Matthew "Bubba" Stieg, 56

Matthew “Bubba” James Stieg, age 56, passed away at his home in Hersey, MI on December 28, 2025, after a courageous battle with metastatic renal cell carcinoma.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Beth Ellen (Cookingham) Stieg; two beautiful daughters Marcella Beth Stieg and Ollie Stieg; and his two daughters from his previous marriage, Ashley (Derek) Bennett and Tori Stieg; one grandson Milo Torralva; his parents James and Sharon Stieg; siblings Scott Stieg, Jason (Jennifer) Stieg (his best friend), and Kim (Thomas) Schemmel; and many nieces and nephews.

He was born on March 15, 1969, to James and Sharon (Lindsay) Stieg.  Matt graduated from Reed City High School in 1987 as its Homecoming King and Senior Athlete of the Year.  He loved playing football and basketball.

Farming was in Matt’s blood.  A little boy feeding calves to driving tractor at 10 years old.  Doing chores before school… and afterwards as well.  Matt was also best friend and loyal son to his dad, James Stieg.  Every day Jim would come to pick Matt up and he would help him with hay and all of the many repairs and projects around the farm.  Jim meant the world to him.  Their’s was a special bond that could never be broken.

Matt’s little brother Jason was also a best friend.  There wasn’t a day gone by that they weren’t together.  Ricky Langworthy was also like a brother to Matt.  Matt, Jason and Ricky were the “3 amigos”.  He would also hug them when they came over and spent time in Matt’s mancave and hugged them when they departed.  One of Matt’s greatest gifts to everyone was love.

His favorite things to do with Jason and Ricky were fishing, hunting, and golfing when he felt well enough.  They took Olivia (Ollie), Matt’s youngest daughter, fishing, both summer and winter.  Ollie and Matt had a very special bond between daddy and daughter.  These memories she will never forget.  He was present for soccer games, baseball games, and everything she did.

Matt’s relationship with Marcella (his daughter with autism) was always kind, loving, gentle, and he always taught Ollie and Marcella to stand up for what they believed in and to be proud of who they are and to live their lives the way they wanted to—not how everyone else thought that they should.  He never missed a volleyball game or a choir concert of Marcella’s.

Laughing was always one of Matt’s greatest joys.  His smile and the way he loved will never be forgotten—or the way we loved him.  Beth and Matt loved each other since High School.

In October 2025, Matt scored a huge buck.  That was the most he ever laughed, smiled, cried, and we always thanked our Lord for His blessings on our family.

Matt would hug and kiss us every morning and every night.  He’d say, “thank Jesus because tomorrow is never promised”.  He touched everyone’s heart one way or another, so please remember that life is too short to stay mad, not forgive, and live each day as if it’s your last.

God Bless You Everyone!  Matthew, you make us want to be better people.  Love you always and forever.

"Beth, Ollie, and Marcella.

I’ve loved you most of my life and always will.

Your loving wife, Beth."

Sandra Marie Norton, 66

The story of Sandra Marie Norton is truly a beautiful love story that began back in high school when she fell in love. Sandra and her high school sweetheart, Dave Norton, married on June 2, 1983, and continue to share a rare and special love that not only defined their family but also touched everyone lucky enough to witness it. They were simply each other's everything. A perfect pair who built a life filled with unwavering devotion. Whether she was watching Dave care for the garden or they were enjoying quiet moments together at home in Sears, their connection was the warm, steady beat of the Norton family. Seeing them side by side, and hand in hand, was like witnessing a genuine partnership: a bond rooted in deep respect and a love that only grew stronger with each passing year.

Even though the calendar moved on, Sandra happily stayed true to her playful spirit. With her signature quick wit and cheerful attitude, she long insisted that she had been 22 for the past 46 years. This delightful humor was her secret to staying strong; it kept her heart young and allowed her to connect easily with her students, her daughters, and her grandchildren, always with a wink and a smile. She truly was timeless, showing us that age is just a number when your soul shines as brightly as hers.

For her "three girls'—Jenny, Jill, and Jan—Sandra was more than just a mother; she was their North Star and closest friend. In their early years, she was the woman who "always found a way," tirelessly making sure her girls had everything they needed. As they matured, their relationship developed into a meaningful mentorship. Sandra believed that "love brings patience and understanding," a principle she lived by daily. She was the perfect confidante, gently guiding her daughters through life's obstacles with an open heart and unwavering support.

Sandra felt that a home was a special place meant to be shared with others. Over twenty years in Rodney and thirteen in Sears, her door was always open, welcoming friends and family alike. Her house was a lively hub because she was the warm and magnetic heart of her family. She loved it when everyone could be there together. It meant the world to her. She had a truly special gift—she could make everyone she was talking to feel like the most important person in the world. Always giving 100% to them. That’s why so many loved and respected her.

