mom out of the house to say, “Mac, get down out of that tree.” She always obeyed, but before long she was up in the top of the tree, again. When asked, “Didn’t you get in trouble?” she would laugh and say, “Mom never said not to climb it again.”

(2) Riding the farm horses; Doll, May, and Bill. Her dad always said she ruined them for plowing because they always wanted to run after Maxine had been riding them. She loved the excitement of running them, as fast as they could go, up and down the “lane” that ran across their farm to the next road over.

(3) Reading (at times all night long if it was an especially good book). This was a lifelong favorite activity. When she was young it was mostly westerns, which led to her love of the West and her eventual move to Arizona at the age of 24. She attributed her love of the West to Zane Grey, her favorite western author. Later in life she liked to read, primarily, “Christian” romance and adventure. Occasional Zane Grey books were still thrown into the mix.

As a teenager photography became an avid interest. This continued through the years her family grew, generation after generation. She also enjoyed sewing for her family and growing a large vegetable garden each year.

As an older adult her favorite activities and hobbies were gardening (usually built around a goldfish pond), watching the birds in her “pond garden,” doing jigsaw puzzles, and, as always, reading.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025, 11:00 A.M. at Barryton Lighthouse Free Methodist Church. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 28, 2025, from 5-8:00 P.M. at Daggett Gilbert Funeral Homes, Barryton. She will be laid to rest at Brown Cemetery, Barryton. Ruth Neva Boyce, 89, of Lakeview

With sadness, we announce that Lakeview has lost one of her most beloved and accomplished daughters. After 89 exceptional years of life, Ruth Neva Boyce (nee Keilholtz) passed away peacefully at her home overlooking Tamarack Lake during the early morning hours of February 26, 2025. Ruth lived with incomparable strength and grace as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and loyal friend to all who knew her — and she will be profoundly missed.

Ruth was predeceased by her daughter, Anna; husband, Cecil; sisters, Carolyn and Barbara; and grandson, Daniel. She is survived by her daughters, Colleen, Rene, and Kelley, along with her sister, Frances. In addition, she is survived by 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Born on October 1, 1935, Ruth was the second of four daughters gifted to Francis and Goldie Keilholtz. She and her siblings were raised on their idyllic family farm in Sylvester, Michigan. Never one for homemaking with her mother and sisters, Ruth preferred to spend her time tending to the livestock in the barn and fields with her father. The bonds she created with the animals fostered a lifelong passion for nature and the great outdoors — which subsequently instilled a sense of adventure that led Ruth to travel across the globe during her lifetime, from Alaska to Africa. Her favorite places included Arizona, Anchorage (where she ran a full marathon at the age of 64), and Europe — especially her ancestral homeland of Germany. She even visited the Himalayas in 2014 to assist her daughter in establishing a study abroad program in Nepal.

As much as Ruth loved the visceral experience of life, she was also a brilliant woman who enjoyed numerous intellectual pursuits. After graduating Salutatorian of her high school class, she and her close friend, Marilyn Wanink-Anthony, moved to Lansing, Michigan to pursue their degrees from the Sparrow Nursing Program. (Although, as tiny as Ruth always was, she had to secretly put spare change in her pockets and wore impossibly high heels to meet the height and weight requirements for the program at the time.)

Following graduation, she completed her undergraduate studies at Aquinas College, majoring in Psychology. She then acquired her masters degree in Maternal Nursing from Wayne State University, rounding out her educational pursuits and beginning a lifelong commitment to nursing and education.

Throughout her career, Ruth worked as a Registered Nurse Board Instructor and Nursing Instructor at Montcalm Community College and Ferris State University. In addition, she held the position of Director of Nursing at Kelsey Memorial Hospital, where she worked for nearly a decade. Ruth also volunteered in a nursing capacity with the American Red Cross, providing medical assistance at Ground Zero in response to the 9/11 attacks and later in southern Mississippi following Hurricane Katrina.

