Cindy was an avid reader, often disappearing for hours on end in a good book from her ever-growing library, mostly enjoying science fiction, occasionally dipping into other genres and avoiding any and all romance novels with great disdain. She had an associates degree in communication, minoring in speech communication, had experience as an EMT, and had traveled most of the intercontinental United States, She had an eye for what some would call antiques, in her eye it was a thing of quality and craftsmanship unrivaled in this day and age.

She could often be found behind the lens of a camera, on one occasion I remember her father had asked her how she was able to get such detail and focus on a cat's whiskers and remarked that it was an incredible photograph.Quite the compliment from a man who had 2 agents and sold pictures some of us have seen in textbooks.

She also volunteered at the local animal shelter. She had made an impression on those who worked with her, and those who she helped along the way. Alice Fay Letellier, 77

Born October 23, 1948 in Kadoka, SD, the fifth of six children, Alice Fay Letellier’s parents were Lloyd and Esther Letellier. Lloyd ranched and Esther was a teacher and housewife. Alice attended the elementary school in Norris, but later attended and graduated from Sunshine Bible Academy in Miller, SD. Eventually she earned a Bachelor of Science degree and became a Registered Nurse (RN).

Having accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior, Alice sought to do God’s will. She served Jesus at various SD summer camps and went to Mexico and Canada in an outreach to serve the Savior. While visiting her two brothers at Dallas Theological Seminary, she met Tom and Mary Gordon who eventually moved to Stephenson, Michigan. While visiting the Gordon’s she met and became friends with Gary White. God used Florence Eckstrom to enlist her in mission work on Cat Island, Bahamas. In her second year, Gary visited Alice and later proposed. They were married in Stephenson, MI 09/30/1978, and together returned to Cat Island for 9 additional years where Alice was involved in teaching Bible in the schools, served Jesus at Old Bight Gospel Chapel, and helped with Gary’s camp ministry reaching-out to girls, children, youth and adults.

In 1987, Alice, Gary and Brian moved to Marquette, MI where Daniel was born and Alice worked as a RN in a care facility. They moved to Elizabeth Town, PA and Lansing, MI before moving to Evart, MI, in 1992, where she was a housewife, and homeschooled Brian and Daniel. Some years later Alice went to work at Reed City Hospital/Spectrum Health. After leaving Spectrum, Alice and Gary became foster parents to 19 boys and youth, some of them more than once. The purpose was to give them the opportunity for a better life, while planting seeds of faith.

Over the course of 23 years, Alice made birthday cakes and cooked good meals for the many youth Gary brought home from Pineview Homes. At Calvary Baptist, Alice was instrumental in: forming and teaching Ladies Bible Studies, teaching Sunday School, led the Awana Program for 30 years, taught Junior Church, was a deaconess, used her nursing skills to help others, entertained visiting missionaries and groups, and was a friend to all.

Over the years Alzheimer’s slowly consumed Alice, but her love for others, her sense of humor, her passion for walking, and her enjoyment of God’s creation did not lessen. Alice and Gary were in their 48th year of marriage, and she was in her 78th year of life when Jesus called Alice into glory on 11/09/2025 under the care of Hospice of Michigan. Prayers were answered when Jesus took her home with her family at her side.

Delbert Elwood Finup, 82

Delbert (Del) Elwood Finup died peacefully at home in Lakeview Michigan on November 7, 2025, at the age of 82. Del is remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great-great grandfather, and friend, as well as being an exceptional pilot, horseman, and all-around outstanding person.

Del was raised in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, the son of Arthur and Laura (Marks) Finup, and brother to Elwood and Emory. It was during this time that Del gained a passion for flying and horses. Del was an exceptional athlete in high school and held school records for many years. He entered the Army in 1961, serving the bulk of his duty stationed in Alaska. He recalled to his family, “I don’t know at what temperature freezes, but I saw it get mighty slushy.” After his release from the service, he moved to Reno Nevada to pursue his first passion, flying. He obtained his pilot’s license and higher certifications. He was determined to become an agricultural aviator (crop duster) as this required the highest level of pilot skill performed with minimal margin of safety, which fueled Del’s desire to be the best at whatever he set his mind to, but also to provide a much needed service to America’s farmers. As stated in his letter of reference from the Agricultural Aviation Academy, Del was “a highly skilled and qualified pilot. He completed his training in record time and at all times was in the top 10%. He consistently demonstrated a high degree of professionalism in his profession and is highly respected by all. He possesses the desired qualities of a flight instructor, a gentleman of high standards, and I consider it an honor to highly recommend him to any position he may apply.”

