Shirley Ann (Johnson) Hamelund, 86, of Big Rapids

Shirley Ann (Johnson) Hamelund, 86, peacefully passed away at her home in the early morning hours of June 25, 2024 while surrounded by her children.

Shirley was born on April 14, 1938 in Rockford, Illinois to Floyd and Elsie Johnson.  She married Big Rapids resident Ronald Hamelund on January 11, 1964 during a beautiful evening candlelight service in Rockford, IL while Ron was serving in the U.S. Navy.  In June 1978, upon Ron’s desire to pursue a small business venture in his hometown, Shirley settled in Big Rapids.

Known for her love of animals, Shirley had at least one cat as a pet throughout her life, but most of the time she would share her house with two, three, or at one time 5.  Neighborhood stray and feral cats also knew where they could find a dish full of food.  She avidly kept her resident wildlife fed by providing seed, suet, and corn.  Deer would frequently visit, skunk would make their way up on the deck to finish any cat food left behind, and all variety of birds would feast in her large backyard.  But Shirley will perhaps be missed most by the scurry of corn-fed squirrels that lived in her trees.  This adoration of animals led to Shirley working at the (former) Pet Hospital in Big Rapids for 18 years.

She was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for 46 years and loved her church so much that she spent the last 20+ years serving as the office assistant.  Shirley enjoyed being very active in her church, travelling, performing in local Stage-M productions and the Mecosta County Senior Center Reader’s Theater.  But most of all she enjoyed loving and spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Shirley is survived by her children Deborah (Gilbert) Flores of Paris, MI, Darrell (Becky) Hamelund of Antioch, IL, and Craig (Sherrie) Hamelund of Portland, OR; grandchildren Sarah (Gerry), Danielle (Levi), Ryan (Erika), Nathan (Shannon), Joshua, Brooke, Mollie, and Jackson; step-grandchildren Gilbert, Crystal (James), and Kim; great-grandchildren Eli, Gerry, Mason, Madisyn, Sunnie Mae, and Silas; step-great-grandchildren Kierra, Addison, Abigail, Cooper, Skylar, Ricky, Kayden, and Cole; step-great-great-grandchild Alijah; her brother David (Pam) Johnson of Rockford, IL; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her loving husband of 39 years Ronald, and brothers Ronald and Roger Johnson.

Funeral services will take place at 2 pm, on Saturday, June 29th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Shirley’s son Craig officiating.  The family will greet friends at the funeral home Friday, June 28th from 5 pm to 8 pm, and one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Morris Rogers, 72, of Sears

Morris Rogers, beloved husband to Janet, joined her in eternal rest on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at their home in Sears. Morris was 72. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, on September 24, 1951 to Perry and Dorla (Thompson) Rogers. In 1969, Morris graduated from Lincoln High School in Warren. Soon after, at his friend's open house, he met his future wife, Janet Biernacki. They were married in Warren on August 7, 1970 and they made their home in the Sterling Heights & Warren areas, where they raised their two children.

While in high school he started working at Firestone Tire and continued for 25 years. Always interested in skilled trades, Morris became a millwright with Local 1102 and was employed by Commercial Contracting Corporation for 10 years. In 2010, Janet and Morris made their cottage, in Sears, their permanent home and attended Calvary Baptist Church in Evart.

Morris’ ability to be direct and to the point when things mattered most and determination to take care of his lawn and home, despite having a disability, spoke of his internal strength. He was kind hearted. His ability to make anyone laugh, listening & singing along with his favorite artist, Lady Gaga, watching the same video performance of “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”, and keeping up with the newest dance trends for the grandchildren, spoke volumes about his personality. He never missed watching the Detroit Tigers, hosting the annual celebration with his lifelong friends or the chance to lend a helping hand when and wherever needed.

When relaxing he could be found watching Gunsmoke or a western, golfing or hunting.

We can still hear him say his many one liners, such as, “Wherever you go, there you’ll be.” There is comfort in knowing he is in God’s care and spent his last days at home with family and socializing with close friends. Remembering Morris are: his daughter, Julie and husband Jeff Cadarian of Roseville; five grandchildren, Jordan and Justin Cadarian both of Roseville, Janelle Cadarian of North Carolina, Sara Colin of Washington Township and Raven and husband, Jacob Vasileff of Newport; two great granddaughters, Brinley and Haisley; two siblings, Ricky and his wife, Sue Blaine and Lynn and her husband, Lance Wiselogle; in-laws, Roger Buxton and Carol Rogers; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and numerous friends.

Carolyn Marie Young, 80, of Webberville

Rays of sunshine warmed the beloved countryside home, a fresh breeze wisping through the hay field as Carolyn Young entered eternal life surrounded by those she loved on June 12th, 2024.

Carolyn Marie Wagner’s life began on October 3, 1943, in Webberville's small, nurturing community. Her story is a chronicle of determination and enduring love. She believed in the power of small acts of kindness, the importance of family, and the merit of a life well-lived. She was a woman of sincere empathy, always extending her hand to those in need and her wisdom to those seeking guidance. But more than her kindness, she had joy. A drive to see the world and share those experiences with others. She strived to always live life to its fullest, and as her family, we are proud to say she did.
Carolyn married her soulmate and the love of her life, Nile Young on August 13th, 1961. If you truly knew them, you would agree that no two people were more meant for each other. They perfectly represented Carolyn’s favorite song by Elvis Presley, “Can’t Help Falling in Love”. Moving to Remus, she began her next chapter in life as a business owner and wife. And what a story it became. Together, Nile and Carol built Remus Lumber Company, a business that became a well-known establishment that would continue to grow and thrive just as quickly as their family.
Carolyn’s strength and resilience were deeply displayed in the face of adversity, especially in the loss of those who preceded her in death; a daughter Becky Young, and a grandchild Greg Simon. She faced life’s challenges with an immense strength of will and unwavering faith. Her ability to remain hopeful, even in life’s toughest times, inspired all who knew her.