Ruth was a woman of tremendous Christian faith and an active member of the United Church of Christ in downtown Lakeview. She also served as an integral member of the Lakeview Village Council for many years and, as a seasoned pilot herself, was instrumental in spearheading the Lakeview airport expansion. A true Renaissance woman, Ruth enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, flying and skiing — among many other pursuits. Most of all, though, Ruth celebrated life by spending time with her adoring family and vast circle of friends.

Ruth had four daughters, affectionately known to all as “The Rose Girls”. The five women bonded together throughout their lives and remained close friends as they grew older and had families of their own. In 2011, Ruth found and married her best friend, William “Cecil” Boyce. The couple moved into his home on the lake and lived out their golden years at each other’s side, hosting holidays and get-togethers and sponsoring and participating in church activities — in between trips and vacations, of course. Sadly, Cecil passed away in 2022, but Ruth’s family takes heart knowing the two are reunited in a better place.

Ruth was a pioneer, a trailblazer — a risk-taker in a conservative era, fearless and brave. Despite her diminutive size, she lived a massive life. She was equal parts career-woman and matriarch, and she lived an inspirational life of faith and love. We will miss her greatly but rest secure in the knowledge that Ruth’s spirit lives on in all of us.

Family and friends joined at the United Church of Christ for her memorial service on Saturday, March 1 at 11am.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation made in Ruth’s name to the American Red Cross or Lakeview United Church of Christ.

Marilyn Helen Hunt, 65, of Greenville

Marilyn Helen Hunt, age 65, of Greenville passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at Golden Life Assisted Living in Greenville. Mary, as she was known, was born January 31, 1960, to parents Paul and Helen Hunt. At three pounds, the newborn Mary was sent home to be raised by her aunt Beatrice and uncle Maurice with whom she thrived in the Edmore area. She attended the Special Education program at Edmore schools, which she loved. Mary participated in the Special Olympics, workshop programs, and even washed the dishes at Pizza Hut through the years. She lived a long time on her own in Stanton, leaning on her street smarts and the many compassionate people who helped her to make the most of her life.

Some of her favorite people were the Montcalm County deputies and specialists at Montcalm Area ISD. With the encouragement and support of her dear friend, Bob, Mary became a well-loved member of the Stanton Congregational Church. In truth she made many friends in Stanton over the years, so many that she could hardly go anywhere without running into someone she knew, whether it be from 40 years ago or just a couple of years back. Mary enjoyed rides around Baldwin Lake, tours of Deer Tracks Junction, being in the Danish Festival Parade, and a good ice cream cone.

Mary is survived by her half-sister Daisy Anglin; niece and nephews Steven Hunt, Kevin (Lori) Johnson, Terry Johnson, Becky (Craig) Shatruck; cousins Aneta Pendell, Richard (Crystal) Pendell, Randall Pendell; and her closest and most helpful friend, Bob Brundage, who knew her as well as anyone.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, aunt and uncle who raised her, half-brother and sisters Paul (Diane) Hunt and Bonnie (Terry) Johnson.

A time of remembrance was held for Mary on Sunday, March 2, 2025, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at Brigham Funeral Chapel in Edmore. Those wishing to express condolences are encouraged to use the guestbook at www.brighamfuneralchapel.com

His ability to connect with others and spread joy through the arts was one of his defining qualities. A lover of both education and the arts, Ric was always ready to inspire others with his knowledge, humor, and kindness.

In addition to his academic and professional accomplishments, Ric found immense joy in his personal life. Catherine Naru, 70, of Edmore

Catherine Naru, 'Cathie' to all who knew her, longtime resident of Edmore, Michigan, peacefully completed her 70-year journey on this earth on February 12, 2025, lovingly surrounded by her family and friends. A woman of strong faith, Cathie firmly believed in the promise of another life after the earthly one. With hope and peace in her heart, she looked forward to the day she would be reunited with her beloved parents. Through her love, kindness, and generous spirit, Cathie succeeded in her mission to leave the world a better place, positively impacting the lives of countless individuals in ways that will be remembered forever.

