Michael and Nancy were united in marriage on December 11, 1956, and celebrated 67 years together. They had four children: Cheryl Lynn, Elizabeth (Tony) Ridenour, Brian (Sherry) Laughhunn, and Rebecca (Darnell) Small.

They were preceded in death by their daughter Cheryl, their parents, and Nancy’s brothers Bruce and Robert. Michael was also preceded by his sisters Phyllis, Lucy, and Patricia, and his brothers Darwin and Edward, along with many other cherished friends and relatives.

Michael and Nancy loved life and had many cherished friends. Both came from humble beginnings, but by industrious effort and patience they were able to enjoy many things with each other and their family and friends. They cherished memories made with ones they loved.

In 1973, just days after the birth of their youngest daughter, Michael and Nancy relocated from Rochester, Michigan, to their “vacation” farm in White Cloud. Michael often said that retirement was meant for young people, and work was for when you were too old for fun. From 1973 to 1978, they enjoyed hobby farming and spending their days together as a family.

The two of them proved to never be too old for fun! The couple remained active and vibrant throughout their lives. They credited their deep faith and hope in the promise of everlasting life as the key to their youthful hearts and minds.

Michael and Nancy will be deeply missed by all who knew them. They are at peace, and their memory will live on until the day Jehovah awakens them to reunite with those they loved and who loved them.

Larry D. Barden, 78, of Evart

Larry D. Barden, age 78, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 9, 2025. We are certain he is now walking in heaven with his beloved Jude.

Larry, the oldest of six children, was born on December 8, 1946, in Plymouth, IN, to Robert Dean and Viola Mae (Hostetler) Barden. He was a 1964 graduate of Tyner High School in Indiana. Larry became “ONE-LEGGED LAR” Thanksgiving Day in 1967, stepping on a Bouncing Betty landmine, as a drafted soldier in the 9th Infantry Division, 2nd Battalion, 47th Infantry, Company B who trained out of Fort Riley, Kansas. After some healing of the heart, mind and soul in Japan and being transferred to the famous Walter Reed Hospital of Washington D.C., he landed back home in Walkerton, IN where he decided to use the GI Bill and attend Purdue University North Central Westville Campus to study mechanical and electrical engineering and met his soul-mate, Judith Ella Reed. On their second date, she had a secret to tell him…she loved him! While in shock and awe, he had to admit that he loved his “blue-eyed, John Reed miniature-nosed, twiggy-bod, Jude”. They wed on April 8, 1972.

After graduating, Larry worked for Calumet Engineering in Gary, IN as a consultant for the US Steel Industry. Two years later, they started their family and eventually moved to Michigan, where Larry worked for CWC Castings Textron in Muskegon. In 1982, he took a job with American Motor Company-Evart Products Textron (now Ventra) where he finished his career.

Larry loved Jesus, adored his Jude, loved his country and his children/grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. Although “disabled”, Larry never let his loss of limb stop him from living life to the fullest. He conquered climbing ladders and would catapult leaps and bounds on his crutches. He loved to hunt, fish and find morel mushrooms in the springtime. He enjoyed traveling, vacationing all over the US with his family and going to his Infantry reunions at Fort Benning in Columbus, GA. Larry volunteered much of his time serving his community: at Lake Miramichi, with the Evart United Methodist Church Men's Club, LDFA, serving on the Evart Board of Education and was quite involved with the local VFW Post 7979. He was the type of man who would find the good in everyone and had such a giving heart.

It was then Paul realized he had too much charm and charisma to be working on a construction site and went into business for himself. Because cars were his passion, in 1980, Paul opened a used car lot and service center in Flint, Michigan, which he operated until 1984. In 1985, he moved back home to Evart, once again partnering with his brother, Francisco to open the Evart Car Care Center and eventually settled into a solo venture, owning the Sunoco Gas Station and Service Center on 80th Avenue and M115, from 1990 to 1997.

According to Paul’s children, Thomas and Jessica, Paul was a great dad, but was truly made to be a grandpa. Being called “Papa” was one of his biggest joys. He loved his family and enjoyed anything that brought them together, including trout camp, playing cards, making pizza at the family restaurant, watching westerns, and playing chess with the grand-kids, all of whom he cherished dearly. He was also a wonderful uncle to his nieces and nephews. He taught them how to play cards and never let them win. Each of them treasured their time with “Uncle Paul”.