Carolyn was, first and foremost, a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her love for her children was the building block of her family. It was a love that was both tender and fierce, that guided, protected, and nourished. She celebrated her family's victories and stood by them through their challenges, offering insight and encouragement.

In every role she played – as a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a friend, a committed churchgoer, and a community member – she brought the same level of commitment and benevolence. Her ability to connect with people made her a cherished figure in the lives of those around her.

Carolyn’s passions and interests extended to crafts, flowers, reading, and nature. Often, you could find her sitting on her back porch, overlooking her beloved apple orchard with friends and family, laughing and sharing stories. Something she ensured she found time to do, even in her final days.
Generous. Intelligent. Clever. Stubborn. So many qualities that you could depend on and still can, as she has passed them on to those she left behind. Her husband: Nile Young. Her children: Ron and Nila Simon, Vern and Samantha Young, Keith and Nelda Young, and Nile Jr. and Emily Young. Her grandchildren: Grant and Amber Simon, Jordan and Kayla Young, Corrin Simon and Ryan Thomas, Chelsea and Wesley Kenny, Gizell and Jake Maloney, Austin Young and Emily Hamilton, and Grace Young. Her great-grandchildren: Brieanna and Nile Simon, Aeriana, Shaelyn and Mikaela Simon, Nolan and Collin Young, Wrenley, Marshall and Ruthie Kenny, and 1 great-grandchild due in December. Plus, her extended family, friends, and all those she loved deeply.

Her strength of character will live on in those she touched, blessing the world by gifting them in some small way with the memories and lessons she bestowed us with.

“Lost love is still love. It takes a different form, that’s all. You can’t see their smile or bring them food or tousle their hair or move them around a dance floor. But when those senses weaken another heightens. Memory. Memory becomes your partner. You nurture it. You hold it. You dance with it.” – Mitch Albon.

Please join us in sharing your memories and remembering the special person Carolyn Marie Young was at the funeral service on June 21st, 2024 at New Hope Church in Mecosta, MI at 2pm.

Raymond "Ray" Robert Dempz, 86, of Morley

On June 3, 2024, Raymond Robert Dempz passed away gently, in the same manner he lived his life. Born on the 4th of February to Harry and Stella Dempz in 1938, Ray grew up in the heyday of Detroit. He loved his upbringing and remained in Warren through his 30-year working career with General Motors.

Ray and his first wife had 5 children. Ray cherished spending time with his family by planning outings such as drives through Belle Isle, going to the Detroit Zoo, ice skating at night, apple picking, numerous camping trips and family picnics. For extended family and friends, Ray created and coordinated an annual Canoe Trip. It stared out with 4 families and rapidly grew to over 200 people. He continued to create memories with his grandchildren through the years.

He married Colleen Anderson in 1986, after meeting through a mutual friend. Together they merged their families and matched their mutual love of the outdoors by their avid camping, creating lifelong memories and traditions. Ray kept up with his children and activities by keeping the clocks for Warren Woods-Tower schools sports, a skill he carried with him through retirement.

Following retirement, Ray and Colleen came to Stanwood and made their home, immersing themselves in rural life. Ray quickly became the favored clock keeper for Chippewa Hills sports and mastered the art for 25 more years. He also indulged in his favorite pastime, model trains, and eagerly showed his collection to anyone who cared to inquire, his intricate rails on display. Ray had an incredible sense of humor, so dry that sometimes only the glint in his eye gave him away before his laughter became contagious. He was known far and wide for his ‘grandpa jokes’.

Never one to stay stagnant, Ray was involved in his community both at play through his frequent golfing and love of ping-pong, or the work he could volunteer for in his steadfast devotion to St. Michael’s. All in all, his love of his family and Christ shined in everything he took on. He will be dearly missed.

After her retirement from Ferris, Carol continued to contribute her skills and warmth at Lincoln Financial Group.

Beyond her professional life, Carol found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. She had a deep passion for gardening and spent countless hours tending to her flowers. An avid reader, she could often be found with a book in hand, lost in the worlds crafted by her favorite authors. Carol also loved taking leisurely rides and dining out, always appreciating the opportunity to explore and enjoy new experiences. She was a long time member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

Carol's greatest joy came from the love she shared with her family. She was deeply devoted to her husband, Rick, with whom she shared a bond of unwavering love and companionship. Her gentle spirit and warm heart made her a beloved figure among her family and friends, who will forever remember her as someone who was simply happy to be.

Carol's life was a testament to the beauty of finding joy in the everyday and cherishing the people and passions that make life meaningful. She will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Carol is survived by her husband of 24 years, Rick Pullen; sisters, Sharon (Robert) Pieciak and Gayle (Doug) Merkle; her stepchildren, Lori Krepps and Tim (Dawn) Pullen; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; her sister-in-law Chris (Roger) Kamen; brother-in-law Kim (Vicki) Pullen; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband William “Bill” Beegle.

A Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 6, 2024, at the Ladner Cemetery in Rogers Heights, with Pastor Tyson Bentz officiating. Memorial donations in her name may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

Care and arrangements are entrusted to the Mohnke Janowicz Funeral Home in Big Rapids. Share a memory or express condolences at mohnkefuneralhome.com.