Cathie was born on February 7, 1955, at Smith Memorial Hospital in Alma, Michigan. The oldest of four children, Cathie attended Second Street Elementary School in Edmore; McBride Middle School; Blanchard Jr. High; and Montabella High School, graduating as a proud member of the Class of 1973. While at Montabella, Cathie was a member of the highly acclaimed symphonic and marching bands, where she played the flute.

After high school, Cathie attended Northern Michigan University and Montcalm Community College where she earned a Nursing degree. Nursing was the perfect profession for Cathie; her kind heart, compassion, and ability to connect with everyone she met made her a nurturing caregiver and cherished friend to all.

Cathie’s thirty-year nursing career began at the former Tri-County Community Hospital in Edmore. After moving to Tucson, Arizona, Cathie worked for twenty years at a methadone clinic, helping those less fortunate than herself navigate the challenges of addiction with compassion, dignity and respect. When she retired, Cathie moved back to Michigan to enjoy time with her lifelong friends.

Cathie inherited many of her late mother Marguerite’s talents, traits, and passions. Most notably, both shared an extraordinary ability to see the world through an artistic lens. Like her mother, Cathie was a gifted painter and craftsperson, and her artwork has graced the walls of countless homes over the years. She often used her talents to decorate special events for friends and family, as well as her church for the holidays. Both women loved birds and flowers, with Cathie’s favourite being pink roses. Additionally, they were both avid readers and shared a fondness for Arthurian legends, medieval literature, and mythology.

A kind and giving person, Cathie never hesitated to share what little she had with others who were less fortunate, be it a meal, a few dollars, or an empathetic ear. Among Cathie’s greatest qualities was her ability to accept, support and love people for who they were - no matter their background or beliefs. Cathie was also a fighter; fiercely independent, resilient, and determined to live life on her own terms; always staying true to herself.

Cathie had a unique ability to make friends wherever life took her, but she never forgot to nurture her existing friendships - some dating as far back as pre-grammar school. A natural conversationalist, she enjoyed meeting new people and visiting with friends and family. She also took great pleasure in entertaining and always added her personal touch to the decorations, making every get-together feel special.

Cathie cherished her family and took great pride in sharing their accomplishments with others. She had a fabulous memory and a special gift for recalling people, places, and moments with great clarity. Cathie enjoyed traveling to New York to visit family and loved the sights and sounds of the city, including Broadway musicals and the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. These experiences were ones she could recall and revisit time and again, sharing them with her friends in vivid detail.

A lover of animals, Cathie adored the pets in her life and even named them after some of her favourite TV stars. Her Tabby cat, Xena, was named after Xena: Warrior Princess, and her beloved Yorkshire Terrier, Maks, was a tribute to Maksim Chmerkovskiy from Dancing with the Stars.

Cathie was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Edmore, the Edmore Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Phoenix, Arizona Chapter of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She was a former member of the Edmore Women’s Club and a former board member of the Nita Curtis Foundation.

Cathie is survived by her brothers Steve (Barbara) and James (Patricia), nephew Ryan, and nieces Lauren, Stephanie, Amelia, Julia, Jessie, and Marina. Also surviving are an aunt on her mother’s side, Patricia, and an uncle on her father’s side, Gilbert (Anne). She was pre-deceased by her father Robert, mother Marguerite, and sister Mary.

Cathie’s family wishes to acknowledge the team at MyMichigan Medical Center Alma for the exceptional comfort and care they provided during her final days. They also extend their gratitude to Cathie’s dear friend, Jane Anderson Beach, for her unwavering love and support, as well as to Tom and Linda Dobbrastine, Karl Kluwe, Scot Donley, and Pastor Lem and Colleen Granada Jr. for their comforting visits.