To her beloved grandchildren—Jacob, Josh, Justin, Julia, Judy, David Lee, and Bella—she was truly the best Nini and Grandma anyone could ask for. She always took the time to listen with caring attention and had a wonderful knack for knowing just what to say to make everything feel right again. When she received the special new title of Gigi, she welcomed it with such joy and pride. Her warmth and love continue to shine through today, carried on by her great-grandchildren, Danny and Ruby, who brought her immense happiness and light.

Sandra, often called a Teacher of the Soul, has lovingly dedicated over 20 years to her inspiring work with the Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District. As a passionate English and Special Education teacher, she has touched the lives of hundreds of students. She always sees the special potential in students who need a little extra support. Her teaching goes beyond academics; she generously shares her patience and kindness with those who need them most. Her classroom feels like a second home—warm, safe, and full of love and positivity.

Sandra was an enthusiastic book lover, exploring countless worlds through her reading. She adored historical fiction, but her heart truly belonged to Stephen King books. There wasn’t a single one she hadn’t read. Sandra also nurtured a warm dream of visiting Australia. Although she never made it to those distant lands, the lively world she crafted in Michigan was filled with endless joy. Her most cherished adventures were found in her family’s laughter, the captivating stories she loved, and the peaceful beauty of her life with Dave.

Sandra Marie Norton was a truly inspiring person who showed us that leading with love always lights the path forward. Even though the garden in Sears might seem a bit quieter today, the extraordinary love that Sandra and Dave shared continues to be the heartfelt rhythm of this family. It’s a beautiful reminder that two people can truly be everything to each other, now and forever.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Mary Teresa Barnes. Her beautiful life will forever be cherished by her loving family. The love of her life: David Wayne Norton, her devoted daughters, Jenny (Fred) Forbes, Jill (Brian) Derevage, and Jan (Joe) Dart; beloved grandchildren, Jacob, Josh (Dewi), Justin (Jamie), Julia, Judy (Ron), David Lee, and Bella; great-grandchildren, Danny and Ruby; her siblings, Terry (Gary), Connie Freeman, Sue (Lonnie) Ervin, and Dave Barnes; her extended family, and a multitude of nieces and nephews she loved as her own.

A life celebration is being tentatively planned for May 16th, a time when the weather is pleasant and those that need to be here can be. Until that time, please help us remember the best moments of Sandra’s life by leaving a message, stopping by for a visit or signing the tribute page online at www.coreyfuneralhome.com. Arrangements and care were entrusted to Corey Funeral Home, Evart, MI.

She was the heart of every holiday, hosting big family gatherings where contagious laughter and joyful memories were always made. A straight shooter through and through, she believed that right was right and wrong was wrong. Sandy was kind, fair, trustworthy, and someone you could always count on in times of need. She loved to joke, always kept candy nearby, and found deep joy in birdwatching, nature, and the purity of life itself.

Strong-willed and steadfast, she lived with conviction and loved deeply. Sandy enjoyed playing games like Sequence, Set Back, and Euchre and many treasured family moments were spent gathered around tables filled with laughter and competition. A loving mother and devoted wife, her love for her family showed in all she did. She worked hard and loved even harder.

They married on April 16, 1978, and shared decades of cherished memories such as time spent by the creek searching for rocks, fishing, hunting, camping, trips to the Upper Peninsula, Canada, Lake Gogebic, and Hardy Dam, as well as many memorable casino trips. Nearly everyone who knew her carries a special memory of time spent with her during these moments.

Gone Fishin’. Patrick Murphy, age 73 of Hersey, left this life onto his next grand adventure on December 12, 2025, at his home, following a short time with cancer. Pat was born on October 16, 1952 to Albert and Lois (Hagerman) Murphy. Per Pat’s wish, cremation has taken place through the Corey Funeral Home in Evart, and a bare bones obituary has been written, reminding us to be grateful for the time we have with those we love, for we never know the last.

Sally Zoyiopoulos, 92

Sally Zoyiopoulos, passed away at her home in the wintry woods on December 12, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. In accordance with her wishes, put down your phone, and pay attention. If you are reading this on your phone, do not tell Sally. Ever.

Sally’s ninety-two years were very full and impossible to condense, so here are some highlights

From a young age, Sally loved all aspects of fishing and was an expert at cleaning fish and eating fish, and she loved fishing with her son best of all, a true Mother’s Day treat. Rivaling her love of fishing was her love of dogs. She loved Irish Setters the best, one in particular, and the other the best she could. In lieu of an Irish Setter, she poured her love into Quinci, who loved Sally right back like only a good dog can.

Sally was bold like no other. She loved swimming and was part of the high school synchronized swimming team which was pretty amazing since Title IX was a long way off. She worked outside the home her entire adult life, at a time when that wasn’t mainstream. She was a fearless traveler, enjoying several excursions with friends and family out West and to Europe. In her eighties, she didn’t hesitate to agree to a 1000-mile road trip in a Volkswagen Beetle of questionable reliability.