While in Reno, Del met and married June Margret Litteral and became father to her four sons Mark, Jim, Tim, and Steve. They moved to Michigan and Del began pursuing his career as an Agricultural Aviator. He eventually started his own business, Finup Spraying Service, in Lakeview Michigan. He also started pursuing a second passion, raising and racing quarter horses, involving his sons in both his aviation and horse passions and setting an example for working hard to reach your dreams.

Following the much too early loss of June in 1975, Del purchased 40 acres south of Lakeview and built a horse ranch and seriously started pursuing raising and racing quality quarter horses in earnest with significant success. During the summer growing season, he worked long hours rising before sunup to spray crops until sundown to get the most out of the daylight hours, followed by hours at night doing necessary maintenance. During the rest of the year he worked with his horses, driving to breed and train competitive racing quarter horses.

Del met Hazel (Bush) Kozinski and they were married in 1978 and the family expanded as he became father to her children Michael and Ellie. Del was as passionate about raising his children as building his businesses and gave everything he could to help them succeed. He enjoyed watching his family expand as his kids starting having kids, grand kids, great grandkids, etc. In his passions he attained high levels of accomplishment in both flying and horse racing. He served as president of the Michigan Agricultural Aviation Association and bred and trained horses which won several high stakes races.

In 2001 Del suffered a stroke which ended his careers and confined him to limited movement and living through persistent pain. Even with this significant challenge he forever maintained his mirthful sense of humor and loved to tell stories about his flying experiences, horses, and family. He retained his keen mind for numbers and demonstrated this by calling relatives, friends, and former colleagues throughout his day, dialing their phone numbers from memory, staying up on recent events in everyone’s lives. Del drove through his challenges for nearly 25 years before succumbing to a hard-fought battle with heart disease stemming from his stroke in 2001. Del spent his final days connecting with his loved ones, in person or by phone, telling them he was proud of them and loved them and, in typical Del-fashion, making everyone else comfortable with his passing.

“He was a man, take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again.”

-Shakespear’s Hamlet describing the death of the late king, Hamlet’s father.

Del will be remembered on Tuesday, November 18th, at 3:00 pm at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lakeview with Pastor Alex Sable officiating, followed by apple pie (Del’s favorite food) and coffee in the fellowship hall. Interment will be in Cato Township Cemetery.

Robert James Hekhuis, 90

Robert James Hekhuis, age 90 of Hersey, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 30, 2025, in Reed City.

He was born on January 29, 1935, - the youngest and last remaining of James and Susie Hekhuis’s five children.

Robert (Bob) was a man of common sense and uncommon decency.

Raised on a small family farm – Maple Hill Farm – outside Fremont, Michigan, he grew up in a small house without plumbing and attended a one-room schoolhouse through the 8th grade.  Hard work was a fact of life on Maple Hill as there were chickens to raise, hogs to feed, cows to milk, and fruits and vegetables to can. While the work was hard, his days were not without joy. His mother’s pies were matters of county-wide fame and he and his closest siblings in age - Jerry and Connie - fished and skated on nearby Dutch Lake and performed many practical jokes on family. Their escapades became family legend and were a source of laughter at gatherings for the rest of their lives.

It was his mother Susie’s deep faith that anchored the family. Her quiet, faithful example led all five Hekhuis children to serve others and God.

After serving in the U.S. Army, Robert began college at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, but transferred to Wayne State University after a factory accident crushed his leg and left him unable to walk for two years.  It was in Detroit that he graduated college, began law school and met the love of his life, Sandra (Foster) Hekhuis. He began dating Sandra while in law school (he wanted to be a labor-side labor attorney), but their shared vision of service led him to leave law school and enroll in Western Theological Seminary in Holland, MI, where he became a minister in the Reformed Church in America. It was a decision that neither of them regretted.