Anyone who spent time around Paul knew that simply being in his presence could brighten your day, he was genuinely happy, always wearing a smile. Even in tough times, he found a way to stay positive. Paul was a collector of many things including cars, he never had enough cars and was continually shopping for more. He appreciated functionality and was always keen to use the correct terminology for things. He could be stubborn at times, but he loved his family and his country. Paul was a true patriot and supporter of our country, attending Trump rallies with his son and nephews.

Paul will be deeply missed by those who survive him: son, Thomas (Erica) Cataldo of Coleman; daughter, Jessica (Justin) Cornell of Evart; six beloved grandchildren, Lucas Cataldo, Dalylah and Timothy Pylman, Rosalie, Remington and Madeline Cornell; two sisters, Concetta Thompson of Florida, and Carmela Cataldo of Evart; sister-in-law, Angela Cataldo of Evart; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends near and far.

Preceding him in death were: four brothers, Tony Gallagher, Marvin Cataldo, Peter Cataldo, and Francisco Cataldo, and his parents, Michael and Thelma Cataldo.

Funeral services will take place 11AM, Wednesday, January 22nd at Corey Funeral Home, Evart, MI with visitation one hour prior. A luncheon will follow at the Evart Moose, where he was a member the last four years. Help commemorate a life well lived by joining family and friends, at Corey’s, for visitation Tuesday, January 21st, from 6PM to 8PM. James E. Dyer, 79, of Evart

James E. Dyer, age 79, of Evart, left this world and is now able to stroll around heaven. He passed into glory on Sunday, December 29, 2024 at Autumnwood of McBain where he has resided the last year. Jim was born in Flint on February 21, 1945 and raised in Lake City by William and Pearl (Vuillemot) Moss. In 1965, Jim entered into the United States Army where he spent 13 months serving in Korea, before his honorable discharge in 1967, as a Sergeant E5. He moved back home to Lake City and then to Marion for a while before moving to Evart in the mid 80’s.

He was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church, in Evart, until his health declined and he wasn't able to attend. Jim's church family didn't hesitate to stop in for visits which he was very appreciative of. His relationship with the Lord put a smile on his face, gave him the drive to do whatever he truly put his mind to, and courage to pass out literature regarding the message of salvation and God’s love. Jim loved to walk, so sharing God’s word was the perfect fit. He was an avid reader, known to be a character and often had a comment for anything.

Even though his neuropathy frustrated him he didn't let that stop him from doing what he wanted. Left to remember his determined spirit, God and family are those he was closest to and their families: brother, Earl (Nicke) Dyer of Lake City; half-sister, Diane (Robert “Bob”) Hicks of Evart and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Rolland Edward Brand, 90, of Stanton

Rolland Edward Brand of Stanton passed away at home in the presence of family on Saturday, December 28, 2024. Rolland was born on the family farm in Mecosta County Michigan near the settlement of Titus on August 26, 1934, the son of Clarence and Gladys (Dent) Brand. At a young age, he began working the fields with a team of horses. Rolland and his older brother Jim helped their father haul the logs that would frame the large barn that still stands on the property.

Rolland began his education in the one-room Titus School and later attended schools in Weidman and Barryton.
Rolland was only 14 when his mother died unexpectedly, and more hardship followed 2 years later when serious illness prevented his father from working. Rolland left school at the age of 16 and operated the family farm for the next 2 years. His efforts helped to save the farm and keep the family together. He then went to work at Buick Motor Company in Flint and was working there when they ran the first Buick “nailhead” V-8 engine off the assembly line in 1953.

In 1957 Rolland was briefly married to Virginia Ehl of Remus, Michigan. She was tragically killed shortly after Rolland reported for service to the United States Army. Following basic training in Ft. He continued to serve the community as a school bus mechanic for Central Montcalm Public Schools before becoming an appliance repair technician at Millard’s Furniture & Appliance – a position he held for nearly 30 years before retiring.

Rolland loved the outdoors and hunting. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting rabbits with his loyal beagle “Tiger”. He grew to love turkey hunting with his nephews, and he hunted deer until the age of 90. When not hunting, Rolland could be found creating projects in his woodworking shop or relaxing on his front porch – often in the company of his children and grandchildren.