Sally was a prolific baker, and despite her children’s best efforts, she took her official recipes with her. If you enjoyed Sally’s delicious baked goods, good luck finding a worthy replacement. She was most famous for her baklava, and she likely made thousands of pies from scratch, including the crusts. She was known for bringing baked goods to meetings, so meetings may be canceled from here on.

Sally was also a passionate fiber artist and crafter, spinning and weaving and knitting and more spinning and more knitting. She was known to travel with her like-minded friends to fiber and craft festivals, and she enjoyed expanding her skill set, even if she had misplaced her glasses beforehand.

Sally was involved in local events, so she probably asked you for a donation of some kind. She loved organizing events and contributing her talents to her community rather than sitting at home. She baked and fundraised and cold-called and cajoled to make things happen for her people in her community.

Sally is survived by her daughter Jamie, her son Jeff and his wife Laurie, her daughter Nicole and her husband Jefferson, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, her beloved sisters-in-law, a brother, as well as many much-loved nieces and nephews.

Sally’s family members would like to thank Pastor Josie, Sally’s church family, and her friends for all their support, kindness, and prayers, especially during the last years of Sally’s amazing life. The family also wants to give an extra special thanks to Jennifer who took care of us all.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you love your mom, and all your people, with all your might. For any who wish to make a contribution in Sally’s memory, please make a gift to the Evart Public Library or the library of your choice.

Cremation has taken place through the Corey Funeral Home in Evart. Services will be held when the weather is warmer, and family and friends can be together.

DeAngelo "DJ" Jenkins, 13

DeAngelo “DJ” Jenkins was born on January 1, 2012, in Big Rapids, Michigan, to Alicia Gossett and DeAngelo Jenkins. He was the second-oldest child of his parents and their first son. Although DJ lived in Detroit, he spent many summer nights and cherished moments at his grandparents’ home in Mecosta County, where he was deeply loved from the very day he was born.

From the moment DJ entered the world, he carried an energy that could light up any room. His presence was unforgettable—warm, joyful, and full of life. DJ had a way of making everyone feel welcome, greeting each person as if they were his best friend. If you knew DJ, you knew he loved to laugh, and his contagious sense of humor brought happiness to everyone around him.

DJ loved Pokémon, chocolate cake, and playing practical jokes. He always saw the bright side of life, no matter the circumstances, and faced each day with courage and optimism. One of the final laughs DJ shared with his family came when he heard a story about his younger brother Dereon calling the police because there was a spider in the kitchen. DJ threw his head back in laughter and eagerly shared another story of Dereon once calling the police to ask if they could bring him pizza. Even in his hardest moments, DJ’s laughter never left him.

DJ’s bravery throughout his battle with HLH taught everyone who knew him a lesson that will never be forgotten—that strength can outweigh fear in any situation. He faced unthinkable obstacles and complications with courage beyond his years. His medical team often spoke of the remarkable way he beat the odds time and time again, bouncing back from complications in ways they rarely witnessed. They said they were amazed—but also said they weren’t surprised—because that was DJ. He was a fighter.

In DJ’s final moments, his family sat by his side as doctors, nurses, medical assistants, social workers, and unit secretaries filled the room, many in tears, to say goodbye. It was then that his family truly saw the depth of DJ’s impact—the tangible evidence of how many lives he touched in a way that can never be duplicated.

Having the opportunity to love DJ has been one of the greatest gifts life could give, and anyone who crossed paths with him would agree. DJ will never truly die, for he will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.

DJ is survived by his loving parents, Alicia Gossett and DeAngelo Jenkins; his grandparents, Burnett and Dave Gossett and Marsha Jenkins; and his eight siblings, Aryanna, Desmond, Alaylin, Aubrei, Dereon, Justin, Kingston, and Kamiyah.

Services for DeAngelo “DJ” Jenkins will be held on Sunday, January 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Janowicz Family Funeral Home, 469 W. Wheatland Ave., Remus, Michigan 49340. A prayer will be offered by Pastor John Mellish.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the family. DJ, we will carry your love with us until we meet again.

Allene Joyce Stolt Long, 93

Allene Joyce Stolt Long, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 27, at age 93.

Allene was born November 5,1932, in Harbor Springs, Michigan, to Albert and Ethel Whitaker Stolt.  Throughout her life, she was known for her warmth and genuine care for others; her devotion to the students she taught during her 30 years as an elementary school teacher; her deep faith in God; her commitment to protecting the earth and serving her community.  Most of all, she was devoted to her family.  She loved her children and their children with all her heart.  Spending time with them and watching them grow was her greatest joy.  As the family grew to include great-grandchildren, that joy grew as well.