Bob loved to quote Abraham Lincoln’s line that “God must have loved common people. He made so many of them.” A minister whose best sermons were delivered with love and care but without words, he met people where they were without judgment and with empathy and grace.

As one who had known hunger, he was quick with a meal or groceries for the families that showed up at his door.

As one who was wheelchair bound for two years, he understood the pain and isolation that came from illness and regularly visited the sick and shut-ins.

As one who had experienced the dark night of the soul, he recognized crises of faith and hope knowing that the hardest struggles are often internal.

And as one who experienced the love of family and of his Lord Jesus Christ, he shared that love with everyone he met.

Robert loved being outdoors. He claimed that he wrote his best sermons while he engaged in his favorite pastimes: ice fishing and gardening.

Robert and Sandra retired to a cabin on the Muskegon River which he had built over many decades. Outside of his family and ministry, building the cabin was the project of his life, keeping him occupied with endless projects, some of which were never completed, but which he undertook with creativity, zeal, and the eye of an architect.  This four decade undertaking was aided by his brothers; his brother-in-law, Roy; and numerous friends including Ron Berens, Rink Duiker Sr., and Tom Hommerding – the latter of whom he considered a member of his extended family.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents (James and Susie) and by his siblings and their spouses, the latter of which he loved as if they were his own siblings: Ben and Agnes  (Nieboer) Hekhuis; Nellie and Adam Hunter; Gerald and Thelma (Jordan) Hekhuis; and Connie and Roy Crater.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Sandra Hekhuis; his sons, Jeremy and Darren; their wives, Christine and Karla; and his grandchildren, Hannah, Isaiah, August, Adelaide, and Caleb.

In lieu of flowers, Dad would rather you plant a garden, talk to a stranger, or enjoy ice cream with someone you love.

Donations may be made to the Comfort Home MI (https://thecomforthomemi.org) which provided love and care to Bob (and his family) in his last days or World Vision (https://www.worldvision.org/our-work).

A memorial service will be held at a later date.  Details will be provided.

He especially loved taking his brothers out fishing and making memories together.

Logan was a proud dad to his daughter, Payton, and was devoted to his family and his girlfriend, Gracie Schuberg. He loved his trucks, goofing around, and making people laugh. With his curly blonde hair, bright blue eyes, and bold personality, Logan could light up any room he walked into. He lived life to the fullest and embodied his favorite saying: “Go big or go home.”

He is survived by his parents, David and Angela; his brothers, David, Preston, and Colton Groot; his sister, Kailey Groot; his beloved daughter, Payton; and his girlfriend, Gracie Schuberg. Also surviving are his grandparents, Teresa Groot, Theresa Jackson, Eddie Burden, and Dusty Spence; his aunts, Jessica, Katrina, Jaclyn, Jamie, Nena, Marie, and Stephanie Fitzgerald; his uncles, Rob (Danielle) Groot, Mike (Jamie) Groot, and Dallas; nephews, Jaxson and Weston Groot; cousins, Brody, Elizabeth, Emma, Michael, Gavin, Madelyn, Gage, Andrew, Josh, Gabe, Ally, and Kristin; special close friends—Little T, Caiden, Mark, Mikey, Tony, Jacob, Kenny, and many, many more friends.

Logan was preceded in death by his grandfather Bob Groot.

Logan will be remembered for his adventurous soul, his kindness, and the way he made every moment count. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m., Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at The Woods Free Methodist Church in Stanwood. Logan’s family will greet friends beginning at 10 a.m., on Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the family to help with final expenses. Care and arrangements are entrusted to the Mohnke Janowicz Funeral Home in Big Rapids.

Gerard James O' Connor, 85

Gerard James O' Connor passed away surrounded by family on October 21, 2025 in Stanwood, Michigan. He was born on August 8, 1940 to James and Catherine O’ Connor in Teaneck, New Jersey.