A celebration of Cathie’s life will take place later this year in her hometown of Edmore.

In memory of Cathie, donations can be made to either the Faith United Methodist Church of Edmore (833 S 1st St, Edmore, MI 48829) or Montcalm County Animal Shelter (P.O. Box 368, Stanton, MI 48888).

Marsha Jean Lewis, 75, of Hersey

Marsha Jean Lewis, age 75 of Hersey, passed away peacefully early in the morning of February 22, 2025.

She was born in Detroit on December 23, 1949, to John and Annabell Goodman, the oldest of seven children.  She grew up in the Detroit area and spent her early years working for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.  On February 24, 1978, Marsha married the love of her life Guy Lewis of Reed City and they settled in the Hersey area.

If Marsha had a specialty in anything, it would be caring.  She cared about people of whatever age and spent the rest of her life in doing so, whether it was in fostering kids, babysitting, elderly care, or any other form you can think of, she was part of it.  Her other passion besides caring for people would be her church.  Marsha was a long-standing member of the Hersey United Methodist church, and she wore many hats for the church during that time, including church secretary, lay leader, Sunday school teacher, VBS, and anything else that needed to be filled in and she was able to help, official or unofficial.  You would never know what antics she would use or depths she would go to get a message across for whatever the occasion.

Speaking of wearing hats, Marsha was also an avid member of the Reed City Red Hats Society.  Marsha loved spending time with family, whether it was fishing, taking the grandkids frogging, playing games, cousins weekends, car show weekend, holidays, birthdays, or any other excuse to get together, she was there when able.  If anything may be remembered about her, let it be her love, caring, and kindness, as that was the only way she knew how to live her life.  Marsha loved her family, loved her church and church family, and loved her friends.  She showed this in every aspect of her life and was always willing to help any of them in any way possible.

Marsha is survived by her loving husband Guy, sisters Bev, Joyce, and Bobbi, brothers Brent and Brian, son Josh (Trudy) Lewis of Leroy, grandchildren Alisha (Kyle) Curtis of Evart, Cassandra Hennigan of Spring Lake, Gabe Lewis of Paris, Caleb and Carter Lewis of Leroy, numerous nieces and nephews, and her great grandson Wilder.  She is preceded in death by her parents John and Annabell, brother Terry, and niece Kyra.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday March 1, 2025 at the Hersey United Methodist Church; located at 200 W. Second St, Hersey Mi 49639; at 1:00 P.M., with visitation starting at 11:00 A.M.  A luncheon and reception with the family will follow services.  Burial will be private.

Janet Myrtle Kiehl, 74, of Hersey

Janet Myrtle Kiehl, age 74 of Hersey, passed away peacefully at Altercare of Big Rapids on Sunday, February 9, 2025.

Marlene Louise Kelly, 84, of Evart

Marlene Louise Kelly, 84, passed away on February 20, 2025 at Reed City Fields where she has resided the last two years. Marlene was born on August 24, 1940, in Detroit, to Harold and Dorothy (Moran) Durkee. She was raised by Dorothy and Glenn Genzel and graduated from Howell High School in 1958. From there, she continued on to boot camp for the United States Navy. In 1965 she made her home in Evart where she met Clayton Eugene Kelly. They were married in Reed City on January 10, 1970 and spent their winters in Florida and summers in Evart when they could.

Marlene never stopped. She loved to bowl until her knee surgery in early 80’s. There are several stories regarding her cooking being so bad -the birds wouldn’t eat it. But, the kids never starved. Marlene retired from Ventra where she worked as an assembler for many years.

Marlene is survived by: five children, Daniel (Kimberly) Boglarsky, Terence (Karen) Boglarsky, Cheryl (Randall) Babcock, James (Sherry) Boglarsky and Dawn (Robert) Vincent; one sister, Pamela (Leon) Robinson and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