Allene attended Alma College, graduating with a degree in social work and teaching.  She met Phillip Long when they were both members of Alma’s A Cappella Choir.  They married in 1954, a union that endured until his death in 2008.

In 2010, Allene suffered a debilitating stroke.  She lost her ability to speak.  This was devastating to her, but she maintained the faith and determination with which she faced every challenge.  Allene hung on to as much independence as possible through the years since, setting an example of perseverance and grace in the face of adversity.  One special blessing for her family was that she never lost her ability to say “I love you”.

Allene will be remembered for many things.  She was a leader.  She was recognized for her community service by the city of Big Rapids, where she was a founding member of the county recycling center.  Allene served the United Church of Big Rapids in many leadership roles, championing social justice projects and mentoring and teaching young people.  She was a teacher by nature and by profession; she brought that nurturing spirit to all that she did.  She was an advocate.  For children, for the underprivileged, for a cleaner planet and a simpler lifestyle, for peace.  Allene joined marches and walks to raise awareness of social issues such as climate change and world hunger.  She spoke up for what she believed in.  She was a reader.  She was a homemaker. She participated in mission trips and church retreats from a young age.  Allene had a beautiful singing voice, a beautiful laugh, and a beautiful smile.  She was a writer of letters, staying in touch with friends near and far. She was the best Nana, an enthusiastic organizer of tea parties and board games and dress-up and creative projects of all kinds.  She was a caregiver, lovingly caring for Phil after he was disabled by health issues.  Allene loved jigsaw puzzles, popcorn, and ice cream.  She enjoyed sewing, baking, and picking cattails and Queen Anne’s Lace from the side of the road.  She loved her extended family of many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was interested in the world, in people, in nature, in ideas, in travel.  Allene worked hard and prayed often.  She wanted to do all she could, and she did.

Allene was preceded in death by her parents and her step-father, Lloyd Fisher; her loving husband, Phil; and her dear brother, Edwin Stolt.  She is survived by her beloved children: Chris Long and wife Tricia, Barry Long, Melissa Long and husband Marco Seabra, and Camilla Martin and life partner Matthew Riegler.  She is also survived by her precious grandchildren: Tara, Erin, Alicia, Ginny, Nancy, Phillip, Whitaker, Margaret Allene, Arielle, and Anson; and twelve cherished great-grandchildren.  Two dear nieces, Sheila Haen and Felicia Norman; and sister-in-law Rosemary Stolt also survive.

Her family will miss her beyond measure.  We will be forever blessed by her love and diminished by her loss, but will carry on knowing that she lived every day to the fullest with love, joy and purpose. The family would like to thank the caregivers of Emmanuel Hospice and the Health Center at Porter Hills in Grand Rapids for their kindness and their care for Allene. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In Allene’s memory, you can sing your favorite hymn, recycle that water bottle, or read to a child.  Donations may be made in her name to the Little Traverse Conservancy or the United Church of Big Rapids.

Ignatius John Konrad Jr., 77

Ignatius (Iggy) John Konrad Jr., 77, passed away on Dec. 20, 2025.

“There once was a man from Lansing, M.I., who spent seventy-seven years giving things a hard try. With two kids and a wife, he loved the good life, cursing golf balls that dared not to fly.”

Hailing from Lansing, Michigan, he was a proud graduate of Michigan State University and a lifelong Spartan at heart, GO GREEN!!! That MSU pride showed up in his loyalty, his competitive streak, and his unwavering belief that he was usually right. He carried himself with confidence, a quick wit, and a sense of humor that made everyday moments more entertaining—sometimes whether people were ready or not.

He spent the bulk of his life in Big Rapids as a devoted husband to Cindy Konrad that he wed on May 23rd of 1970. Also a proud father of two, Karin Konrad and Ignatius Andrew (Zoe Chen) Konrad, and Grandfather of Victor and Rosie Konrad. Predeceased by parents Ignatius John Konrad Sr and Doris Konrad, and brother Mark Konrad. He didn’t always express affection in sentimental ways, but his love was unmistakable in his reliability, his presence, and his willingness to show up—often armed with advice, sarcasm, or both. Family gatherings were never dull when he was in the room.

A man of many hobbies, he was always engaged in something that caught his interest, though golf held a special place in his heart. On the course, he was passionate, determined, and famously vocal when the game failed to cooperate. Though short in stature, he made up for it with a larger-than-life personality, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, stories, and love that will be retold for years—likely with a few creative flourishes and the occasional well-placed curse.

In loo of (he always enjoyed a pun) flowers please make a donation to Project Starburst Food Pantry at 120 South State Street, Big Rapids, Michigan 49307, or The Nature Center at The Great Outdoors at 400 Nature Center Trail, Titusville, Florida, 32780.