Jerry lived an incredibly rich and interesting life. He spent his early childhood in Whitestone, NY, playing stickball and serving as an altar boy. The family later moved to Tenafly, NJ, where Jerry, as an early teen, attended seminary school in Hamilton, Massachusetts, and completed high school at St. Cecilia’s in Englewood, NJ. He continued his education at Fairfield University (CT), studying Marketing and Business. His love of learning, devotion to family, and commitment to community inspired many seminal milestones in his adult life.

After college, Jerry collected and road-raced his many MGs while working in sales in NYC. When drafted for Vietnam, he qualified for and trained as an officer. He was commissioned to serve in Counterintelligence, receiving the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service in Vietnam in 1966. Not long after his return to the States, he met his future wife, Lin, at Orbit Al’s (Tenafly, NJ), where she handily beat him in a game of pool. He was hooked, and asked for her hand in marriage three months later.

Jerry possessed an energy that filled a room when he walked in. Once you met him, he was hard to forget. He made people feel as if they were the most important person in the room, and they often left as friends. He took time to listen and held intelligent conversations on a wide variety of topics. If Jerry gave you a nickname, it meant you had touched his heart. He bestowed nicknames upon family, friends, neighbors, and especially nieces and nephews.

As a husband and father, he shared his passion for travel, taking the family on adventures near and far. He loved Broadway musicals, cheered for his Yankees, fondly known as “the good guys”, and was devoted to Notre Dame football. He hosted countless parties for friends and family, always the instigator of the water fight, and famously declared each gathering “a financial failure and a social success” to mark a good time. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and eagerly attended their recitals, games, meets, plays, and graduations, always proud to show his love and support.

Jerry loved to play golf and enjoyed a Guinness after each round. He was in constant search of the perfect swing, but the lack of practice—or the frustration of never finding his tee shots, often interrupted his lifelong quest to become a professional golfer.

His career afforded him the opportunity to travel the world and sell technology. Starting with IBM mainframes in the 1970s, he progressively sold various forms of communication technology, including CAT 5 lines and ultimately satellites and satellite systems - even flying on the Concorde to complete business transactions.

Jerry spent his life immersed in service to his community. From pioneering Hillsdale (NJ) Hawks football and founding Hillsdale Girls’ Softball, serving as a commissioner for Stonybrook Swim Club, advocating for the Bergen Catholic Touchdown & Tee-Off Clubs, serving as Drum Major of the Tri-County Pipe and Drum, creating Wallenpaupack Vets for Vets in Pennsylvania (which advocated for veterans’ care), and as a member of the Mecosta County Optimist Club - his calling was always to give and to help others.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, James and Catherine O’Connor. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda (Linny), of 58 years. No matter the challenges, he would proclaim his love for her to anyone who would listen. He is also survived by his three children: Kate O’Connor of Stanwood, MI (Brian Czarnecki); Kimberly O’Connor of West Long Branch, NJ; and Rob (B.J.) O’Connor (Heather Andreana) of Orland Park, IL. His greatest loves were his four grandchildren, Nicholas, Meghan, Mackenzie, and Finley, who all adoringly referred to him as “Bepa.”

He is also survived by four brothers: James (Sippewissett, MA), Kevin (Ridgefield, CT), Brian (Campbell Hall, NY), and Thomas (Evansville, IN); his sister, Cathleen (Easton, PA); and many beloved nieces and nephews. He leaves behind many grand doggies and kittens to continue his legacy as an animal lover—despite always professing that he never wanted a “fur baby”! He also leaves behind his best pal in the world, his dog Turlough, though his previous buddy, Cormac the Irish Terrier, would be remiss if he weren’t mentioned by name as well.

Arrangements are in the care of Daggett Gilbert Funeral Homes, Big Rapids. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Mecosta County Optimist Club are greatly appreciated. The viewing will be held at the funeral home on Monday, October 27, from 4–7 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Remus, MI, at 11 a.m., with a viewing at 10 a.m., on Tuesday, October 28. Jerry will be laid to rest at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI, on Wednesday, October 29, at 1:30 p.m.
