Sally Wilson, 96

Sally Wilson, age 96, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026, at her home in Blanchard, Michigan, with her children by her side.

Sally Wiedemann Tovar was born on November 20, 1929, in Mexico City, Mexico, the daughter of Alfredo Wiedemann Sanchez and Elena Tovar Gonzalez. She spent her early years in Sultepec before returning to Mexico City as a teenager.

While working as a nurse in Mexico, Sally earned a scholarship to study at Boston College in the United States. She and a friend were first sent to Washington, D.C., for three months to learn English. It was there that she met her future husband James L Wilson. The couple was united in marriage on August 12, 1957.

Determined and resilient, in her 50s she returned to college in the United States to earn her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification, since her nursing license wasn’t recognized in the United States. She dedicated many years to caring for others until her retirement following the closure of Edmore Hospital.

Sally found joy in life’s simple and creative pleasures. She loved knitting and sewing, often making beautiful sweaters and dresses for her daughters and granddaughters. She also enjoyed quilting, cross-stitching, trying new foods, games, puzzles, walks outdoors, camping, cooking, studying languages, watching movies, and attending the movie theater. A glass of wine with supper and a bit of cheese brought her daily happiness. Her favorite saying, “This too shall pass,” reflected her strength and perspective throughout life. And her healing song, “Sana, sana, colita de rana, si no sanas hoy, sanarás mañana,” brought a little bit of her magic and wonder to her injured children and grandchildren.

Sally loved to travel. After her marriage, she and her family lived in France for three years while her husband was stationed there. After returning to the United States, Sally regularly traveled to Mexico to visit loved ones. In her late 80s, she even visited her grandson in China.

Sally passed on her talents, traditions, and love to her children and grandchildren. She is lovingly survived by her children: Daniel (Dawn) Wilson, Lincoln Wilson, Paul Wilson, Rebecca “Becky” (Chris) Bowers, and Anna (Duane) Bean; her brother Salvador “Chava” (Rebeca) Wiedemann; her sister Miriam (Manuel) Solis; her grandchildren: Danna (Joel) Bauer, James Wilson, Shaine Wilson, Andrea Bowers, Sasha Bowers, Olivia Bowers, Bronson Bowers, Duane “Dee” Bean III, Anthony Bean, Truman Bean, and Anique Bean; and her great-grandchildren: Olive, Ivy, Maci, Marshall, and Annaleigha.

Renee Mayhew, 43

Renee Mayhew, age 43, of Muskegon, Michigan, passed away April 6th, 2026, surrounded by her family and friends. She was born on October 21, 1982, in Reed City to the parents of Thomas Garvon and Janet Adams.

Renee is survived by both her parents; her two sons, De’Antae and Donovan; sister Kathy; her nieces; and a nephew. Renee was predeceased by Jane Ford, her grandmother.

Our hearts are heavy as we announce the passing of our beloved family member, Renee, who brought so much light and strength to everyone she met. Renee had a quirky love of pigs started at a young age. She always wanted to have a pet pig, but ha to settle for knick-knacks, stuffed animals, and so much more. Renee devoted her life to her two sons De’Antae and Donovan. She was a single mother most of her children's lives but made sure they had everything they could ever need or want. Even after Renee's health declined, she would put her boys ahead of everything else to make sure they had great adventures and memories.

Renee volunteered in the community to raise awareness for our family’s kidney disease. She brought help to others by doing charity races and helping sign up volunteers to be organ donors. Renee has shown all her family, friends, and acquaintances the absolute strength of will she had in the last decade dealing with her everyday life and struggles with health. She never let it bring her down and instead focused on pushing through the hard times in their lives. Renee will be missed by all.

A celebration of Renee’s life will be held May 16th, 2026, at 1pm, at Chase Township Hall. Lunch will be provided. Care and arrangements are entrusted to Mohnke Janowicz Funeral Home in Big Rapids.

Deb Lehnert, 71

Surrounded by her husband and children, a shining light was extinguished May 7, 2026 when Deb Lehnert last closed her eyes. She was 71. Deb battled various ailments throughout her life but she was determined to live it on her terms and not have it dictated to her.

Born Debra Jae Carlson on November 12, 1954 in Lakeview, Michigan, she was the first of seven siblings of Bruce and Jedra (Noud) Carlson. She attended Lakeview Community Schools, graduating in 1972.

While working at an area business, she met Justin Lehnert. Justin was immediately taken by her and the loving couple was married on February 2, 1974. Being in Michigan, while there was snow and intense cold that day, their tremendous love for each other radiated all the warmth they could need.

Deb worked in the Chippewa Hills High School office for most of her adult life. Being in the educational system, she imparted the importance of learning to her two children, daughter Stephanie and son Josh. She also demonstrated unwavering support and encouragement, always ready with a listening ear or ready to travel to help with her children or grandchildren. Her love of her grandchildren (Ava, Lillian, Lauren, and Henry) had Deb criss-crossing the US, staging Camp Grandmas to her grandchildren’s delight. There may not have been a grandmother in history as proud of their grandkids as Deb.

The undisputed champion of the Clean Plate Award 50+ years running, Deb greatly enjoyed malts and root beer floats, music, including singing and playing the piano for her church, baseball (chiefly the Detroit Tigers or any team her grandson was on), and playing games, especially card games. While generally knowing the rules, she would still frequently be surprised upon her just happening to have the right card to play that would have her stumbling to win the game, with everyone laughing along the way.

She is survived by her husband Justin; daughter Stephanie (Lehnert) Woodhams; son Josh and daughter-in-law Liz; grandchildren, Ava and Lillian Woodhams, and Lauren and Henry Lehnert; six siblings, in-laws, and additional relatives (either through blood or by marriage) extending to seemingly half of the surrounding area’s population.

Ruth Lorraine Hess, born on May 27, 1945, was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, wife, public servant, and friend. She lived a life rooted in public service. She was affectionately known as “Ruthie,” a name she truly enjoyed being called.

Ruth was the beloved daughter of Ronald and Charlotte Tronsen. She is survived by her siblings Patricia and Donald Bauman, Bob Tronsen, and Barb Tronsen. Ruth held dear many friendships, especially one that stood the test of time and distance—her treasured friendship with Ann Phillips, which began in kindergarten.

Ruth dedicated much of her life to public service. She served as Mecosta Township Clerk, Mecosta County Clerk, and County Commissioner. She took great pride in her over 30 years of public service. In 2002, she was honored to serve as President of the Michigan Association of County Clerks. She also contributed her time as secretary for the Michigan Horse Pullers Association. Ruth believed deeply in civic duty and often encouraged others to vote and participate in jury service, often expressing what an honor it was to serve. She was a proud Republican and a deeply patriotic woman. She enjoyed shopping for clothing that showed her patriotic side.

Ruth had many talents and passions. Ruth was a gifted musician who found joy in sharing her talents. She was a beautiful singer and played the piano, organ, and accordion. She took great pride in purchasing her new home and her red Cadillac, a symbol of her independence. She also had an appreciation for covered bridges, University of Michigan Football and Basketball, and of course her Detroit Tigers.

Our mom was exactly what you hoped a mother and grandmother would be. She stressed education, work ethic, God, country and family.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Reed City Fields for the compassionate care she was given. She is now at peace and free from the physical challenges she faced in recent years.
